Haha, was just thinking the same ... pretty sure we hear that sort of crap every year, along with the comparisons to all these AFL legends, when the reality is, if 2 of the top 10 get close to delivering what they're talking about right now, it'll be a rarity. Not to be rude to this years draft crop, but if I had a drink for every time I heard “haven’t seen that before” or “best I’ve seen”, I’d be shitfaced 3 picks in.
Its still an awful decision. The draft never needed gimmicks but every year seems to have a new one. They did announce this like 6 months ago, your window for incredulous indignation has probably closed.
I disagree personally. It'll probably take a few years, and removing the restrictions on trading future picks will help, but when clubs get their heads around the live trading, I think it'll add a lot to the draft, and enable clubs to execute their plans a lot more freely. Its still an awful decision. Brad Johnson answered it for me, because Blakey didn't attract a bid early, they traded it away because they didn't need it for points, but would have lost it for him anyway ... now I'm just annoyed we didn't get it off them if they were going to give it away so cheaply.First Live Trade ... Sydney have traded Pick 26 to West Coast ... for a future 3rd Rounder .... What?
Devastating Boris ... Am I missing something here? why would Sydney trade an earlyish 2nd rounder, for a late 3rd?
All it does is put the first rounders on a bigger platform, that seems to be focus each year. Like when they tried pre-selecting the top 10 then announcing it in reverse to build suspense for #1 pick- another shocker.I disagree personally. The problem is, to maximise it, 2 minutes per pick isn't long enough, and to push it out to 5 minutes and keep it on the same night isn't feasible, lest it go into the wee hours.
I've said before, but I think 100% of the reason they've brought in Live Trading is because of the movie Draft Day ... if the main reason it's been done is for interest and ratings, then so be it, but there is definite benefit to it from a club point of view. All it does is put the first rounders on a bigger platform, that seems to be focus each year. I think collectively they want more interest and ratings for the draft but what they are trying this year minimises the interest of club supporters without a first round pick (and there’s a few- Gold Coast have a bunch of selections). That would easily counteract any potential benefit (if there is any?) of the round 1 getting its own night IMO.
If it goes late or it needs to start earlier then so be it, chopping it in half won’t achieve anything.

Otherwise, this has been going for about an hour, and we've just hit pick 11, and the first round or two traditionally goes quicker than the later rounds (tho I suspect they're pushing things out to squeeze in as much waffle as possible) ... if the draft goes for 70 picks, it'd probably wrap up at about 1am.
Meanwhile, Sydney just exploited the shit out of the live trading, traded 26 out, picked up Blakey, then traded 24 in ... thats brilliant.
Its just the first round ... ends with West Coast at 23 at this stage.at what number does the draft finish up for tonight?
yeah righto. I thought it was just the first 10 for the first night. got that wrong. at least we wont have to wait too long tomorrow for our first pick then. Its just the first round ... ends with West Coast at 23 at this stage.
So much for the Phantom's that had us taking McHenry.
Yeah, I'm really annoyed by Sturt, I liked him in the TAC GF, and was happy to hear we were into him ... plus it's made worse that it was Freo ...Sturt gone as well, maybe Hill will slip?
Maybe just check in on it when it's all done tomorrow afternoon then? The AFL have managed to ruin Brownlow night by filling it full of crap, now they've ruined the draft. 2 days!! Plus this live trading is absolute nonsense. This game is becoming far too Americanised. These kids are nobodies right now. Sure, get excited about your clubs new selections, but unless you're full on into under age footy, they are just reading names no one knows. Its not like America where College football or basketball is huge! I can understand making a big deal of the draft, but the AFL?? This is ridiculous. Plus it's so bloody dull on tv. Just get on with it..
Sorry ... apparently its over at 22 with GWS ... The AFL's own Draft Tracker has West Coast's pick 23 listed in the 1st roundat what number does the draft finish up for tonight?
