how does it work when guys are contracted, delisted (which i'm guessing effectively triggers a payout of the contract for the following year) and then picked up by another team as a DFA?

I understand that if they come back on our rookie list then their existing contract would just roll into that year essentially, but if picked up in the rookie draft or as a dfa by another side do they have to honour their existing contract? Or do they sign them to the rookie draft contract and we're on the hook for the difference?

As it currently stands with the new rules of trading picks prior to draft night, clubs can pre-agree to release contracted players so they can be picked up by the other team. (Lyons scenario) In Lyons' case he also agreed to forgo his last year's contract with GC (so no pay out by GC) and Lions pick up a new contract. Similar thing could be happening with Allison. Curious to see if another club emerges to pick him up as a DFA. My bet is on Geelong or GC Suns.
Edit: It this emerges I would be closely watching swapping of picks etc.... I'm sure the AFL integrity Dept. will as well.

Hodge is one spot we don’t have to worry about next year, the list is definitely in a lot better shape now, good luck next year with finding delistings Lester obvious as well. That’s 2 spots so all will be fighting hard and trying to show enough to keep list spot. Keays lucky yes after poor year. Lots to prove in 2019.
This all goes well for our team in 2019 no complacency for any of them now.
Mind you Hodge if like 2018 may be hard to move out but rookie him next year if that’s the case . Exciting 2018 draft ahead and 2019 season

Not at all, do you understand the news today? Moving to the rookie list doesn’t mean the contract disappears

My understanding the players contract is with the club, it's not defined as to where in the playing list or lists they sit. there is no breach of contract moving a player from prim list to rookie list. This way a club can create space for new players as long as they have the money spare.

Re. moving up the order. Perhaps we can package 18 and a 2019 second and move up to the low teens. Hoping we hold onto our 2019 first

After what we've seen the club go through over the last seven or eight years to where we are now.....

That’s was my observation as well. Also watched him Neafl and he looked angry to be there at times but didn’t put in as hard as he might to fight his way back to the senior team.

In a couple of years time there wont be a rookie list and we wont have to worry about rookies and cat a and cat b etc etc ... there will just be one list and thats the way it should be. Allison wont sign elsewhere imo. We'll redraft him as a rookie and give him time to develop. Hes 20.

Our club is in the best shape its been since lethal put the whiteboard away.

Worth noting that everything I heard about Allison in his first season was about how coachable he was. Doubt that's gone away
