You don’t want Gilbert around the club at all
Hodge came as the Captain of a Club that personifies a winning culture
Not sure what Gilbert would bring other than dismal failure tips
That is disingenuous. Hodge lucked onto an era at Hawthorn that was successful, but he came to it when it was so rubbish it needed priority picks. Gilbert similarly came to St Kilda when it was rubbish and played through many years of success in teams that regularly smashed Hawthorn. Sam Gilbert played in 11 finals matches, including 3 Grand Finals. Luke Hodge didn't play finals until his 6th season, then played 23 finals in the Hawks dominant era. Gilbert has a 55.29% winning record, Hodge has a 57.1% winning record. Really not a lot of difference.

Sorry but comparing Sam Gilbert to Luke Hodge is like comparing Pauline Hanson to Elle McPherson ;simply no comparison.
Don't care if he was born at Metricon Stadium the guy offers zero .

kk and scrimshaw really are the san type.
Need one in the team. Be horrible to lose both

You're taking my post the wrong way. I initially put up the post as a speculator to guage opinion. When people come on making ridiculous statements like you've just made it just proves you are a pretty bad judge of talent. I just compared the 2 and Gilbert came out looking reasonably good. We all know he's not Hodge and I didn't suggest that he'd be the next Gaz. I asked some specific questions about specific scenarios and you came along with your flamethrower before reading what was written. And if you've missed what I've previously said about Hodge, I think he's over rated, he's a thug, he gets away with literally putting other players in hospital with so much as a free kick and I really wouldn't want him near my footy club.

For any other people saying Gilbert would "offer zero" would you care to back up your claims? So far I've just read excessively negative rejections and openminded, non-commital agreement. Where's the inbetween? Can anybody articulate why Sam Gilbert would be so terrible as either a player, a development coach who plays the odd NEAFL match or even as a spectator?

personal opinion rather than fact, but if a bloke isn't good enough to get a game for a team that finished 2 premiership points above us, they aren't going to offer anything substantial to us either.

Roughead
McVeigh
Harry Taylor
LeCras

The sort of players on their last legs who I think could offer something to us as far as leadership and culture are concerned

Would defiantly throw a tidy package at Roughead for 2 years. Hawthorn captain, would bring massive leadership, could catch up with his mate Hodgey all the time.

He is a rebounding defender who has no speed anymore and disposal is terrible, can’t defend anything, is old, slow and injury riddled. Better off bring back nick Malceski

Did you know Gilbert is a Queenslander? Nothing to offer our young defenders as a playing coach in the NEAFL? Other clubs are routinely drafting in recent AFL players to play a coaching role and be a top-up player.

You do realise that Nick Malceski is now our NEAFL coach? Why wouldn't you consider Sam Gilbert in a coahing/top up NEAFL playing role?

Also, I think you mean to say that Gilbert has lost some speed, his disposal isn't good enough, he can no longer defend like he used to and he is showing his age. Thanks for making the effort and I hope I didn't lose anything in the glass half full translation.

We had a fantastic role model playing type Coach in the NEAFL and we delisted him.

He would offer money at the canteen, Whilst watching the neafl?
Better?

Not so sure Mick was entirely happy remaining in that role and the kind of dollars he was on would be unsustainable. I totally agree that he was good for the NEAFL players, both senior listed and Academy guys. In particular, you could see Barlow building partnerships inside with guys like Brodie, Lonergan, Dawson and Foster, the first 3 of whom took that kind of form in their AFL games and the other stated his case for a rookie spot by showing he could follow team structures with MB leading the way.
In the same way, I could see Gilbert developing guys like Ballard, Scrimshaw, Koenen, Graham and Leslie through the NEAFL. I haven't seen enough of his 2018 season to really push his case for the AFL side, but he looks tailor made for a NEAFL role, something that had we had a couple of sneaky topups and eligible player-coaches this season may have meant the club made finals and the younger players got to play for something worthwhile.
Yet to see anybody comment on Gilbert's character, which to me seems to be quite affable.

He was the player who let the St Kilda school girl get photos of his teammates dicks and post the on the internet - top bloke

So Lynch, May, Barlow, Rosa, Hall, KK, Scrim, Martin all gone or rumoured to go

WTF is going on, that’s an list implosion. Even if half this happens we may as well close the doors
Trade week will be interesting because clubs or players make choices they have to live with. Some are failures, some look genius and others balance out. I always look at Franklin...it seemed a disaster for Hawks but they then won 2 flags without him so everyone moves on...The club needs to build culture asap but its a slow process. IMO its based on honesty, communication and commitment to their player development...IMO it seems good plans r in place but not perfect in difficult 2018.
He loves showing video highlights of Scrim on a few Victorian boards in the past week.
What are you suggesting? i cant chat about a subject in another room? 1. Theyre not highlights they are edits of the complete game. 2. Sorry Im interested to correct disinformation. Pretty ordinary mate!
