Have you heard anything re the top 4 or 5

No. He's overwhelmingly top 4. Those in the industry, particularly recruiters, saying they would opt for him over Smith is news though. I personally wouldn't.

A few things are evident in that midfields generally win games of AFL footy and we've got 3 exciting young prospects in McCluggage, Berry and Rayner. If we draft a tall (bar Lukosius) I personally would be very suprised. News on Smith lately has been very quiet due to school footy I would assume. Stocker is making a run late and eventhough Rankine isn't a pure midfielder his talent is evident for all to see. Walsh will be gone and I can't see us moving up to get him. Rozee is also another to look at and could be a Higgins type. There's talk of Witherden going into the midfield and I think he will but only on limited minutes. All in all we have to build our future midfield we've got some very good building blocks but we're not quite there yet.

Im very much on your wavelength JJ, but i do think we may try and trade up.

I think Rankine is seen as an elite modern game talent and that there will be another smith or walsh in next years draft and the one after that.
Yes, if we learn anything from the Rayner experience it is that with your first pick you go the best available talent regardless and deal as best you can with any go home issues and look to resolve lists deficiencies with later picks and trades.

Neither player suits the type of player the Suns desperately need. The Suns need their own Ollie Wines or Patrick Cripps.
They are hoping will Brodie is that inside beast certainly was his strength pre draft

Not about getting pick 2 about hopefully landing 1 of lukoscious, Walsh , smith or rAnkine. If we go above saints we likely to fall into the second tier of mids. Not sure we would go RCD when we can get another bid bodied mid in McFayden through academy . Can you imagine a forward line sign Hipwood, Cameron , Rayner and rankine in it .
Rankine is the one. I think we've recruited well over the last few years, but Rankine is that missing goalkicking, x-factor ingredient we've been waiting for since Akermanis left the club. Him and Charlie Cameron would give us the perfect balance of dynamism.

I think we win 1 more game and may end up with pick 4 or 5 but we then turn our attention to securing walsh and that will mean trading up to 2 or 3 with the gold coast more likely. Say we end up with pick 5, we trade pick 5 and a player to gold coast for pick 2 and a swap of picks in 2019 ( our 3rd for tgeir 2nd round pick) They will jump at still securing a gun talent at 5 and get a player for doing so. Which player that would be from the lions thats going to help the gold coast and not dent our playing stocks thats the question.
Walsh is 100% going at pick 1 or 2, which is either Carlton or Gold Coast. Every supporter of every club every year always talks up the idea of trading up in the draft, and it rarely ever comes to fruition. The only team you can really speculate doing that is Adelaide because there are some very highly rated SA players they're linked with, and have two first rounders and McGovern to work with.

One thing is for sure we cant let a player slip from our reach who would fit into our midfield beautifully, whose dreamed of playing for the lions and is the most talented midfielder in this draft per basically every expert under the sun.
Remember we were all saying that about Schache and how he was going to finish off his dad's work?
What about when Ainsworth outright said he wanted to play for Brisbane?

Who these kids support means nothing. They could be a diehard Lions supporter all their life and still get homesick. At the end of the day, we'll choose the best player available at our pick.

Because a few people I touch base with in the industry believe Rankine is the 2nd best player behind lukocious in the draft. Smith is highly rated dont get me wrong, but i think he is more seen as the 5-7th best talent in the draft.
Rankine may well be the best, just not the safest with the question of potential homesickness. Carlton will pick one of Lukosius or Walsh, then I can see the Gold Coast picking one of the safer midfield bets like a Walsh/Smith, mainly because GC have recruited multiple Rankine-type players in the past (Clayton loves that type) to varying degrees of success. I am also pretty certain they'll take at least one tall like a Lukosius or a King. If we have the next pick, that leaves us with Rankine.

I had another go at the ladder predictor this morning, I've got us finishing 15th thereby netting us pick 4 (before possible Lynch compo) even if we only win the game v the Suns on the run home. Beat the Magpies as well and I still have us finishing 15th.

You have St Kilda winning another game?

Runs home (that are relevant to us):

Bulldogs: North, Carlton, Richmond - I'd say that it's reasonable to expect them to beat either North or (more likely) Carlton, in which case we don't finish higher than them short of winning all three remaining games, which I think is unlikely.

Saints: Essendon, Hawthorn, North - None of those games are unwinnable, but at the same time, it's also not unlikely that they'll lose all three.

Lions: Collingwood, Gold Coast, West Coast - I think we're unlikely to topple West Coast, which gives us two good chances. Collingwood win the midfield, but our three-pronged forward line will trouble their injury-riddled backline. Gold Coast is being called an easy win on this board, which is exactly what was being said before the reverse fixture. We all saw how that worked out - let's not put the cart before the horse people. If GC beat us, then they finish above us unless we beat Pies or WC.

Gold Coast: Richmond, Lions, Geelong - They'll have the QClash circled in their calendar as their only possible winnable game remaining. We're improving, but we're still stuck on 4 wins, same as them.

Carlton: Freo, Bulldogs, Adelaide - Long shots to trouble us. Carlton's best chance of avoiding the spoon is that Freo are now eliminated from finals contention and drop the head. Bulldogs also out of finals contention and drop the head. By round 23, Adelaide are likely out of finals contention too. If they win 2 our of three, and GC lose all, they might overtake on percentage. If they win all three, and we don't win another, we'll pick up another spoon.

Just on Schache as it turned out he wasnt ready for AFL footy and from our perspective how were we to really know that. He wasnt ready mentally and wasnt ready physically. Big credit to the dogs they have been patiently building him up this year to the point where he now looks comfortable physically out there and has mentally got his head around what it takes. If we had hung on to him one more year things may have also turned for him and us but he could also be still in his shell.
Walsh is ready and like you say will go 1 or 2 in the draft. Hes a no brainer selection of we get the opportunity.
With regard to Ainsworth i think we would have chosen him if mccluggage was gone but when he was there at pick 3 and was seen more as a genuine mid how could you not take him.

Connor McFadyen will be our second pick, he'll get bid on before our get our second pick. Can't see him falling to our third pick.

If Noble and co have the same inkling they will be doing everything they can to facilitate a trade up the order, it would be ideal if we grab 2 midfielders before McFadyen.

It’s looking like there is a lot of genuine depth in the second round. I can easily see McFadyen being bid on later in the second round.

Who you liking with our 2nd rounder that is a possibility to be available on current rankings briz? Thomas Berry, Liam Stoker, Jye Caldwell, Xavier Duursma or other?

Really depends who is on board at that stage.

I don’t believe we’re anywhere near close to what the draft rankings will look like closer to the draft.

If Duursma was there, he’d be high on my list, ahead of Berry jr.

This could be a great opportunity for us to get involved in trading our first and second round picks for 2 first rounders.
Example:
Picks 3 & 21 (as they currently stand) for Adel's 2 first rounders (currently 7 & 15) plus CEY.
I'm hearing that CEY will ask to be traded to the Lions at season's end.

This might change to picks 4/5 & 22/23 for picks 7/8, 10-15 and CEY by season's end. Not sure how this works points wise, but this would certainly be something to look at.
