What's a better thing for us to do though, give games to a 28 year old who has done multiple ACLs or see if a second round pick from 2016 can play as a rebounding defender?

We have the slow medium defender demographic well covered with Richy beyond next year anyway (unless we can somehow get someone to take on his contract).
Who plays half back next year... d rich (hope not, never been a defender) ? So cox os ur backup there ? Then who if he cant do it. We r so low on half backs its a joke. Hodge cant carry us. All i suggested was get whitecross on a rookie deal. And if hes required he will be reliable.

Definitely give cox games first but got my doubts hes up to it atm.

Not sure if he had been brought up earlier, but page 114 of the Trade and FA thread *thinking man gif*View attachment 580237

August 2, page 75/76. (Although im sure someone said his name in the 75 pages before me)

I did suggest offering our 2nd rounder for him! Glad the professionals are running the place.

Was today the final day to delist players then redraft as rookies or can it be done right up until the draft? I wonder if we only have the three list spots to use if it means we'll try and trade up a little or just stick with the picks we currently have? There are a few teams with early picks that may want a few more bites of the cherry than they'll presently get and we could help out there.

Even if GWS bring Mumford back they'll still need to draft at least 6 players so they might be willing to trade one of 9/11 for our 18 + 35. Drops one of their early picks back a bit but means they get to draft another player from the 2nd round instead of having to take one from the 5th round. Geelong also have nothing in between 12 and 52 so you'd think that 12 has got to be up for grabs for a reasonable offer.

Hmmmmm, me likey

Given that we were chasing Mitch Wallis as an inside mid/clearance player and missed him and now it appears we have got Jarryd Lyons - for those in the know how does Jarryd stack up against Mitch?

Mitch is a better all-around player but it seems like Lyons has him beat for purely inside work. I think I’d still prefer Wallis but Lyons will be great.

Are we 100% sure we can only draft 3 players now? Or is there a rule hiding somewhere that if you delist someone you can do so whenever as long as you pick them up at draft night?

If not I guess we'll be trying to bundle up some of the picks to get higher.

Strange because Noble seemed pretty genuine on the podcast that we wouldn't be trading anymore and will take what we have to the draft. Maybe he wasn't even sure about getting Lyons then?

The article is written as though the AFL have already signed off on the request.

I would think both clubs had already run it past the AFL before he was delisted

Well it depends really, since Hawthorn haven’t majorly benefitted here and made the steal, the afl might not be happy.

Sorry this is a rambling post about a few draft things...

- Fair bit of speculation teams will go in with 38 on their list next year not full 40. So wouldn’t necessarily add list spots available = draft picks to be used (eg.. GWS/geeloNg trades mentioned above)

- Geelong now has 12, 51 and 70, having traded 59/60 for 51. Does that imply they aren’t using the 3rd pick live? Draft points wise 18/30 for 12 is a clear win for them, not sure they bite though.

- 56 to Someone for a late further 3rd or early future 4th now very much on the cards.

- trade option, 18+35 to Melbourne for 23+28. We lose by about 100 draft points.

- One problem is the middle rounds are loaded with pies, dogs, swans already stocking up to match bids 14 of picks 30-50 are clubs with matching issues (including ours for Macfadyn) so hard to find a good pair of picks to trade for.

- interesting aspect on draft day will be how bidding effects pick swaps. Eg. If we have 35 live and no one has bid on macfadyen we could trade down for pick 40-45 and a future 4th rounder and be confident we’ll nave the points to match but also pick up some flexibility. On flip side pick 30 can match pick 24. So at 24 someone says we’re going to bid on macfadyn now but we’d be prepared to trade 24 to you so you have a live pick instead and offer say 24+60 for 30+35. (We can’t do that as we lose too many points and can’t ma.tch macfadyn but an example of what may happen.)

- pies have stockpiled 5 picks for use as points from 41-60, my understanding is that means they need to take 5 players in the draft as you can only match with ‘live’ picks. Likely to use all 5 picks on 2 players Quaynor and Kelly based on highest bids. There next pick is 93. They could be picking players 3/4/5 of their required picks with the last 3 picks of the draft.

Is this really a problem for us? I don't even think we need to look at trading late picks. The way I see it at least ten or so of those picks ahead of our 3rd round pick are going to be eaten up matching academy bids. Means our 3rd round pick could move up significantly. If our 56 gets moved up to 46 after bids then we could use it to match bids for McFadyen from 35 onwards without needing to trade in anything at all. If we only have the three spaces and intend to draft McFadyen with one of them it means there's really no point hanging on to both 30 and 35 unless we're anticipating early bids for McFadyen.

Could definitely see a scenario depending on where a bid come in for McFadyen that we trade one of our picks for a future pick to the likes of Essendon or Hawthorn. Doubt our 4th pick is likely to be dealt though.

http://m.afl.com.au/news/2018-11-01/after-two-years-expie-desperate-for-return-to-the-big-time

Article about Jonathan marsh who is nominating for the draft - retired at 21 two years ago due to mental health problems. Went back to wa, played wafl and got help.

Gives a comprehensive picture of what was wrong (withdrawing from people around him), why retiring was the right thing to do and the huge amount of work he has done to overcome the problems.

Great insight into what schache went through. Different to beams in a way as there was no trigger event for Marsh. Unless of course beams did have other issues that we know nothing about.

Marsh is heading to Victoria with his girlfriend so, if his footy standard is good enough, I hope he gets lucky and gets drafted for a second time (even if it’s as a rookie). Would show real maturity in the league.

But we only have 3 list spots so pick 56 moving up to 46 is worthless to us unless we trade other picks and it moves up to being one of our first 3 picks. I’m not even sure if we would be allowed to trade it on draft night as it moved up the list because on the day as it won’t be a ‘live pick’.

Which is why I said there's no point hanging on to one of 30 or 35. If that pick 46 will be sufficient to match McFadyen bids and we intend on drafting him we're better off packaging both of those seconders together or one with 18 for a higher pick.
And I'm pretty sure we'd be able to trade 46 if we wanted for any reason. It would only become 46 after the earlier picks have been progressively used to match bids and it seems possible 3-5 players Academy/FS players will be going before McFadyen. In regards to that pick we can basically just sit back and watch the draft unfold and those 3rd round picks ahead of us be absorbed moving it up the list.
