Did they? I thought GWS had the Riverina until a year or two ago
That was the academy system that all the northern clubs had, not part of the startup concessions. The Riverina basically didn't produce anyone of note during the startup concessions period, as opposed to after investment in the academies.

How does GWS have salary cap issues? Their top players must be seriously overpaid. Their list isn't that strong.

Skinner is the one . If he can get fully
Fit and get an extended run of injuries
It allows you to play him and Gardiner
On your 2 big forwards and allows Andrews to plAy loose man or on a significantly undersized opponent. With his marking and spoiling power would allow us almost never to be beaten in the air . I honestly feel if Carlton and Gold Coast get acceas to state players on top if priority picks then we have legitimate case to aswell . However the quality of our list is significantly better but at the end of the day surely all that matters is the amount of ticks In the wins collumm

I'm not sure our list is significantly better. You have to remember we had hardly any injuries this season. Not at one point this season was our lack of depth exposed as it was for those 2 clubs basically all season.

I think there's still a spot for a key back. Frost is clearly not rated. I don't rate Walker or Eagles at all. I am putting my hope into Payne or Skinner.

If Collins can play a McGovern type role then there's definitely a spot for him i think but he has to be able to play small because we can't have a second key back who can only play tall.
I like Eagles down back. IMO you could almost classify him as a our "State League" top up player. I watched a fair bit of last years NEAFL grand final and his NEAFL games this year, he is a big intimidating back, who can take a good intercept mark and distribute the ball well, i think he adds a lot to our list while Skinner and Payne are developing.

From what i've seen of Skinner I like a lot, love the way he monsters guys in the tackle.

Gold Coast went all in on magic Gazza beans.

The difference between GWS and the Suns today is all about decision making and having the right people and bugger all about concessions.

Sam McClure on the radio saying (as many others have) that there won't be a start of first round priority pick.

Instead the AFL is likely to give Carlton and Gold Coast priority access to 2 state league players each and a pick (hasn't said whether it will be mid first-round, end of first round etc) which they may be required to trade.
So Carlton and Gold Coast will get two bites if the cherry e.g. PP either mid - end of first round + free hit at a state league player?

Good to see we were looked after to the extent these clubs are going to be despite the Lions being a bigger basket case that either ever were.

******* ridiculous how we’re continually screwed by the AFL

Todays Hun...

THE AFL Commission will decide upon as many as four priority pick requests on Brownlow Medal day as it prepares for clubs to make submissions next week.Carlton and Gold Coast are certain to submit requests after underperforming seasons
Brisbane chief executive Greg Swann on Wednesday said the Lions would likely lodge a request after winning only 18 games in the past four years, the least in the AFL. The AFL made clear that rule for perennial underperformers was unlikely to come in this year, but hypothetically Carlton, Brisbane, Gold Coast and St Kilda would have qualified for an extra pick given five years out of September action.

A YEAR after landing on the scrap heap, Werribee key defender Sam Collins is almost certain to land back in the AFL following a dominant season where he has become the Jeremy McGovern of the VFL.
It is a stunning response from the 24-year-old, who was starved of opportunity across two years at Fremantle before being cut last October after just 14 games.

Foxsports.com.au understands Brisbane and Gold Coast are two of several clubs keen on Collins, with the 194cm, 98kg defender expected to go somewhere in the second or third round, potentially as high as the early 20s.

Said he was ready to be straight back into the afl a month or so ago. Very happy to hear we are in the mix. Deserves his chance. Still think we are working out who fits best in our back 6. Collins is a classic CHB option which frees up Gardiner or Andrews to play smaller.

And there will be more VFL Gold in the draft too.. maybe 5 players in the main draft and another 6 or so in the rookie draft. Very good breeding ground.

Given the AFL is assessing overall list quality w/r to PPs, you would think our very low injury rate and age of core players would see our list being assessed as very similar in quality (perhaps worse long term) than Carlton and Gold Coast.

Can't see us giving up a second or third round pick for Collins. The club said we need more run from the back half, we are set for key defenders.

Certainly looks like an interesting trade and draft period ahead.

I can see us going with the four senior list delistings.

If we do bring in one delisted free agent, that leaves us with just three National Draft picks.

