Political environment? Powers that simply wouldn't allow it? Have you not been following the circus known as the MRP this year? Tom Mitchell is going to win the Brownlow after deliberately trying to elbow someone in the head.

The AFL couldn't give two stuffs about what other clubs think. They weren't too happy with the abundance of concessions the Gold Coast and GWS received in 2010-2011, and it would be same shit, different time in 2018.

Pretty sure all the clubs signed of on those concessions before hand.

I think we win 1 more game and may end up with pick 4 or 5 but we then turn our attention to securing walsh and that will mean trading up to 2 or 3 with the gold coast more likely. Say we end up with pick 5, we trade pick 5 and a player to gold coast for pick 2 and a swap of picks in 2019 ( our 3rd for tgeir 2nd round pick) They will jump at still securing a gun talent at 5 and get a player for doing so. Which player that would be from the lions thats going to help the gold coast and not dent our playing stocks thats the question.

One thing is for sure we cant let a player slip from our reach who would fit into our midfield beautifully, whose dreamed of playing for the lions and is the most talented midfielder in this draft per basically every expert under the sun.

I’d trade our pick and Sam Mayes for their pick everyday.

Just remember that CEY was delisted and re rookied by the crows this year. He has zero value in a trade and would be more of a “Delisted Free Agent” pickup that could just be thrown into a trade for shits and giggles..

The pick swapping is the important part as CEY doesn’t garner any value whatsoever

Doesn't necessarily mean they fully endorsed them.

The AFL could give the Suns another top 5 pick, something they have discretion to do, and there's nothing the other clubs could do about it. The AFL can just say "they've just lost their captain and best player on top of being uncompetitive for 4 years. we feel it's appropriate to award a priority pick under these circumstances."

You might not like it, but it's very possible. Priority picks used to be a lot more common based on seasonal win/loss records, and right now, GC are in a far worse position than every single team that's ever received a high end priority pick.

We lost Justin Clarke to concussion on top of being uncompetitive and we didnt get one

We actually did get one 6 months before that, albeit end of first round.

Suffice to say, as bad as we've been over the last 5 years, we've still never been as bad as the Gold Coast now. They're also still a fairly new expansion team so that boosts their chances of better treatment.

Gonnna have to disagree with the "we have never been as bad as GC". Our defence was so bad that it is in the history books as like the 5th worst poinst against in the history of the game. It was so uncompetitive and l don't remember us having a massive injury list as GC does.

Gold Coast have won 4 more games than us over the last 5 years.

We have absolutely been as bad as them. They still have 4 wins in a terrible year. We have definitely been in the same boat in the last 5 years and we have both been bleeding good players which has only made matters worse. Whilst I dislike the suns, I feel like we both are getting shafted by the lack of empathy from the VFL circus.

We will only get Sam Walsh if a few things fall our way, or against us depending on how you view it-

1- We finish 17th and get pick 2, meaning we would have lost our remaining 3 games.
2- The Blues take Lukosius at pick 1.

Leaving us with Sam Walsh.

If we beat the Suns or the Suns get compensation for Lynch I think the Walsh dream is over.

Unless we trade up. Pick 5 and our second rounder for pick 2 and a 3rd round pick.

Agree with this mate. I have really turned my attention the the 'second tier mids' now and trying to do a bit of research on them. Have basically given up on Walsh (so sad!)

He could have been such a fantastic player for the club. Have mentioned that to a few mates of mine and they had absolutely no idea who he was. Have heard he is a very intelligent bloke though. When Dog Cameron hit Andrews, I immediately thought of young Justin. Concussion robbed him of a potentially great AFL career. Hope all is going well for him post footy.

A bit of a bummer, I asked one of the phantom drafters ie. DPS, how Walsh compares for probable impact and upside against McGrath, Taranto and McCluggae taking into account their form over their first 2 seasons and he said Walsh would be similar if not better.

Im getting on board the Smith train. Only get to watch highlights but love watching how hard he is at the contest for such a highly rated kid. Doesnt shy away from the blue collar stuff and has lovely skills on the outside as well. Looks a real competitor.

Surprised you lot didn’t want to murder me when I took him at #3 and overlooked Walsh in the BigFooty Phantom Trial. :P

Yeah read that but you never know. Looks like zero chance we can draft him but if he is that big a fan of the Lions he may ask for a trade. Unlikely but possible
I am hoping we talk to him either before draft or after he is drafted to try and grab him in 1 or 2 years. Why is it only Vic clubs that can talk to draftees that haven't been drafted to them

Very little chance we’ll be able to land Walsh IMO. Such a good Championships performance. Followed that up with dual 33 possession games in the last two rounds of TAC cup. I expect Carlton to select him with pick 1. No chance to be a bust for whichever club drafts him.

Does anyone think we may select Rendell from Sandringham? Been quite solid This year.

Suspect we pass on Rendell.

Wouldn’t surprise me if McFadyen doesn’t land at the Lions somehow.
