OK thanks for that Ben I listened to it. So firstly Graig did not say he had a work ethic issue. He said has not embraced the lifestyle he needs to embrace...YET.

He also went on to say they were at the top of their salary cap and they were working on ways to reduce it. Also that they needed to draft and retain top end talent and invest in off field player welfare. This is what I have been banging on about in other posts.

Whilst this might sound like a player issue I can tell you its not. It is a Suns issue mostly. Again, they are a professional organization who need to get better at making players feel welcome, included and comfortable in the environment. Jack does NOT have a work ethic issue. He had a confidence and sense of belonging issue and the club have been poor at managing that, not just for Jack but for many before him I believe.

Craig has clearly said they need to get better at it and he would be a better player in Melbourne. What do you think he meant by that? He is saying Melbourne clubs are better at managing their players welfare. Hes never going to say the Suns have a problem with keeping players because they are poor at player welfare. I do think he should have owned it a little better by admitting it is a problem they have rather than tipping it on the player.

All that aside, the facts are they were playing other players ahead of him when his performances were better IMO, so I do believe what wasnt mentioned is a "if you dont want to be here then we dont want you, attitude" where ego got ahead of their focus on player development.

Craig also didnt mention that he was emergency 5 out of the last 6 weeks...what does that suggest? A work ethic issue? Hardly.

I believe, all they had to do was play him and it would have fixed 90% of the problem as it did with Will Brodie. He needed the club to show they believed in him but instead he was left out in the cold not knowing what they thought of him. At round 19 Jack had is first one on one chat with Dew, Jack approached him! Compare that to another mate of Jacks I spoke to today, at another club, he told me he has had countless one on ones with his coach and understood clearly what they expected from him. Communication is also not at its best.

In a more positive note, Craig did comfirm my faith that they understand the issues and have plans in place to fix them and lets cut Dewie some slack. He's had a very tough first year and Im sure he has learned a lot and will get better.

Mate youre not correct about his face on draft night...he knew he was going there and was wrapped to go. He was disappointed his mate Tim Taranto wasnt going there and it is an extremely high pressure moment for a kid in that situation. He was actually relieved he wasnt going to Freo purely because of the distance away from home. His look would have been relief that he was drafted because later I can tell you he had a beaming smile and a great after party.
Hey Gromma thanks for giving us an insiders perspective. As for Cameron’s comments on Scrim being better in a Melbourne club there are many ways to interpret it. To me it sound like he might feel more pressure to perform with a spot light on him.

Personally I hope he stays and see some out his side of the contract

Good point but Id like to think it could be the opposite. He has always from U9s, stood up in big games where the spotlight is on, TAC Cup GF, VIC v SA decider for national champs, the Syd v GC win for the first time at the SCG in the NEAFL this year etc. Lets see.

Another point not mentioned is the social and cultural differences between the GC and Melb. It is hard to get used to and does take time. By comparison, Brodes and Benny Ainsworth are country vic and Bowesy is from Qld, they dont come from a 4.5M person city like Melb.

Try to imagine socially they go from being put up on a pedastal as an AFL academy, VIC representative whos likely to get drafted, a very big thing here. Where everyone knows who he is and havent met them yet in their social circles, to standing in a social group in the GC and they mainly talk about surfing and rugby league. Couldnt give two hoots about him playing AFL. Thats something some kids love and others are flattened by.

Then they enter an ultra competitive professional and serious AFL club where their teammates look at them like they are not ready to give up their spot in the team for this new kid. Very intimidating. They finish their working day totally exhausted, dont want to go out for fear of being seen to be unprofessional. When you live in your home state at least after work you go home to a familiar environment and catch up for dinner with parents, siblings and mates you went to school with since 5yo. Old school generations like me, say harden up mate and they do eventually. My point is it takes time because what pushes through, is their determination to fulfill their dream and the same competitive streak that got them drafted. This goes to my comparison between Brodes and Scrim.

