What's even the point of the rookie list? I understood it's use before the rule changes but now? I don't get the difference between Scheer bring on the senior list or rookie list.

it is because draftees go straight onto the senior list meaning spots had to be cleared to allow for us to bring the 4-5 players in

I get that. I'm asking what's the purpose of a rookie list. A couple years ago they had to upgraded to play, now they can play even if their on the rookie list. With the recent rule changes I don't understand the purpose of the rookie list. I understand why Rischitelli, Scheer, Wigg are going on it. Why not just get rid of the damn thing?

Thinking the SA teams will only make a meaningful push to get up the draft order if they can guarantee getting either Luko or Rankine.

As such they may hold off until draft night to see if they can do a trade up with either us, or with Saints if either one of those 2 are still available. I don't believe either SA club will trade up to get Rozee at 4.

As a result if the Suns decide to take both Luko and Rankine then any prearranged deals between Saints and SA clubs evaporateand the only deal for Saints to do (if they want to do a deal) is with the Suns.

4 + 46 for 6 + 24/29

Still gets them either M King or Bailey if that's who their targets are anyway.

We ensure we beat Port to the punch and get all 3 SA kids locked in for the next 10 years

All these deals will need to be locked in prior to the draft as the5 min window leaves no time for negotiation

Has evolved over time. Used to be project players and injury replacements, now the only barrier to a rookie getting a game is how well they are playing.

I think the main difference now would be the draft contracts (minimum length of deal, minimum $).

A rookie pick would get a 1 year deal, a main draft pick would get 2 years.
Different base salaries.

So a lot less commitment to a rookie than a main list player. And you can only be a rookie for 3 years.

Suspect they will keep it for a while for that reason. Take a flyer on someone, if they don't pan out (like Josh Glenn) can move on more quickly.

But also pretty sure that you can pay more than the minimum if you rookie someone. eg Barlow last year, Rischa et al this year.

Have to have multiple deals locked in for multiple scenarios with multiple clubs, all the while not showing your draft handand - a lot of cloke and dagger misdirection - should be fun

So what’s that mean for list spots now lol. Sorry I know it’s been posted a couple of times.
Do we go in with 5? One spot for dfa?
Going in 5 with possible 6 if somebody bid on Koenan before ND Draft end . I think GC are pretty confident nobody would pick Wigg and Sheer up in rookie draft .

It's actually nonsensical in the truest sense if the word - veterans go on the rookie list, and rookies go straight on the senior list???

AFL need to change the name to a supplementary list

From my maths the 3 special assistance players are on the senior list and we go into draft with 5 senior list spots and 3 rookie spots.

Only 2 Rookie spot , if Holman remain Rookie .
Holman
Risca
Wigg
Sheer .

Yep they will draft 5 top end kids with those picks inside 30 and pick 80 used for macpherson.

By my reckoning if a bid comes on koenan or graham we will not be able to match, I suspect we will look to rookie those 2. Nor will we pick up a DFA.

I think the club has done well given the circumstances.

Hey Premier-how about changing those Lions colours to Suns colours in your profile?

More than likely now that GC nominate Graham and Koenan as Academy Rookie (A/B) soon . Not too bad consider it take Leslie quite sometime to mature as KPP .

Disappointed with the delisting of Jesse Lonergan, but his body has let him down and the club has taken a dramatic hard line on contracts. Would I rather keep Lonergan than Lemmens or Schoenfeld? Hell yes. Should Wigg have been punted altogether? Yes, but the re-rookie option to clear up roster spots should suffice, even if it means we will have between 9 and 12 players out of 49 who have zero AFL games. That's also the last of the Tasmanians gone, unless you count Lachie Weller.

The club is still lazy/tardy about updating its list on the website, though whether that is deliberate or negligent is unclear. This is the best summation I can come up with although with no precedent there are still more questions. Can Scheer be put on Category B given his original Academy status? Are the State Level recruits on the Senior List or Rookie List?
Or perhaps only 1 or 2? The only thing that is clear is that we have to fill 8 spots at the Draft.

Not liking Scheer being thrown into the open market.
Theres been a few cases of opposition clubs picking up players who had been promised to be redrafted.

Lachie henderson for one.

Really under the impression Scheer was going to unleash the shackles this year hate to see him in opposition colours

Craig Cameron is showing that he has no attachment to Scott Clayton selections. Lonergan and Kolodjashnij were first round picks and he's virtually flushed them down the toilet.

Not surprised by Wigg, although I'd rather re-rookie Lonergan (who may have requested to test the market). In the wash up Cameron has had to decide who to delist out of Leslie, Wigg, Scheer and Lonners, with Wigg and Scheer being the least risky to expose. Leslie would not have made it to the Rookie Draft given 17 clubs are all desperate for height and KPPs.

The Lions re-rookie players just about every year and the Suns have done it before too. There is a kind of etiquette or unspoken mutual respect for players named to be re-rookied. I doubt there will be any interference.

Don't worry other team won't pick up Sheer , is not like they got unlimited list spot for two years contract .

I feel exactly the same way. Scheer shown some real promise, will come into next season fitter and stronger, with our inevitable injuries he should give himself a real chance to play more consistent senior footy.

Not to mention what it does to the players perception of the club (that he's grown up attached to since moving to Queensland when he was 13). Surely he'd have to be considering the likelihood of him having a new contract at the end of next year, not often a guy goes from senior list, down to rookie list and makes it back onto the same senior list again.

I wonder if there's any attraction to coming back to WA - probably knows Brayden Ainsworth at the eagles given they are from the same town of only 10K population, and only 3 months difference age wise.
Then given where Freo are in their list build he might be an attractive option? - especially if they can get him at rookie draft prices
Maybe even Brisbane, was a Brisbane fan growing up, stays in Queensland.

Though to be fair where each of them are at with list build Id suggest Freo is probably the only one at all likely to look at him - not much demand for a guy getting delisted at the second worst team in the comp

Scheer will be picked before Wigg at the Rookie Draft by us, yeah??
So he will be picked at number 2. Not a drama.
Nothing to see here. Move on people.
Might be wrong but my understanding is he might not get to the draft...
From my reading given he was delisted, he's now a delisted free agent and can move clubs (hence why his opinion of GCFC is important) during the delisted free agent periods.
Same as how we could sign for example a Dan Menzel without having to go to the draft
The key dates for delisted free agents are as follows:
  • Wednesday, 31 October 2pm: List Lodgement (1)
  • Thursday, 1 November: AFL delisted player free agency period (1) starts
  • Thursday, 8 November: AFL delisted player free agency period (1) closes
  • Saturday, 10 November: AFL delisted player free agency period (2) starts
  • Friday, 16 November 5pm: AFL delisted player free agency period (2) closes
  • Friday, 23 November 1.30pm – 2.30pm: AFL delisted player free agency period (3)
  • Tuesday, 27 November 2pm: Final AFL club list lodgement
