Could use a late pick on Connor Thar ball magnet for the Western Jets averaging 28 touches, 6 tackles, 6 marks a game and uses it well. Plays on ball and can kick goals as well. Didn't get selected for Vic Metro but is currently dominating in the TAC Cup

OK - Let's play a game of the QLD/Academy players on the Suns list vs non-academy players - guess which team would win by 30 goals

All for taking academy players to fill in the bottom half of the list to avoid the go home factor of the less talented players, but if you get a chance to get top 30 talent in a touted super draft you grab as much of that as you can possibly get your hands on, as unfortunately you need the cattle to win AFL games, and in general the best talent comes from down south ATM.

I agree that the academy players you mention should get 3 of the 6/7 spots but more like the last 3 spots in our draft selections.
It depends how you classify players. Rory Thompson and Steven May could be considered Academy players because they were zone selections, while Jarrod Harbrow would be in the Suns Academy zone if he was 18. Joyce, Bowes and Spencer played in the Senior 22 last night, so your non-QLD backline isn't going to look very good without a single first teamer. Does Weller count as an Academy player? I'll take Sexton too, with Crossley, Dawson, Heron and Nutting and I've suddenly got half a team worthy of Senior selection. Add in Bailey Scott, Caleb Graham and Dirk Koenen plus the NEAFL Academy players and I don't think you'd have 22 healthy players to compete.

I'm not saying we should waste picks on Academy players, I'm saying we should nominate them and let the market decide. Bowes lasted until pick #10 in 2016 before Sydney tried to pinch him and we were able to match them. Crossley, Nutting, Heron and Dawson lasted much longer and were taken very cheaply. I hope you are right and the 2018 Academy crop slides to the 3rd round, but I don't think they will because 4 or possibly more of them will be playing in their 2nd National Championships. If Caleb Graham or Bailey Scott gets an offer in the 1st Round, as some are predicting, we need to match it. Our 4 picks in the first 2 rounds place us pretty well to go and get some choice talent, but the benefits of investing in local players is 3-fold: demonstrate to the local community the club's commitment to local junior players; no go-home factor;and, possibly the biggest advantage, Academy players are already in the system at NEAFL level and typically play Senior footy before non-Academy draftees.

From what I'm reading I don't think we will have to worry about getting a bid on our players in the 1st rd - not that they are not good players but there others just rated higher. The bombers 2nd rd pick could be around where a Scott bid may come

Agreed - if anywhere close to even 40/60 in favor of the academy kid, get the academy kid for all the reasons you stated

Spot on regarding Scott. Even if he gets a bid late in the 1st round, Suns get a 20% discount on him. I think our 2 first round picks are safe, but the National Champs could change a lot. Koenen and Graham are 195cm KPPs which are all the rage these days, while there are 3 clubs who want Scott, who will probably want to picked in the 1st round for the extra cash it represents. Who knows which Suns Academy player could really emerge this year, or maybe we already have him scrubbing around in the NEAFL playing out of position?

Thinking about it I would take the Bombers and Cats pick and try to get into late 1st / really early 2nd rd if the odds are Scott won't get a bid before then - that would make 3 picks in the top 25 before we have to match any academy bids.

This could all be academic if Adam Oxley wants to come back to QLD and we give the Pies all our 1st rd picks because Evans promised him we would make it happen.

I think you are overrated GC academy kids , until they play well for Allies , i don't think any of them worth 1st or 2nd rd rd pick .

Josh Thomas and Adam Oxley have probably run their Victorian campaigns a bit long.

It isn't me that is rating them that high, it is the experts.

Here are some notes from last week. Scott and Graham played for the Allies last year but were too young for the Draft.

Gold Coast:

#10 Bailey Scott – Used his burst of speed through the midfield to effectiveness, but it was tough going as the Suns lost the midfield battle – especially after quarter-time. He found 23 disposals and had five clearances. Expect him to challenge for the Suns’ MVP.

#27 Caleb Graham – Tall Defender who intercepted well during the match and was able to rebound the footy. He took some good marks and was in the handful of best players.

#29 Dirk Koenen – Like Graham, played as a tall defender. He was very good in the air, taking multiple marks whenever the ball came in long from the Tasmanian midfielders. Took eight marks for the match and was the Suns’ best.

The reason I am so keen on the Suns Academy is that there are so many Gold Coast players who aren't playing for the Suns. The Beams brothers and Zorko are part of 13 Queenslanders on the Lions List. The Premiership Lions teams were dominated by Queensland players and Brisbane are trying to get back to that culture of recruiting local boys. The Suns have 11 Queenslanders, with 6 playing last night. It could be something like 15 next year with 10 or more in the Best 22.

They not yet play against WA u18, Sa U18 and Vic and vic country U18 . I am not saying don't get them but those first round /second rd pick prediction are a bit too early . lukosious , Rankine or even jackson Hately already start playing well againsta Men in the SNAFL so a bit different.

Bailey Scott and Caleb Graham played for the Allies in the U18 National Championships last year. So did 6 other current Suns Academy guys. It is pretty common for elite bottom age players to get an early invitation even though they aren't draft eligible.

Is it common for bottom age players to drop down if they play a bad championship this year. Forgarthy and Brander are rate top 5 when they are under age.

As a long time Celtics fan I feel dirty as I will be cheering loudly for Ben and the76ers in this series
Yeah , I did that when they played my Spurs too...
It's when I knew the Suns became my primary team. I would start yelling at the TV when something went against the Suns when they were playing my former favorite team..
I would be like "who am I supporting here?"
Anyway if you want to hear some hero worship for Ben Simmons, you tube Colin Cowherd and Ben Simmons.. he's an NBA analyst who thinks Simmons is a cross between Magic Johnson and Lebron and is revolutionising the game... I do too but i thought i was just bias, Cowherd is American and is completely in awe of Big Ben..

Colin loves the sound of his own voice most of the time. Just dribbles most of the time, when he actually has something informative to say it’s generally interesting

Mitch Wallis should try and get him but i think they will match it, as for Dahlhaus a big NO .
