Vale KK. Hopefully you can become even a shadow of the player you were destined to become before the head injuries.

Not sure where he fits in the Melbourne team once Lever is healthy, but I'm sure that's the least of his concerns right now.

Probably get a token pick back.

The majority of posters here hate Scott Clayton and last year's Draft gave them plenty of material to sink the boot in. The reality is that Clayton's worth needs to be judged over the duration of his time recruiting at the Suns as well as the Bulldogs and Lion as well as what happened last year.

Around this time in 2017 the Club came out and announced that Scott Clayton would not be retained for 2018 but that he would carry out his duties for the Draft, presumably because he'd been conducting the scouting and negotiations for trading and drafting. The WC pick trade looks like an unmitigated disaster now, but it was made during the Lachie Weller negotiations which were done over Clayton's head. Clayton's calculations were that the Suns and Eagles both finish mid-table and that trading 3 second round picks would get the Suns into the 2018 top 10 draft picks. The Eagles argued for the Suns' future 2nd rounder, which is the one that illustrates just how badly the deal ended up.

The thing is, nobody really knows who gave the order for Clayton to make that deal. We do know that it was made in an attempt to get Freo to trade Weller without having to give up pick #2. We also know that the Weller Trade made Clayton look visibly nauseated on the trade deadline footage. The legacy he left the Suns isn't a disastrous pick trade because almost nobody mentions that we got Brayden Crossley out of it and we still have pick #18 whereas we really didn't need all those 2nd round picks. His legacy will be like it was at the Bulldogs and the Lions = the core of a successful team.

Scott Clayton's genius is flawed. He was undoubtedly a good scout and did very well in trade negotiations in and out of the club. He even managed to salvage the Weller Trade that he was ordered to make at all costs by identifying Charlie Ballard with the pick Freo sent as an afterthought with Weller. However, he was unable to build a successful list capable of winning a Premiership. At Brisbane, he came close and you could say that he was sabotaged by the merger because his amazing list ultimately remained together to win 3 flags. At the Bulldogs, he drafted some incredible talent that came close to glory and several players who were behind the 2016 flag. Any success the Suns have in the next 8 years has to come back to Clayton's recruitment, but not many were sad to see him go.
Well thought out and pretty accurate overall BUT who's doing the talent scouting now? One of the current team was a stats guy for the Suns a few years back so not sure what he knows about recruiting and having an eye for talent? Who's the main man this year and will be handling the trade negotiations and drafting?

Trade negotiations would be Cameron & Dew. Talent ID would be a team. We’ve brought in an old hand in Stibbard to help out as well.

Brayshaw's form after all his concussion concern gives me hope

Is anyone else surprised with how many guns we have on our list??? Thorughout the year we’re constantly bashed for having the weakest list in the league however when a players name gets thrown up in a trade they are suddenly a gun, see Hall, KK, Barlow and Scrimshaw.....
I havent heard anyone say the list is week here in Vic. Actually quite the opposite. The criticism is about the culture plus some narrow minded ones believe the AFL is wasting its time growing the game in Qld.
These are the glass half empty individuals we have to share this world with.

IMO if you sat down with all players wanting to leave, their sense of belonging would be low. Suns need to build an environment where players are embraced for their talents rather than berated for their inadequacies. The players you mentioned are all highly capable at the level but new management by nature, rather than work out what makes individuals tick, quickly choose sides embracing some and not others. This divides and alienates and is an old school ego driven approach that doesnt work, particularly with millennials. This embracing of the positives of a player is acknowledged to be the main factor behind the Buckey/Pies improvement.

All the trade scenarios I've read hardly even mention what we may receive for May if he is to be traded. The entitled Vics just assume they will pick him up for next to nothing.

Im interested in a Suns take on Scrimshaw. Whats the knock on him?
The club has no knock on him. Hes a highly talented immature tall whos body is still developing (grown 2cm since his draft) and has had some frustrating minor set backs like a close family members death, fractured cheek and a KO. Club calls it a slow burn but hes frustrated hes not playing and this reflected in a brief period of attitude correction. Hes primed ready for a strong pre season, then we will see why he went pick 7 in his draft.

With KK on the way out, Scrimshaw will be a permanent fixture in the Suns back line next year, I'm looking forward to seeing him dominate after a strong preseason.

Let’s hope so. Because Matthew Lloyd who apparently coached him at school just said we were the wrong club for him to go to, and he needs to come back to Victoria to learn how to be a professional AFL footballer so he isn’t lost to the game.

Scim on HBF, Ballard on the wing and move Weller into the middle[/] I dont see Ballard as a winger with outside/running/ball using abilities. With further body development he is more a key forward or back.

Lloyd hurts my brain

I think KK can play outside winger or HF.

Up here we’ve heard a lot from down south about how poor our list is. Just as an example listening to Trade Radio when they go through each clubs’ needs, they target one or two types for other clubs but when they get to the Suns there’s a s****** before they state we need everything. Then there’s the criticism about culture as well and that we aren’t the right club to develop immature youngsters- see Matthew Lloyd’s comments on Jack Scrimshaw.

Lloyd is head of football at Haileybury, he sits across all year levels. The senior coach is mentored by him. Lloyd also worked with him at the AFL academy. Frankly it has been a tumultuous time of change at the Suns where theres big picture focus with little time invested into the personal development of each player. I believe change is planned to build a good player welfare/development department in future so from that aspect youd have to agree with Lloyd but lets hope the Suns can fix that quickly.

I know so-called “experts” will be looking at the Suns players who are looking to leave and Pressing the Big red button on the Club!

I feel it’s a massive opportunity for the club to get players who want to Play and stay. The Weller pick swap was absolutely necessary,he Wanted to come here! And it payed off. So if a Miles,GHS,Ellis plus a Collins etc,who want a second chance, then let’s give it to them, having experienced AFL players come in is essential. And who ever we get in those early picks will play Seniors next year.

Remember...this is the Best Draft since 2001(Super Draft), this Draft is deep with talented players!

They say it’s a super draft every year.

There has been wholesale changes made at the Suns in recognition the culture needs to change. CEO, Head of Footy, List Manager, Coach and several assistants etc. That imposes a huge upheaval in any organization and only time will tell if they made the right moves.

Personally I think theyve changed too much too soon and it extends the time it takes to reach the goal, mainly because its not factored that some new people are not always as good as you thought they were and those you let go, had skills that were needed in hindsight.

You have to take it that in VIC there are a lot of fanatical followers who love to talk anything footy. They were bagging the AFL over the exact same things about Sydney until they won flags and became recognised as a club with “good culture”.

“Its a rugby league state, people will never follow the game, the AFL are wasting our money” have heard it all. They also bagged Brisbane the same way until 3 in a row. Now its GCs turn! Just laugh at them would be my advice! Narrow minded people who cant see the forest for the trees.

Suns getting smashed left right and centre.

The only thing to break our back in half right now..

Would be...

Stuart dew to say.. eff this shit. Im out.
Dew would relish this challenge.
He knocked back the Melbourne gig & wanted this one.
The Melb media fail to understand that it’s a 3/4 rebuild but with better starting pieces than in 2010 with Ainsworth, Miller, 2MP, Brodie, Bowes, Swallow, Fiorini, Thompson, Crossley, Ballard, Weller etc.
Add some real top end talent this draft, mature state league types and let mature big bodies like GHS, Miles do some heavy lifting.
I’ve never been more confident in the direction we’re going.

Well put.

Also agree that changing too much too soon puts you at risk of making the recovery a lot longer. hopefully those we have in now are, for the most part a solid core.
