i reckon we will only play 2 ruckmen when we need to, Preuss will be used mainly as back up ruck/fwd incase of injury imo.
but if i'm wrong and we do want to play 2 rucks most weeks, and 2 tall forwards, you can bet your arse we won't play 3 tall defenders like everyone thinks we will. that would be 7 talls. that's too many in a side lacking a bit of leg speed already.
also imagine a forward line with T.mac, Weid, Preuss, Melksham, Petracca, Hannan in it. that would be horrid at keeping the ball inside the F50. I cant see even Crazy Goody going that far.

I think it’ll be the likes of AVB, ANB, Melk, Turck, Fritta and Hannan that are under pressure.

I think we’ll go 3 tall forwards, Melk Spargo and Bedford (or another small specialist pressure forward we draft).

Not that I agree with any of this

You think Bedford is going to replace Petracca?

Yeah I agree, there is no way we guaranteed Preuss to play every week, no player gets that guarantee. We will have made it clear that we're interested in playing 2 rucks when required, so against teams with 2 rucks themselves, and when Max needs a rest, or some assistance, betweens Rounds 5 and 6 for instance, when we've got the 4 day break for example.

Even that's better than being left in the Reserves all year behind Goldy like he was this year.

Playing two rucks on the park at the same time would be silly. Gawn can clunk one in the 50 and kick the odd goal, but he's not a better forward option than TMac or Weid (or Hannan, Spargo, Milkshakes, OMac, etc). He should play in the ruck, where he was a little bit handy last season.

If Preuss didn't come to play in the reserves, he should've gone to a club that didn't have a mid-twenties All-Australian ruckman playing for them.
Don't underestimate Gawn's ability to kick goals I think he could kick between 30 and 40 goals this season spending more time up forward. Preuss has kicked 3 goals against GWS.

Preuss isn't guaranteed to play the whole season but I think he is guaranteed to start the season then it will be about form permitting.

Everyone earns their spot.. would never guarantee that.

Preuss will play anytime Gawn is half-done, which I'm led to believe was a semi-regular occurrence this year.

Therefore I have developed the following function for the number of games he will play, given x as a proxy for Gawn's fitness:

P(x) = a*x, where x<0.5 and a = regularity

I think Petracca is going to push up into the midfield group on a much more regular basis.

But if you read all of my post I say I don’t agree with it, but that’s my belief of what the club will do. I know for a fact Goody is a fan of the 3 talks up forward as per Adelaide and West Coast model.

We're not going to dethrone our AA Ruckman to keep a rookie ruck happy. It is a silly suggestion to play Gawn forward. If Preuss is in the 22, it will be as a bench-warming, pinch-hitting forward / backup ruckman... which we really don't need.

No ******* point carrying depth if your best 22 can't win a flag first and combine those 4 lists together and you probably don't even make finals in 2019.
I don't know about anyone else, but IMO, that Geelong and Hawthorn depth looks pretty damn good compared to ours right now.

Collingwoods best 22 is very good, but its their depth that nearly got them a flag. Scharenberg, Treloar, Elliott, Wells, Dunn, Goldsack, Moore, Reid and even DeGoey through club suspension missed huge chunks of the year. All best 22 IMO. This happens to us, and we finish bottom 6 IMO.

I can't see two rucks working for us. But I'm glad we finally have a decent back up ruckman. Pedo tried hard and had a great patch a couple of seasons ago, but Preuss is a beast and will compete well if we need him. Still a strange move by him IMO.

I thought for almost the whole season Gawn couldn't kick goals

We convincingly beat and eliminated both Hawks/Cats in September when it really matters, I don’t see why their perceived depth is something so highly regarded. They have/had bigger issues than depth.

Other thing being we have what 7 or 8 list vacancies to fill? Why judge a renovation halfway through when practically only the dismantling has been done?

Gawn getting managed throughout the season is part of the thought process here I think. His ruckwork is probably our biggest asset and if he plays 90% of every game til round 20 then breaks down, it’s a wasted season. Preuss wants to learn from the best and Gawn seems highly welcoming to it, if we can play Preuss as lead ruck at stages during the year and still win games then it’s a massive boost to our finals chances and Gawn’s overall longevity.

Not sure resting a bloke for three or four games during the season is anything to get excited over, or a massive boost to our finals chances. At the end of the day we could chuck any old dogs body in the middle and still be a decent chance of getting a result as per Gawn getting injured a few years ago.

I'll be honest - I don't get the Preuss trade. If all goes well, he'll play 10 games over the next three years and leave. If Preuss could develop into a decent forward, then surely Norf would have given him a guernsey up forward. If Gawn gets injured and Preuss comes in and is utterly fantastic, then we'll lose one of them. If he's not, then yay... we've got a backup ruckman.

Bigger concern than depth for me is a handful of young players stepping it up a notch.

Kent was generally picked before Hannan when fit, that means Hannan has the chance to become a player that plays full games rather than drifting in and out.

ANB covered a lot of ground this year, and in 17 he showed good foot skills, but its time he imposed himself on the play when the momentum isn't going our way.

KK and Hunt both have a good chance at taking a HB spot, they need to have huge pre-seasons.

Weideman will probably never have Hogan's star power, but what he does have is manic pressure, a good kicking action and the ability to ruck. He needs to be primed for a big fourth season - 30-40 goals should be the expected return.

Petracca now has room in the midfield with Tyson gone and room up forward with Hogan gone. I'd have him playing quasi-CHF with stints through the midfield. he needs to build his tank and see a counsellor about his yips. If he explodes, we'll have a gamebreaker.

Those guys perform, and take the load off the heavy lifters a bit, and we won't need to worry about depth. I'd like us to draft an inside mid to develop, but at the moment we have AVB, Jones and Petracca that can fill in more than ably when we don't have two of Harmes, Viney, Oliver, Bray.
