Two kids from Wagga in that U-15 team.

I'm pretty sure GWS still have full academy access to Wagga, although I stand to be corrected. If they're getting two more early picks in a couple of years I wonder if we'll get another round of whinging from the Victorian clubs for the line to pushed up north a bit further.

I worry a lot about the academies being eroded piece by piece, just like equalisation is being eroded.

How many academy kids teams are allowed to match bids on in the first round is now tied to ladder position.

Finish in the top 4 and you can only match a bid on one academy kid.

I don't envy the giants. They've lost so many decent footballers and look like theyll lose some more in the near future. Similar to us they need the northern academies to work for them. Especially long term

I'll admit to being very concerned about Ashcroft being in the GC Academy.

We've seen this year what happened with Blakey. Sounded like he was so entrenched by the time a decision came to be made that there was no question of joining us, and a pretty minimal chance of joining North, despite John playing there for 10 years and 200+ games.

Ashcroft's kid has seen his old man heavily involved with GC. Barracking for GC over us. He's then played for GC academy himself. A few relationships, and most of his teenage years spent supporting GC, and I'm not sure how much "my old man won a couple of trophies up the road" competes with "years of investment, my old man was instrumental in building the place, and I've been playing here for years".

Definitely different to Blakey, with his old man having been moved on, and with three premierships, but if I were running book, I'd have the Suns as favourites, particularly if Marcus left on good terms as reported.

Who knows how the draft is gonna work in a few years or if he's any good.

I've always found these father son news a bit strange. He's what 14 years old?

Yep, ultimately the bidding system makes you pay something close to what these kids are worth anyway, so its not usually a massive free kick we miss out on or anything.

Assuming suns finish 17, If lynch goes to richmond it wont be for the cash it will be more likely for success. Been reading he wont get the big dollars there so the GC could miss out on pick 3 as compo. Good for us in that case. Suns could match bids forcing trades so still unlikely pick 3 will end up with GC. Do Collingwood or Hawthorne have the salary cap space to pay lynch the big dollars needed to get suns pick 3, i dont know. Lots of wheeling n dealing yet to happen im sure but when all is done band 1 compo is no certainty.

Do you really think there's any chance the AFL won't give band 1 to the Suns? Even if the contract isn't worth band 1 they'll still get it and it still undervalues the quality of Lynch

The Sun's will 100% get band 1.

Even if Richmond isn't the big dollars, it'll still be a massive contract. Easily enough to get first round compo.

I really hope they Match and/or at least force a trade.
For the statement it makes and not lying down/bending over to the Vics.
Not so we don’t get pushed back a spot. Because they would get band 1.
He is the Captain of their football club and they shouldn’t let him just walk away without a fight.

I still think it's a huge anomaly that a team that gets a gun RFA/FA gives up nothing for them apart from dollars and a list spot.

IMO if for example the Tigers get Tom Lynch and it triggers band 1 compensation for the Suns the Tigers first pick in the draft should be rescinded.

Not sure about rescinded completely but certainly moved back. Maybe they get their first pick moved to join their second. That way they still get the pick but no where near the quality they otherwise would get.

Have never understood why this isn’t the case because really, every other club is penalised as a result except for the club acquiring the player.

Do you remember the outcry when Buddy went to Sydney? Everyone up in arms about the reigning premiers getting one of the biggest names in the game, the year (or maybe two I can't remember) after trading in Kurt Tippett too. I don't see the same outcry at the moment. Maybe we're all now used to free agency & with the recent increase in player payments there's no reason Richmond can't afford, Cotchin, Rance, Reiwoldt, Martin, Prestia, ... and Lynch.

Sydney isn't a big melbourne club and that was when everyone was whinging about COLA. Pretty disgraceful that they were effectively banned from trading in players during that period too.

I suspect if it was say Bont leaving to go to GWS there would be a lot more outcry, but no one cares about the suns and Richmond/Pies have massive fan bases and institutional media support.

You're kidding yourself. Frawley went for a far smaller deal and the AFL gave Melbourne band 1. It was likely because they were struggling so it was basically a fake priority pick. Gold Coast are even further in the gutter, and there is a 0% chance he leaves as an FA for anything less than a band 1. I wouldn't even rule out the AFL handing them a top priority pick on top of band 1 compensation.

Anyway, still hoping we get Rankine. Our squad is pretty well-rounded, so best available all the way.

No way Lynch leaves on a deal that isn't worth a round 1 pick, but check out Frawley's deal in the context of the salary cap and salaries at the time - it's not as out of place as it sounds. But I know I'm on a hiding to nothing bucking the media and BF narrative on this having tried to explain it before.

Think we are left with pick 5 now . Saints really needed to beat dogs last night cannot see them winning anymore . We will go above them after beating suns. Have to hope they take 1 of the king twins with their picks

He took the lesser money offer at Hawthorn for 4 years. It was a similar deal to Betts, but Carlton didn't have the Melbourne rubber banding handicap. Melbourne also got two first round picks for Scully which is even more laughable.

It could very easily be pick 6 if the AFL gives Gold Coast a priority pick on top of the Lynch compo. If they don't get one this year, that will be official confirmation the AFL doesn't hand out priority picks at the top of the draft anymore.

Right now it's looking like Walsh to Carlton, Lukosius & Smith/Rankine to Gold Coast. I think GC will definitely go for a mid+tall combo. St. Kilda should pick a mid too, whichever one GC doesn't pick.
