There aren’t too many returning to SA lately after being drafted. Even Burton had to be dragged back kicking and screaming.

Who have we actually gone after? We have to chase them with big money and be willing to give up 1st round draft picks. There haven’t been that many that we have even asked. I am actually not sure of exactly which players we have gone after but been rejected by. I think I read on BF that we went after Gibbs as an FA but he turned us down.

But do you actually know why they stay in Melbourne? I don’t think you guys are thinking this through. The general appeal, the after football media opportunities and third party financial rewards of being a top footballer in Melbourne is not even comparable to the Gold Coast. Adelaide has you comfortably covered. I think you will find the reasons the good SA blokes stay in Melbourne simply don’t apply to the Gold Coast.

In the next few years our top earners come out of their current contracts (Tex, Lynch, Eddie, JJ, Gibbs etc). We will have money to go after the best players we can attract to Adelaide.

If you are so confident why not just wait two years, deep down you knew you prefer to get Rankine in this year draft ,but We can't change or decide what GC recruiters pick during draft night .

It’s a bigger worry when even Sth Australians like Wingard, Polec want out of the state.
Lachie Neale, another SA boy, happy to leave Freo for Brisbane.
With our new facilities, staff, assistants in place I’m not the slightest bit worried about SA kids leaving if we draft them.

Looking at your list, in a few years your window to win it all could be shut down and you may not be that attractive destination.

I am happy to go to the draft with what we have. Hamish Ogilvie’s record with the kind of picks we have is 2nd to none.

But still, I prefer to pay a fair price now. Especially for Luko because if he does go on to be a star my feeling if his manager is worth his salt, he would advise him to move to Melbourne. The media opportunities after football and the off field financial rewards is something that we can’t compete with. With Rankine it’s purely to get ahead of Port. Not fussed about Rozee at this stage. Would love him at 8, but otherwise I wouldn’t be trading up to get him. Would pass on Hately at 8, but would love him at 13.

As to the reason, I am disturbing your board with my posts. It’s because of this idea you seem to have that you will be a second home to SA players. I just have to say I completely disagree. For one thing, I could see myself choosing to stay in Melbourne if I had been so fortunate to be drafted. I couldn’t get out of the Gold Coast fast enough. Not meaning to be rude and apologies. But there is no mayo on that. I’ve lived in Melbourne but only visited the GC. Maybe it grows on you.

Fair enough , like I said GC recruiters might not have your type of thinking , I can agree with your opinion but you do know that Dew don't give a ***# what we think GC should pick .

That's what I thought - Crows are going to be rubbish in a couple of years when all these guys are in the death throws of their careers.

Looking at Port's list and a lot will have to go right with this year's picks to get some young talent in the door to prop them up.

If the Sun's can get the next 2 years right with presumably 5 x top 6 picks and a good crop of 22 yo and under kids with 100 games under their belt then there prospects should be looking good if they get the culture tight.

The 3 peat Lions showed that if you can have success then there are plenty of opportunities for players after football.

So lets worry about that in the next few years then.
By then you might have higher draft picks of interest to us ..or..
you can give us a Tex in his twilight , or a Matt Crouch to get your Lukosious / Rankine back….

Sad but true and I can understand why as we have a very unprogressive society.

Takeaway the drunken rednecks and the Gold Coast would be a great place to live.

Wow, where did you visit...Chirn Park? Nerang? Most of our players prefer Nobbys, Burleigh, Palm Beach. Not as many drunken rednecks as you'd like to believe

I reckon he was just trolling, the only drunken pack animal rednecks you come across are in Surfers Paradise usually packs of blokes from out of town on what we loosely refer to as “footy trips”.
We all just stay out of Surfers and count the money coming in from these imbeciles and we say thank you for that money too.

A friend who said he knows Brendon Goddard's manager told me Goddard to the suns is looking very likely. The AFL are pushing for it too so his salary will probably be partly offset in an ambassador type role also. Similiar to what Mark Robinson said in the Herald Sun yesterday.

"GOLD Coast has pick No.80 in the AFL draft and will use it on a delisted free agent.

They should use it on Brendon Goddard."

I have visited Adelaide once myself and I thought the big dump I left in one of the public toilets there wasn’t even as shit as the city. But you’re right maybe it grows on you....

We should take that into consideration if we ever consider drafting kids from the GC. I’ve lived in Melbourne and Perth and I loved them both. Love visiting Brisbane. Stayed with a friend who lived on the river. It’s awesome. Spent a week on the GC and I just didn’t like the place. Hated it. Perth is much of a muchness to Adelaide. Find them very similar in many ways. Melbourne is just a great place to live out of uni. I can see why players wouldn’t come home from there. In a sense I am agreeing with your poorly chosen insult.

But the GC is a different story. You are drawing a really, really long bow here to suggest that the same reasons that keep our players from leaving Melbourne can even come close to applying to the GC.

Even if the GC community one day got behind this franchise, you are still coming from a long way back to even have the same appeal as Brisbane, let alone the Melbourne clubs that our players have historically stayed put.

Being a Suns supporter is hard enough at times, let alone having a dummy spitting senior Goddard on our team. Having a 34yr old on our list is a waste of a spot, comparing him to Hodge is laughable

Have you ever been here outside of Surfers? What the **** are you on about? This is the most beautiful place in Australia to live. I can literally see the beach from my bedroom window and its quiet as hell. The rednecks are in Logan Brisbane and maybe some in north GC. Adelaide makes this place look like heaven.

Bit harsh. Just so you know, when we take him right back off you, it’s nothing personal.

No one goes back to SA until they have kids and need their parents. Its a ****ing shit hole.

Give me a power stance bro.

the NFL model ensures that prospective players need to get through College before being drafted. There are no teenagers in the NFL, although sometimes players of exceptional skill get drafted at 20 or 21, yet there are others who don't debut until 25 years of age.

Not to nitpick but.... There is no rule that says you have to go to college to play NFL. You have to be three years removed from high school. I have zero college but have been removed from high school for a long time now, I can enter the NFL draft, of course I'm not getting selected. There's kids giving up on college football every year to sign minor league baseball contracts. Most that give up baseball go play college football but there is no rule saying you have to. As long as three years removed from high school they can enter the NFL draft instead .

While teenagers may not play in the NFL they have been drafted before. Amobi Okoye by the Texans a few years back and just this past draft Tremaine Edmunds were drafted at 19. Both first round picks, both graduated high school at 16. I'm willing to say 98% of draft picks are either 21 or 22 when drafted.

As rare as it is for someone to debut at 19 or 20 in the NFL it's just as a rare for someone over 25 to debut. If they are debuting over 25 I guarantee they either
A) played minor league baseball
B) served in military
C) served jail/prison time
D) played in another league because they weren't good enough before

Also not good money? Jarryd Hayne made $312,539 in 2015. That's damn good money here in the States. If I made that every year I'd be visiting the Gold Coast every damn year. I don't know how much the conversion has changed from 2015 to today but today that's $440,576 in Australian dollars. More power to you if that's not good money.

Well, it's a good thing you're not a draft prospect then. I know several former South Australians up here in South East Queensland, Brisbane and Gold Coast both, and none of them plan to leave. That carries about as much weight for draft prospects as your personal preference, which is is three-fifths of f--- all.
