I totally understand where you are coming from but the negativity around the uncertainty around draft picks I find bewildering as you have pointed out missed opportunities with our draft picks but surprisingly Rayner, McCluggage, Berry and Witherden didn't suprisingly turn up on our list. It is a lottery, yes, the acquisition of Neale removes that notion of uncertainty but not at the risk of way over paying for that opportunity. As opposed to the negativity surrounding getting a high quality proven A grade performer that Neale is to our club to fill the exact deficiency we have in exchange for a lottery draft ticket??
Hawthorn and Sydney are very good examples of the value in trading draft picks for proven A grade talent, look where they are and then have a look where we are.
I’d happily trade 5 and 22 for Neale and yes if that isn’t enough I’d go to the draft. But the priority needs to be getting in A grade talent that want to come here.

I don’t agree; you pass than pay the exorbitant demand Freo will have. Why sell the farm for Neale?Way too risky. If Neale requests a trade you get it done.

“Selling the farm” is highly subjective.
It would more likely be 2 top 5 picks if we were to give them that. Neale is not worth that even under contract. Just feels like pick 4 and 22 is the obvious tradeIt is, but some deals are obvious overpays, like Pick 2 for Weller. I hope we'd avoid spending this and next year's first on Neale. I'd love to have him but is he really worth (potentially) two top 10 picks?

Your right, by my reckoning Brisbane alone just looking at the first pick each year generally gets 1 good player to 3 not so good. Rayner, McCluggage although only new then Rich and Luenberger have been serviceable. Schache, Dawson (pick 44 after Beams trade) Aish, Mayes, Longer, Polec, Bartlett (after fevola trade) Henderson, Clark, Wood and so on. Yes if you can get a guaranteed A grader in a trade I'm if favour of taking a chance on a kid especially if you pick is outside the first couple.Equally neither do Spanderman, Mills, Wood, Cupdio or Longer appear on my list. You might’n remover those guys but unfortunate many of us do. False dawn after false dawn. The list of our draft busts vs successes is heartbreaking reading. The reality is there are more draft wipeouts then good players with long careers. The average AFL career lasts less then 6 years. That means players drafted as 18y’s are out of the system by 24. We are looking for A grade talent that play into their early 30’s. Now if we can’t get a proven A grade talent then yes take premium picks to the draft, but if you can take the proven A grader it’s a no brainer.

Yep and we'd be lucky even getting that out of Neale.
At best we'll get maybe 2-3 good years out of Neale, yet most want to give up a heap to get him.
Makes a lot of sense.![]()
