Here's a fun fact...Carlton are the only team in the history of the AFL to receive 4 number one Draft picks..... Come this draft they’ll receive their 5th...Some poor kid will wake Friday to know he has joined, at this point of time, the worst club in the AFL!

Interesting thought - I was thinking about how 30+35 may get us one pick plus McFadyen. Wouldn't surprise me to see them packaged up for one up, one down. Get an earlier pick for someone we like, and then have a later one for points matching.

GWS hold 19, 25, 52.

I thought it could be 30+35 for 25+52. But given the pushback of picks, possible we've got higher aims?

19 + 52 will be around 22 + 50.
30 + 35 will be around 33 + 38.

Probably doesn't work out for picks, but could be the club do something like 30+35+2019R3 for 19+52 if they like someone like Ely Smith, and think another club could take him before our next pick.

Then we'd have 18, 19, and picks for McFadyen and others (Berry, Answerth, Coleman et al).

Seen this article yesterday and haven’t really seen it discussed here yet

The interesting bit being
“Meanwhile, AFL.com.au has confirmed clubs with rights to father-son and academy prospects will be able to trade their next available selection after a rival bid is received and match that bid's points value with later picks.”

That’s a decent loophole that we can potentially take really good advantage with, we don’t have to pre-empt bids and can keep higher picks live.

Example could be
Sydney get a bid on Blakey, we trade our 2019 round 2 pick for pick 26 and pick 40.
Sydney match with a combination of 33,38,39 (cover a bid as high as 6)

We then use 26 as it should be higher than a bid for McFayden, trade pick 30 to the Swans for their Future 2nd round.

If a bid comes on Connor after pick 35 we have the points to match easily. We walk away with pick 18, 26, 35 and McFayden

If it comes before we simply do the same as Sydney above, trade pick 35 to Say Richmond for their future second rounder, matching with 40 and 56. We then trade the swans future 2nd for Richmond pick 37.

The end result would be we walk away with Pick 18, 26, 37 and Mcfayden, by only downgrading our future second.

Sydney benefits they match for Blakey, get a live selection at 30 and upgrade their future second rounder to ours, lose a couple of picks in the 40s this year.

Richmond upgrade their second selection by two picks and potentially upgrade their future second to Sydney.

There’s a heap of different scenario that could be applied too, hopefully we can take advantage of that.

Don’t think it has been discussed yet and I haven’t found a link to it but in the courier mail today Greg Davis has a story where Noble says we are likely to use our first three picks on midfielders.

Noble also says that he thinks that after the top 10 the talent is pretty even through to the second round.

A few journos now, including Twomey, have us targeting "big bodied midfielders", which is usually code for insiders. One, maybe two - fair enough - particularly if we have decided we want Berry, who is inside, but has the pace to go for a run too. Gotta have some balance though. Depth is a positive, for sure, and there's an element of best available, though I believe the club often bank together a few prospects as "around the same mark", just subject to what else we have/need.
Agree with this

Yes which he has been consistent on this from the start

Awesome idea for a Bigfooty-board game.

It reaches our pick - everyone chuck in your predictions. If you're right, you get to play on once we get to our second pick. See who is last man standing (or calls the whole draft). Early picks would be easier, late picks would probably be more unlikely.

Would require everyone to be online at the same time and not edit posts etc;

Would require anyone playing to be online throughout the draft. Live. Which is more problematic over two days.

Editing a potential problem, plus knowing exactly when the cutoff occurred when our pick was submitted.

Wasn't saying it was a perfect idea - just that it would be fun :-P

Cheat sheet for novices like me who like to play along at home. Only included prospects who appeared in three separate phantoms.

Shaded are academy-linked.

Edit: A couple (Briggs, Rozee, Sturt, Stocker) are out of order as I updated for new phantoms this morning and didn't rearrange - my bad.
Edit 2: I think the ESPN one is Knightmare's power rankings, not his phantom. Couldn't be bothered updating. Still gives an idea of the rough order.

Knightmare's phantom is up: http://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/...*********-knightmare-final-full-phantom-draft

Has us taking Ely Smith and Gold Coast bidding on McFadyen before our second pick. Also has us taking Tom berry with pick 39 (35 after academy bidding) a bit earlier than others have tipped.

Heard from a couple of club recruiters that Bailey Smith has flat out refused to move to an interstate club, and indicated as such in his interviews.

Hope someone outside Victoria picks him TBH. Ties in with this article in HS.

Not the first time this has happened and should be stamped on big-time by the AFL.

But won't be. You know why.

Our academy picks do seem to usually be overrated predraft especially by Knightmare

And all of them in a 13 year period.

I thought Smith was meant to be the ultimate professional? If he has actually said that, then IMO that's very unprofessional. Have no idea what medical issue he would have that would prevent him from being able to play for an interstate club. Seems very strange to me...
