You need like 8 good midfielders running through there. They are reliant on Curnow but they also have McKay. Really could be either

You do but I doubt their need to mids outweights their need for the best prospect in the draft.

Exactly. The one that isn't 2m tall has developed at a rapid pace. The one that's shorter but can actually take a strong grab and has better instincts as a forward is a much better choice than the tall athlete.
If the AFL stupidly decide to change the rules and bring in zones.
These guys may come back into play, with the likelyhood of defensive structures to go back to more 1 v 1 game style.

There are rumours that some recruiters don't think Lukocious is the undisputed number 1 best prospect.

Yes but what else do we have to go off.

If he's not the standout number 1 I won't have any issue with missing out on him even if he's available at pick 2.

I'd love either Walsh or Smith, but my gut says they're both gone before pick 4. And that means if we finish 16th or better we're no chance of drafting one of the two best mids in the draft. The squiggle ladder predictor on the draft & trade page has had us finishing 16th for more than a month now, and I'm 100% convinced that Lynch is gone from the GC and that the Suns will get band 1 compensation.

I'm hopping RCD puts together a fantastic back half of the season and solidifies himself as the next best midfielder.

I'm still a massive fan of what Rankine can do, but am more than a little concerned that he presents as a genuine flight risk.

If we finish in 16th and our first draft pick does get pushed back to pick 4, I'm willing to explore trade options for a lower top 10 pick and another first round pick. Obviously I'm looking at Adelaide's current two first rounders, which sit at pick 8 and pick 13, that's if they are unable to trade themselves up to pick 1. We'd have to send something back as well, such as our current third round pick (which I don't believe they'd take), or realistically our 2019 second round pick.

Mock draft time using the Ladder Predictor with Band 1 Compensation Picks added in.

1 Carlton - Jack Lukosius

2 Gold Coast - Sam Walsh

3 Gold Coast - Bailey Smith
(Compensation pick for losing Tom Lynch)

4 Brisbane - Izak Rankine

5 St Kilda - Max King

6 Sydney Swans - Nick Blakey
(Matching Bulldogs Bid, lose pick 19)

7 Western Bulldogs - Riley Collier-Dawkins

8. North Melbourne - Tarryn Thomas
(Matching Fremantles Bid, lose pick 13)

9. Fremantle - Ian Hill

10. Essendon - Jackson Hately

11. Adelaide - Connor Rozee

12. Adelaide - Ben King
(Compensation pick for losing Rory Sloane)

13. Greater Western Sydney - Ned McHenry

14. Hawthorn - Curtis Taylor

15. Geelong - Bailey Williams

16. Adelaide - Xavier Duursma

17. Gold Coast - Riley Bowman
(From West Coast 2017 trade)

18. Port Adelaide - Luke Valente

19. Collingwood - Chayce Jones

20. Richmond - Jye Caldwell

I can't see Gold Coast going for one or both of the King twins, pretty much for the same reason that many Lions fans would go for either of the King twins. Not that they're not a need after losing Lynch, but more that we have question marks about them being that good at AFL level.

As you can see in my mock draft, Gold Coast could still get a KPP at their later first round pick with both Bailey Williams and Riley Bowman possibly in the mix.

Ben King was the hardest for me to project who might go for him.

Even with Adelaide's mid round picks sliding back due to Gold Coasts compensation pick, and Blakey and Thomas being bid on before their first pick, I'd still consider trading pick 4 (Rankine) for what ends up as picks 11 & 16. Looking at my mock draft, I'd be wanting to make it a straight swap, or at worst, including our 4th round pick back.

Nice briz, I think we'll end up in front of the Saints as well netting us pick 5 in your scenario. I'd stick with pick 5 and take Izak Rankine if still there, too much upside to pass IMO.

I also can't see the Crows getting band 1 compensation for Rory Sloane when we got band 2 for Rockliff who was a year younger and got a 4 year deal which I don't think Sloane would.

I wonder if the jungle drums of clubs lining up for Steven May next year has a bearing on what the Suns do with their draft hand this year. Firstly I think its an absolute monty they will get band 1 compensation if/when Lynch leaves (if he doesn't qualify then they might as well scrap it). The Steven may scenario could add weight to both of the King Twins at the coast?!?!? Wishful thinking perhaps......

Yeah, I wasn't sure about the Sloane compo. Who are the other out of contract players that could net first round or end of first round compensation picks?

I highly doubt that West Coast lose both of them....my gut feel is that one will go and the other handsomely compensated with a very good long term contract

Yeah gut feeling would be Gov leaves for money and Gaff gets a decent deal

What would you be willing to trade?
Trade next years first to GC for 1 of their picks (plus a sweetener) On the proviso they don’t take him.
That way we get pick 3 and 5.
Tell him he’s dreaming!

Great work Briztoon. Especially factoring in the potential compo's and matching bid's

Two questions:

1. What do do think of the chances Gold Coast or Adelaide forcing trades for Lynch and Sloane respectively? IMO maybe not the former but possibly the latter.

2. If and when it comes in, how will live trades work? That is, does the trade happen before a team picks or after a team makes a selection. For Example if Adelaide wanted Rankine, do they wait until a team select him and then offer a trade, or do they have to try and trade for a pick. Eg Lion's pick 4 anticipating Brisbane's selection? Using this scenario what would you want from Adelaide - or would you just keep Rankine?

Ok, that's about 4 questions.

My understanding of the live trading is that if we select Rankine with pick 4 - Adelaide or any other club for that matter will have the option of offering up a trade scenario to get their man. If there is more than 1 club that wants him the bidding war begins I would imagine.
