I wonder if it isn't beyond the realms of possibility for the Suns to draft 4 or more Academy Players. Could we even consider tapping 8 players from the Suns Academy, 6 in the National Draft and 2 as Category B Rookies? Might require some re-rookied selections, like Lonergan, Schoenfeld. Caleb Graham has been talked about as a first rounder, while I suspect Bailey Scott will cost a Second Rounder (neither Geelong nor North haven't got him highly prioritised). Is Dirk Koenen's stock rising enough to attract a bid in the Draft? Even some 19 yo guys who were overlooked like Brodie Foster, Damien Burke and Riley Dreghorn could be worth consideration. The Allies chose 10 Suns Academy players last year and 4 of them ended up being drafted. Maybe not as many this time, but could this crop have quality over last year's quantity?
I watch the Neafl Canberra match on youtube , they are a few GWS or sydney academy reject who are 19 or 20 years old play really well , i think these players worth at look at lower end pick , if their skill are actually better than GC suns current academy players .

Sam Walsh is currently the early favourite to be number one Draft Pick. Apparently he's a Lions supporter, but I'm seeing Carlton as favourites for the Wooden Spoon and #1 pick.
Thoughts?

Lukosius is the clear #1 - he is being talked about as the best prospect in recent memory. Nick Riewoldt with a great kick.

With Max King out with an ACL, Lukosius is the popular tall pick, but Cal Twomey is predicting Sam Walsh.

Maybe, but 7 of those named by me were a 1/3 of a premiership team and have started off 2018 in similar fashion.
What I meant to say was that they are well-coached players who could become even better in a couple of years, which is how you build a dynasty. Good problem for the Tigers to have, especially if they manage to Trade away unneeded players at a premium and continue to strike gold in the Draft to continue building players. Footscray in 2016 and the Richmond in 2017 were excellent in the VFL, and before that Box Hill Hawks and Geelong were champs while their AFL teams were topping the table.

Sydney have only 4 picks in the Draft and will need to spend one on Nick Blakey, so unless they trade away some players for picks they might not have enough to draft all their best Academy prospects. GWS have 6 picks and will likely target their best Academy players, which has proven a cracking good strategy. You have a good point because their talent pool is generally deeper than our, although the NQ Academy products are definitely starting to improve our stocks.

Would you rookie-list Brandon Jack?

Can we ship off Hall and a 1st rounder to Carlton for Patrick Cripps.

Gee he's a bloody good player
Just a lazy 32 disposals (24 contested) 12 clearances 11 score involvements and 9 tackels

Maybe Tom Lynch for Cripps straight up

AFL Draft Power Rankings:

This guy who started as the Bigfooty draft guru and now writes for ESPN has Lukosius as #1 and Walsh #10 (although he admits that in the last month he would have him a fair bit higher)

Makes for some good reading on a guy who makes it his business to watch draft prospects.

I'm sure that if you put a gun to Cal Twomey and asked him who he thinks will be #1 he would say Lukosius

Better contested game, better skills and more midfield scope imo. Would be a solid citizen in the middle and hasn’t been getting much opportunity at the Swans

He's definitely better than the broken down version of Malceski that turned up at the Suns.

I saw that Newman has been in and out and even with a stack of injuries is still not getting a game this week - Dew as coach could be our ace in the hole if he is someone we want.

The mock drafts at this stage of the year hardly ever end up the same at the end of the year

I think either lions or blues have it
My current wish list for first round pick will be Jackson Hately , Rozee and Rankine . Lukosius will always be a bonus as he is a beautiful kick and can play in the backline as well .

i rather go for mature age that are age below 24 as they got the drive to fight to stay on the list . Gc dont really need his experience and currently had good core players in Lynch, day, Lyons ,Swallow and May .

I've never seen Bailey Scott listed as a first round pick, but Doerre has him at 20. Maybe he just likes dudes named Bailey cos he has 3 of them.
Evidence we could overlook Scott ourselves -
Weaknesses:
-Speed
-Forward pressure
-Tackling

Chris Doerre needs to update his list, although he seems to have a pretty good cross section. The little guys might be over represented and he loves the talls in the Top 10, but until we have an indicative order and the Trade period is done, speculation on the number one pick is futile.

I hope GC don't end up having No 1 pick to be honest .

I hope we win as many games as possible but end up finishing equal on points with 5 other teams and have the worst percentage = most wins possible for best pick

A pick around 4-5 would be fine with me

Rankine and either of those 2 would be a perfect fit for Suns

Lukosius is a pipe dream if you don't have the #1 pick

My definitive list of who I barrack for each week to lose in terms of Suns draft picks are (for various reasons are):

Have their picks

Eagles
Bombers
Cats

Are going finish below us anyway (0-6) so don't want any other teams losing to them

Blues
Lions

Top-mid table teams that I want to win to keep Eagles down the ladder

Hawks
Port
Pies
Giants
Tigers
Demons
Dockers

Swans have a highly rated Academy kid - higher they finish up the ladder the more likely they will want to trade back, maybe to us

Swans

If Sloane leaves will get FA pick after their 1st rd pick - want both those picks to be after our Eagles pick

Crows

Teams I want to win each week so that they just finish above us so that GC get the best possible pick (picks multiple if Lynch leaves)

Kangaroos
Bulldogs
Saints

Haha magnificent, all this and the NBA playoffs are the most interesting they have ever been!

I honestly don't believe the Suns will get better through the Draft at this stage unless the focus is on Academy players. Bailey Scott is the highest rated Suns Academy player, but there has also been talk of Caleb Graham moving up the boards of several talent scouts, while Dirk Koenen has been the most consistent player of this campaign. These guys could/should end up taking 3 of our 7 draft picks, so we might only have 4 picks remaining for the national pool. In fact, if the Academy produces 5 Draft worthy players, we probably only want one other player. Then the question becomes how active are we looking to get in the Trade market and whether we go for a big name with the left over Gaz money or stick with the strategy of finding under-appreciated talent like Lyons and Witts.

OK - Let's play a game of the QLD/Academy players on the Suns list vs non-academy players - guess which team would win by 30 goals

All for taking academy players to fill in the bottom half of the list to avoid the go home factor of the less talented players, but if you get a chance to get top 30 talent in a touted super draft you grab as much of that as you can possibly get your hands on, as unfortunately you need the cattle to win AFL games, and in general the best talent comes from down south ATM.

I agree that the academy players you mention should get 3 of the 6/7 spots but more like the last 3 spots in our draft selections.
