That's my point though! People on here are talking as if Bedford is that type of player (instant best 22 and solves our immediate need at that position).

In reality he may not even play senior football next year.
We're talking about a small forward tho, you don't need to high pick to get a good small forward, and I'd argue that if you used a high pick to get a player who will only even play that role, you wasted your pick.

Stephenson was drafted as a mid/forward capable of winning big midfield numbers as well as kicking bags of goals. We don't need that, (tho wouldn't say no)

Not good omens for us, based on this:

MELBOURNE
2018 picks: 23, 28, 54, 62, 91

Not a lot of big names here. The Dees have had pick 23 once, using it to select Matthew MacKay in 1991 (0 games). Melbourne has never had pick 28 before but has had three goes at pick 54, selecting Daniel Clarke (1992, 0 games), Cameron Hunter (2002, two games) and James Sellar (2011, 23 games). Pick 62 has delivered Daniel Breese (2000, 0 games) and Isaac Weetra (2006, two games), while pick 91 is also new.

On a side note, does anybody know whether Bugg, King, Filipovic, McKenna or Johnstone plan on nominating for the draft?

Johnstone is a chance, I don’t think the others are. Bugg is a popular player amongst the group but did some damage with the Mills hit.

This year is going to be wait and see. The AFL has hinted clubs to the idea of draft night trading going off this year. There is a lot more to happen yet. We may 23 & 28 go somewhere else or maybe both.

The impression I got from my mate during trade period was that there was a lot more to be done, but clubs have been directed to draft night for trades. Adelaide want in the top 5 for sure.

Buggy about to start pre-season with Carlton with a view to convincing them to list him.

I think it’s just that he’s the best value player we are likely to get in this draft, given he’s an academy player for us and we can get him with our next pick after a bid.

I think we can trade next years second so it wouldn’t surprise me if we’d did that, to get another pick inside the top 40 or so this year.
what happens if we trade next years second and get a pick below 40 and someone bids on Bedford? we basically just blew next years 2nd for a pick in the 50s.

whats the deal with if we used pick 28 and say a team bid on Bedford at pick 30 and we say yep no worries we'll use pick 54. can we trade in before that or will that be used by Bedford now that we have a lower pick

Carlton picking up Bugg would be the final nail in Jed Lamb’s coffin you’d think. Wasn’t there something about him maybe being re-rookied? Bugg’s a better forward pest.

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but we only have to match the points of the bid (in this case 30 =629), minus a 20% for being Academy (let’s say 500 total or pick 36). 54 would account for 200
Odd points. We can take a debt over to the next year draft but that would be added to whatever we wanted (if Father sons or Academy available).

Just watched the highlights of Bailey Williams on the AFL draft machine quiet impressive Knightmare has us taking him first pick I’d be happy after watching this kid can play.
yeah he looks a player. I wonder if we could somehow get Sturt, then Williams and then add Bedford as well. probably unlikely, as I think a few are eyeing off Sturt earlier, but it would be good though, those guys were all team mates at the Dandy Stingrays too.

yeah i got no idea with all the ins n outs but i thought after round 1 discount was like 200points n not 20% n i thought the debt thing was only if you couldnt cover it the same year. As in having 2 or 3 guns the same year but couldnt cover the points. im probably wrong on everything but yeah like do you have to cover points if you have them or just take the debt to next year which moves ya pick backwards

Nah it's 20% across the board.

I believe a bid at 30 would go like this ...

30 = 629 points - 20% discount
= 524

We'd then match with ...
54 - Less 220 = 304
62 - Less 123 = 181
and with our next pick not until 91, which doesn't have any points, we'd then go into a deficit for next year, which I'm pretty sure would mean we lose 181 points off our 2nd rounder (as it was a 2nd round bid) which would put our Pick 36 back to Pick 47.

From speaking to a MFC assistant coach a month ago i can definitely say that the hit on Mills had no impact whatsoever on Bugg not getting a game.

Guys like Spargo, Hannan, Fritsch and ANB are what kept Bugg out of the side due adding mire elements to their game. Goody is huge on versatility and the club could not see where Bugg would add any value to another position other then being up forward.

True.

But unless something changes, well be taking 7 picks to this draft which will leave us with some seriously late picks to use.

Getting as many 2nd and 3rd rounders this year and making sure we don’t need many picks next year could be a good option.

Get your point though - we are probably better looking to live trade, once we know when a bid comes for Bedford.

I think I’m starting to understand this live trading/bidding stuff a bit better now..!

Cheers. Had been wondering how this would work.
