Hawthorn is falling behind in the chase for out of contract Gold Coast forward Tom Lynch, according to the Herald Sun’s Sam Edmund.

The Hawks, along with Collingwood and Richmond, have been the three clubs reportedly interested in Lynch, and Edmund has updated how the race is going.

“Tom Lynch and Collingwood is the pairing that we keep hearing over and over again,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“Hawthorn, apparently, he is not interested in Hawthorn.”

Edmund also says Jake Lloyd, who is out of contract at the end of the season, is facing some financial barriers at Sydney.

“Jake Lloyd, unhappy up at the Swans with a contract offer that has been made his way,” he said.
“He wants some more and a new offer is not great either.”

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon says the Swans offered Lloyd “thin sheets”.

Defender Nic Newman is also “unhappy” at the Swans, according to Edmund.

Lloyd and Newman would be a good start.

Couple of B grade signings but that's just what we need they're as tough as nails.

Look at what North did with Marley Williams, Billy Hartung, Ben Jacobs etc they brought in fringe players from other clubs who are now stepping up big time.

Isn’t that what Stewart Dew was meant to bring?
Requires more than 1 person to drive change. Bringing in more players with strong leadership qualities and players who have known strong culture will speed up what dew, evans and co are trying to bring.

Will discuss the suns leadership on the GCSUNSCAST but if lynch leaves our 1 and only captain May is out of contract next year and this will happen all over again. So behind May who have we got? Swallow is not a vocal leader, is touk too young? Im scrapping the barrell to find any others at the club.

I know he's still a kid and needs another 2 years minimum under his belt but Ben Ainsworth looks purpose built for a leadership spot. Loved what he showed last week.

Exciting prospect and Future captain for sure, he just needs to learn to control his temper and keep his head in the game. Other elite mids cop tags every game and don't lose their cool.

Yep agree , I can’t see us recruiting in A graders unless we pay them a fortune , out A graders are going to come from the draft , but like the Swans we need to to surround them with solid players like those two , get it done Cameron , he did well with the Fiorini and Ballard signing.

I think Ainsworth is a future captain but at 20 or 21 we could ruin him like Melb did with Grimes and Trengove , only player to succeed at captain at that age was one Wayne Carey a freak of a player.

Rory Thompson would be my pick.
Either that or Jesse Joyce (assuming its the end of next year, so new captain to take over in 2020 - he'd turn 23 during the 2020 season)
I've always felt defenders make the best captains. less ego or something.

I actually like him having a bit of mongrel. We've been a bit soft over the years and could do with someone that wouldn't take shit.

I'm all for a bit of mongrel as well in fact I love aggression but when it's throwing him off his game and performance that's when it becomes an issue which is what happened last week against the saints they got in his head and made him lose his temper he had to sit on the bench for a cool down when the game was in the balance and we needed him out on the ground having an impact the most.

Yeah I'm with ya. Age and maturity will help with that.

Jesse Joyce hopefully won't be in the team when we improve

Disappointing news on AFL site that Scrimshaw and Brodie could be looking for new homes next year.
This would be a major disaster for the club for the near future.
We lose two players who we thought would take us forward and also highly unlikely to get any where
near the compensation the boys cost us picks 6 and 9.
Nothing positive in this scenario.
Simply another kick in the guts!

Because some idiot journalist writes an article does not mean it's true. You hear rumours about basically every player on GC list including Fiorini before he extended his contract, the latest is Wright. Both are signed until the end of 2020. I can't see GC to let them go under any scenario.

Sam Gilbert eyes potential club switch
St Kilda’s veteran defender Sam Gilbert says he has intentions to play on next year whether or not the Saints offer him a new contract.

“I’ve got aspirations to continue to play. I think I’m good enough to be out there with the boys,” Gilbert told Fox Sports.

“I don’t have a manager and I haven’t spoken to the club yet.

“I’m in no rush. I just like to wait until the end of the year. Then we’ll sit down, have a chat, and I’m sure whatever the decision is it will be mutual.”

The 202-gamer is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year and with the rise of the St Kilda backline, it is looking more unlikely that they will offer Gilbert a new contract.

“Absolutely,” Gilbert said of a potential move.

“I think once you’ve been in the football environment — and growing up it’s something you want to do — you know, I haven’t lost my passion at all.

“It’s something I’d love to continue to do.”

Despite being out of favour with the selection committee, Gilbert believes his experience is invaluable for developing the Saints’ young backline.

“I think it shows that you do need leadership and maturity in the backline. I think I bring that,” the 31-year-old said.

“I haven’t at this stage lost my pace. I’d really like to be part of it and help the young boys develop, whatever roll that is.”

Gilbert also responded to the harsh comments made by his former captain and good friend Nick Riewoldt on the Saints’ poor start to the season.

“I’ve obviously played a lot of football with Roo and he is an incredible leader, incredible bloke and a good friend of mine,” he said.

“That’s his opinion and he’s totally entitled to that.

“I see internally that at every review we have we’re trying to improve.”

The defender believes the club is heading in the right direction after their come-from-behind win against Gold Coast last weekend.

“I think in that last quarter the boys played incredibly well and it showed the blueprint of how we want to play,” Gilbert said.

“If we can match that going into next week’s game I’m sure we’ll be in a position to win, or at least being in the game.”

Would there be any benefit to bringing Sam Gilbert home? He's a GC junior with over 200 AFL games experience and went to PBC High so there are connections there. At this point, I can only see benefit in a similar arrangement to the one we had with Raines when we signed him. Full intention to keep him in the NEAFL for his leadership/experience around the younger guys and possibly set up some coaching situation for him after one year on our list. If we absolutely need it, he can be promoted to our AFL side if we're really short on players.

What do you guys think? He's an unrestricted free agent so it would cost us absolutely nothing to get him.

I like the idea, we need as much experience and leadership as we can get

Carlton are after Scrimshaw. If he wants to go at the end of this season then this is our chance to make a stand. We must demand a top 10 pick for a player we took with pick 7 less than two years ago and still has two years to run on his contract. Carlton have pick 1 at this stage but there's no way we'll get that for Scrima. However, we MUST demand they trade their way into another top 10 pick and send it our way if they really want Scrimshaw. Otherwise we keep him.

Simple.
