Dew would relish this challenge.
He knocked back the Melbourne gig & wanted this one.
The Melb media fail to understand that it’s a 3/4 rebuild but with better starting pieces than in 2010 with Ainsworth, Miller, 2MP, Brodie, Bowes, Swallow, Fiorini, Thompson, Crossley, Ballard, Weller etc.
Add some real top end talent this draft, mature state league types and let mature big bodies like GHS, Miles do some heavy lifting.
I’ve never been more confident in the direction we’re going.
Exactly. We have a better foundation in place. The kids can be shown the right way with the right people around them now, Actual AFL standard training facilities and the right mature age players around. The first attempt was a **** up. Time to try again

There has been wholesale changes made at the Suns in recognition the culture needs to change. CEO, Head of Footy, List Manager, Coach and several assistants etc. That imposes a huge upheaval in any organization and only time will tell if they made the right moves.

Personally I think theyve changed too much too soon and it extends the time it takes to reach the goal, mainly because its not factored that some new people are not always as good as you thought they were and those you let go, had skills that were needed in hindsight.

You have to take it that in VIC there are a lot of fanatical followers who love to talk anything footy. They were bagging the AFL over the exact same things about Sydney until they won flags and became recognised as a club with “good culture”.

“Its a rugby league state, people will never follow the game, the AFL are wasting our money” have heard it all. They also bagged Brisbane the same way until 3 in a row. Now its GCs turn! Just laugh at them would be my advice! Narrow minded people who cant see the forrest for the trees.

I agree with the too much change too soon view you have. Change management is an important part of running any organisation and whenever I see lots of changes not effectively managed it always rings alarm bells. With a young organisation like the Suns, making wholesale changes in the hope of driving improvement is fraught with danger. You need a stable process before you start making changes. This is like a Hail Mary approach from the AFL / Suns with the raft of recent changes. It's either going to pay off or blow up in their faces.... again.

The thing to me is they have a “if you dont want to be here then we dont want you attitude. Thats OK but if that means you let go Lynch, May, Hall etc players with elite talent and in bring fringe players from other clubs, you just lost your ability to win a flag! Suns have to be better at understanding what makes individuals tick and creating an environment for them to flourish.

Evans spent long enough reviewing the place before making wholesale changes.
It’s not how many changes are then made but ensuring the right people are in place. Gary March was quoted in a good story a year ago about Craig Cameron’s influence in Richmond’s rebuild calling him an unsung hero.
Jon Haines highly regarded & Dew involved in premierships at 3 clubs.
He’s not going to get along with everyone for various reasons but the core group of young leaders rave about him and are invested. That’s what I look for.

Would be a good pick up if it happened. Hunt is contracted to the demons until 2020
Trade radio suggested him to Carlton , these guys are a joke. Hunt going to play VFL for Casey if KK joined Melbourne

The club has no knock on him. Hes a highly talented immature tall whos body is still developing (grown 2cm since his draft) and has had some frustrating minor set backs like a close family members death, fractured cheek and a KO. Club calls it a slow burn but hes frustrated hes not playing and this reflected in a brief period of attitude correction. Hes primed ready for a strong pre season, then we will see why he went pick 7 in his draft.

That is the best thing I have read on the Suns for weeks.
In year 1, Ainsworth showed some AFL quality.
By the end of year 2, Bowes and Brodie had also shown some AFL quality.
If any of those 3 don't make it, lack of AFL quality will not be the problem.

Here is hoping that TheScrim joins the list in year 3, followed closely by Scheer.

The majority of posters here hate Scott Clayton and last year's Draft gave them plenty of material to sink the boot in. The reality is that Clayton's worth needs to be judged over the duration of his time recruiting at the Suns as well as the Bulldogs and Lion as well as what happened last year.

Around this time in 2017 the Club came out and announced that Scott Clayton would not be retained for 2018 but that he would carry out his duties for the Draft, presumably because he'd been conducting the scouting and negotiations for trading and drafting. The WC pick trade looks like an unmitigated disaster now, but it was made during the Lachie Weller negotiations which were done over Clayton's head. Clayton's calculations were that the Suns and Eagles both finish mid-table and that trading 3 second round picks would get the Suns into the 2018 top 10 draft picks. The Eagles argued for the Suns' future 2nd rounder, which is the one that illustrates just how badly the deal ended up.

The thing is, nobody really knows who gave the order for Clayton to make that deal. We do know that it was made in an attempt to get Freo to trade Weller without having to give up pick #2. We also know that the Weller Trade made Clayton look visibly nauseated on the trade deadline footage. The legacy he left the Suns isn't a disastrous pick trade because almost nobody mentions that we got Brayden Crossley out of it and we still have pick #18 whereas we really didn't need all those 2nd round picks. His legacy will be like it was at the Bulldogs and the Lions = the core of a successful team.

Scott Clayton's genius is flawed. He was undoubtedly a good scout and did very well in trade negotiations in and out of the club. He even managed to salvage the Weller Trade that he was ordered to make at all costs by identifying Charlie Ballard with the pick Freo sent as an afterthought with Weller. However, he was unable to build a successful list capable of winning a Premiership. At Brisbane, he came close and you could say that he was sabotaged by the merger because his amazing list ultimately remained together to win 3 flags. At the Bulldogs, he drafted some incredible talent that came close to glory and several players who were behind the 2016 flag. Any success the Suns have in the next 8 years has to come back to Clayton's recruitment, but not many were sad to see him go.
I don’t agree with taking into account his work elsewhere as it is irrelevant to the work he did at the Suns. I know the Suns environment was more challenging but he was dreadful. The Weller and Eagles work is just the worst examples.
Kk, Gorringe, Garlett, Lonergan, AhChee, etc, how many of the 2010 draft are left on the list
He was the head scout throughout or existence, putting it another way how many have have proven to be master strokes?? Saad maybe

Melbourne had a brilliant Draft in 2014 and it only really came together for them this year. They will be flag favourites with a reasonable Trade period. The Suns have been having good Drafts since 2015 (Ah Chee, Fiorini, Schoenfeld, MacPherson, Joyce) but 2016 was a generational Draft with Bowes and Scheer coming through the Academy and Ainsworth, Scrimshaw and Brodie coming in the top 10. This year could bring a similar haul!

2019 will be the year that Ainsworth emerges as a midfielder/forward, Bowes will further develop as an outside mid, Brodie will take up the inside mid and Scrimshaw will get time in the backline. We all know what the others can do, they just need to do it more and consistently.

Scrimshaw had a tough year in the NEAFL with injury and the backline fell apart around him. I watched him closely and he was pushing for an AFL start all year, but had setbacks along the way that meant he had to miss games and then build up his match fitness through the NEAFL. The club had a bad flu go through the playing group but it was never ventured as an excuse even though quite a lot of players missed games. Scrim played through it although his form suffered as a result. By the time his form was really demanding an AFL start the season was all but over.

Backline for 2019

B: Harbrow, Thompson, Joyce
HB: Scrimshaw, Ballard, Hanley

If May stays, send him to the forward line.

Would be so disappointed(that,s an easy emotion for a Suns supporter eh)if Scrimshaw left
I think he could be the player we wanted KK to be but never quite was
I’ve always rated him as the pick of the 2016 crop
