Scrimshaw Ainsworth and Brodie were drafted as “mates” in the belief they would all stay. Scrimsook is gone and there was a lot of talk about Brodie as well. Take the best available
I definitely don't subscribe to the 'mates' reasoning at all for the reasons you outlined. You get one that's a sook and it can rub off on the others.
But a really good prospect who wants to live here is a different story and more what I'm talking about. If you spend a bit more I can handle that.

I hope somebody can clear this up, but out of interest why not have a look at how we get the picks to land both of them? I think it is fairly safe to say that O'Halloran will be available at #24, so it leaves #6 and #29 as bargain pieces.

What about #6 and #29 to Adelaide for #13, #16 and #73? The points are slightly in Adelaide's favour so an exchange of future picks would suffice to even that up. Or we get cute and chuck in our #24 for their #21 to put the points in our favour.

The going rate during the trade period in trading of picks was a 50% premium being paid to the team with the higher pick.

I don't know why the crows would want 6 when all the SA talent would most likely be gone but if they did it would be for 8 and 13/16 with maybe 29 going back if there lucky

Keep pick 24,29, if Xavier H and McLennan available at those pick great , if not I believe there are a lot more candidates with equal skillset willing to go anyway just to be on AFL list.

Saints list manager saying they want a mid or speedy small forward who can pressure.
Caldwell put to him and said he’s someone they haven’t ruled out.
If we went Luko & Rozee then they are odds on to take Rankine at 4 though. Crows and Port need to trade up or they’re left with flight risks like the Kings and Smith.

I would still look at Murdoch and Sutcliffe. Possibly Weller if he doesn't mind riding the rookie list. Murdoch fills our need for outside run, Sutcliffe has that flexibility Dew loves as a lock down small defender which we lack and can rotate through the guts when required and Weller for a bigger experienced body for the NEAFL and has AFL experience if called upon.

Whitecross would be another one for leadership and flexibility as well.

I don't think that was the case.

In the Brisbane/Gold Coast pick swap there was a 30% premium, but then the Lions came back with a lucrative deal of their own that leaves us with the loss of future 2nd and 3rd round picks at worst and pick #1 in 2019 at best.

The Freo/Port pick swap was also about 30% to go from pick #11 to pick #6. Port valued #6 at the price of pick #1, so at those odds #8, #13 and #21 from Adelaide is worth #6 and #29. Expensive price to jump 2 spots.

If GWS wanted #6 I'd give it to them for any 2 of their 1st round picks, but they also have some later picks to make the deal mutually beneficial. Maybe #9, #19 and #25 for our #6 and #29.

I am really struggling as an adult male that has lived in various isolated places around Australia to continually read in these AFL forums that we should get this guy or bring these guys in together blah blah blah not because he’s the best available but because he’s from SA, or because they are mates, or because they went to school together or because he has family here

FFS we aren’t the Kabul Suns we are the Gold Coast Suns.
Our draft picks are our compensation and equalisation chance to make up for being crap and for suffering.

You do not hear this thing said in other sports that have drafts.

I’m wondering whether AFL people are the softest people in the world.

Pick the best available-I’m sick of being shit.

I think they are.

To be fair, the Titans have also had their fair share of players breaking contract and wanting to go home/stay where they were previously - Jamal Idris, Jarryd Hayne, Daly Cherry-Evans, Tyrone Peachey. Even Ash Taylor indicated he plans to go back to Brisbane in the near future.

So I don't think this is just an AFL issue for the Gold Coast.

The obvious thing is to circumvent it. Back in the day, the Brisbane Lions recruited locally as much as possible. They got Mick Voss and brought in his brother Brett. They got ridiculously lucky with Aker and for a while rode the newfound popularity of AFL in Queensland.

They also used strategies to retain players from Victoria. When they recruited Chris Scott, they later bought his twin from Hawthorn when it might have been they other way around. They got Browny through father/son and knew Power was a huge Lions fan.

We employed a bit of that strategy by recruiting Calder boys Wright and Miller together. We also did it with Brodie, Ainsworth and Scrimshaw, but as we were constantly reminded, Scrimsook brought Mummy and Daddy with him and they weren't happy. To be fair, Benny brought his family too, but his hometown more resembled Mordor more than a quaint country Victorian town and even at the best of times the GC beats the crap out of Morwell.

Our ties with PBC are soon to be rivalled by Hermit Park, who produced Jarrod Harbrow, Josh Jenkins, Braydon Preuss, Josh Williams and now Dirk Koenen. These kinds of things are important to the culture of a playing group and they cannot be manufactured.

Josh Williams - anyone heard if he is a rookie chance given the club is banging on about getting some outside run.

That’s a fair call, I’m actually talking about sports like nba, nfl, mlb where there is a draft.
You don’t hear of franchises in those sports being manipulated or worrying about such rubbish.
They just take who’s the best in the needs they need addressed.

Their kids are conditioned to know they will need to travel for college and the pros and that they won't have a great deal of a say in their early pro career - in saying that the $$$ are a lot better and may provide added incentive for these guys to be a bit more resilient.

AFL footballers, especially the Melbourne kids who like the 10/18 odds they will stay with their mummies like their non-footy private school boy prima donna mates, just have this sense of entitlement that they should be able to stay home and be footballers and have now seen a long recent history of piss weak blokes like Scrimshaw forcing their way back home when they can't hack it.

How many list spots do you have available?

Trade picks 6, 24 & 29 to St Kilda for pick 4.

Go do the draft and take:
2. Lukosius
3. Rankine
4. Rozee
Late pick. Academy Player

Then you're done.

That makes sense if you've got seven list spots available.

I've asked this same question and the only firm conclusion I can draw is that Aussies are a bunch of sooks compared to Americans. Even non-athletes in America move everywhere for university, unlike half of Aussie students.