I believe it all changed for Brodes when they played him and he put in a couple of good games. Confidence, the benefit of knowing the match committe believed in him and preparation means a lot. Not playing Scrim was IMO, the worst thing for his self belief and development and for retaining him at the club to be honest. Also, after a while, and I saw signs of it towards the end of this season, maturity starts to kick in and at some stage, a hardened body from 2 or 3 pre-seasons. Kids who were fully grown at 15 find it easier but 20yo talls who are still growing take longer. I think of Sam Powel-Pepper who was a man at 15 and was ready from day one at Port. I think Suns are aware of all these points but Im not sure they know how to manage it when they have so many other things on their plate with so few resources. The club psych (the one I met) for example, lives in Sydney and flies up one day a week maybe, so these are the resources Craig is talking about...my guess is the big clubs have these guys there a lot more often.

Anyway, Im pleased you appreciate the insight and hope it sheds some light on the complexities.

If pick 5 is dangled I’m pretty sure he’d change his tune

If may wont commit already beyond next season, then I think its imperative for the Suns to ditch May now, if the Hogan move to Freo goes ahead, then demand pick 5 absolutely. Take 2, 3 and 5 to the draft and reload with good young talent.

I hope jack realises the opportunities he may get next season at the suns. Possibility KK is on his way out, Richa on the rookie list may get more time in the NEAFL, and guys like Weller will likely become a full time midfielder like he did towards the end of the season.

I would hope Dew acknowledges this too, that vacant half back position is well suited to a player of Jack's potential and I hope he has a good crack at it in the preseason to try and win it.

Gromma, not sure who you are.
But appreciate your posting and not getting angry towards us heartbroken suns fans.

Just hope Scrim can suck it up one more pre season and play out 2019 with the Suns.
2019 will look a hell of alot different then 2018.
Might not have success but all the ducks are lining up in a row.
And scrims nows on the top of the list to replace KK and May down back.

Id hate to think he went to a Hawthorn or someone where there standards are alot higher and more pressure on guys to perform Aka Jono O’Rourke pick 2 delisted by hawks this week
then do another pre season with us and be the next Will Brodie.

Happy and playing amazing football

AFL tradewrap says we are considering key defender Jack Hombsch from Port. Contracted but Port want to move him on.
Was really good a couple of years ago but injuries have really broken him down over the past few seasons. Hopefully we can get him a bit right. Don't think he has those near-AA year in him any more.

I wonder if we would go Ah Chee from West Coast? They only brought him on got a one year deal IIRC. His ability to play forward and inside mid is what Dew is looking for in a player.

How many lists spots we have again? :/

How many half back flankers do we have on the list? Even if we were to tell Scrim we were going to look to play him who would miss out?

Would Weller and Hanley have to play up on the wings / on ball to fit everyone in?

Could Ballard and Scrim play in the same side?

Ballard very versatile so yes. = westoff

Probable senior list in:

Miles
Horlin-Smith
C.Ellis
Hombsch

5 x draft

Puts us up to 9 senior listed ins already.

1 extra senior spot + decent $$$ to attract another player if May is traded.

Who do we get if we end up with picks 2, 3 and 4 (for May)? Luko, Rozee and Smith? Or do we go the trifecta of SA guys and pick up Rankine?
Either of those 2 options works for me.

Smith appears to be the more solid professional and can play back/mid - as Vic metro player will always be the risk he goes home at some stage

Rankine is an absolute freak show (similar to Harley). Has the confidence in his own ability but just need to be sure he is committed to being a pro and doing the little things and he will be the best player in this draft

Say Carlton gave up pick 1 for Dylan Shiel?
Who would GWS then go after? Lukious?

Could Sam Walsh fall into our lap at 2?

Then do we go Bailey Smith? And rebuild our midfield completely..

Or do you take walsh then your choice of Rankine and Rozee?

You dont want to split the twins

Would either be Walsh or Smith for us at 1 FWIW. We won’t be getting pick 1 though

I think the media reported we would likely take Pickett via national draft not as a state league priority.

I guess it means our 3 state league priority players would all be signed to the rookie list which has been extended.
Why would we risk another club taking him first through the ND when we can guarantee him as a predraft concession?

Not sure. Maybe we are looking at taking him relatively early for a mature state league player? Ie. Somewhere in the 2nd Rd, which would definitely be before any other club.

Maybe it’s a pre-arranged deal we have with him so he knows he is getting a 2 year contract instead of a 1yr rookie? Dunno mate, just speculating.