3rd and 4th round picks have little trade value, unless there is a team such as Fremantle who only have their first round pick, then nothing until the 5th round and do want to get back in to the middle of the draft. Or a club, such as Collingwood needs to add some picks/points to match bids on FS and/or NGA academy kids.

I could certainly see us considering packaging our first and second round picks to try and move up in the draft order to draft Sam Walsh. We could even offer our 1st, 2nd & 3rd round picks to Carlton for their 1st round and 4th round picks.

Then we take pick 1 and picks 58 & 65 to the draft. Picks 58 & 65 will give us enough points to match a bid on McFadyen from the beginning of the 3rd round with a minimal third round points deficit to carry over to our 2019 third round pick, and from pick 39 and back outright. Pick 58 will get chewed up, and pick 65 moves to the very end of the draft. Which means we could still use that end of draft pick to match a bid on Keidan Coleman from pick 56 and back.

So we walk out of the draft with Sam Walsh, Connor McFadyen and Keidan Coleman.

Our list is getting to the point where we finally have a little semblance of depth beyond our best 22, with a number of kids fighting to make the first team or cement a first team spot, in Jack Payne and Sam Skinner as key defenders. Cedric Cox and Mitchell Hinge as small defenders. Ben Keays, Jacob Allison, Rhys Mathieson, Zac Bailey and Corey Lyons in the midfield. And Connor Ballenden, Brandon Starcevich and Toby Wooler up forward. We're still a little light on for key position forwards.

Not counting Tom Fullarton and James Madden, as they are still very much project players, until we have some idea of their possible career trajectory after next season.

You add in one high end draft pick (Sam Walsh) and two later draft picks, that's still a lot of kids in the 0 to 4 years bracket trying to crack the what I would imagine to be a fairly stable first team, barring injuries. Will make for a pretty young, and hopefully competitive NEAFL team.

I can certainly see players such as Matt Eagles, Mitch Robinson (if re-signed), Allen Christensen and Sam Mayes being in and out of the first team, and looked as more senior depth players than automatic first team selections.

I'd like to see 4-5 come in through the draft. eg. Bailey Smith/Connor Rozee, Thomas Berry/Xavier Duursma/Liam Stoker, Connor McFadyen, Kiedean Coleman + a mature aged player, Sam Collins?? Marlion Pickett??

I agree with you that we are short on KPF but IMO we are even worse off for proven KPD as well which is why IMO Sam Collins would be worth considering for the right draft price.

My current best 22 players.

Hodge, Gardiner, Robertson
Witherden, Andrews, Rich

Cutler, Mathieson, Zorko
Martin, Berry, Beams

McCluggage, Hipwood, Rayner
Cameron, McStay, Taylor

Bench: McInerney, Christensen, Robinson, Bailey

If you add in a free agent such as Mitch Wallis, that effectively pushes Mathieson to the bench in place of Mitch Robinson, or to the reserves. If you add in a draftee like Sam Walsh, Bailey Smith or Isaac Rankine, they're basically pushing some one (Christensen or Robinson) from the bench pretty early in their AFL career, if not from round one, then you would imagine by round 6, if no injuries occur beforehand.

I believe Eagles and Walker provide adequate depth, and we can still look at Jack Frost as a bail out defender, until Payne and/or Skinner prove themselves, or otherwise. And we can still swing McStay back.

For me, adding midfield and small defender first team players and depth is more important, as we need to replace Hodge after next season, replace Beams in likely 2 years. I'd like to see Rich over taken and replaced by a younger defender in the next 2 years, and Zorko play a lot more small forward in that time.

Who are you seeing as the delistings? I would think Dawson, Paperone, Bell and Bewick.

I love this idea, if we know we will match McFadyen and have an idea he won't get bid on until round 3 then absolutely move a few picks to move up the draft. Bringing in Wallis (if we can) and getting Walsh gives our midfield significantly more depth for next year a well.

I would think the same. As has been mentioned elsewhere, if we want an extra list spot for a free agent or draft pick, possibly Lester gets delisted and rookied.

Also the possibility of an end of first round PP. What are our chances? That pick could be used as part of a trade up or to draft someone like Berry. Or we may have to trade it for a mature age player - Sam Collins perhaps.
