Wouldn't think so - both are still on the Coast. They have commenced off season programs - along with a big group of others - just a week after returning from a Bali break.

Also they have 2 more years on their contracts. So I wouldn't think they would be going anywhere this season.

I think all of them will be playing in NEAFL with Aspley , Redland or Southport if not picked up by AFL club.

All reports on those 4 from 2016 (scrim, Bowes, Ainsworth and Brodie) has been pretty good as far as wanting to stick around. Think we’ll look back and they’ll be the core group that set us up for the future

The article is 4 weeks old and so far no further details have become available. What we can assume is that the Suns will play all 17 clubs, probably with a home and away format over 2 seasons. There might be 22 games, like the AFL, where the Suns would play the NEAFL academies plus NT and Tasmania twice.

To clarify, the Suns currently do have an U18s team. They play a series of games before the National Championships against the other 5 teams that come under the Allies umbrella. What currently happens is the Suns NEAFL team is so depleted by the time the U18s are done with the Academy series that the best of them go straight into the NEAFL team. In fact, the Suns injury list got so long at one stage and there were so many U18s also injured or tied up with the Allies fixtures that U17s were being called upon to make up the numbers.

If the Suns are to field a senior team, NEAFL team and an U18s team in Round 1, they will need 23 AFL players, the remaining players on the Senior list are automatic selections for the NEAFL side while the U18 team will need to be able to select several U19s players. For obvious reasons, this is going to have to be looked at because the NEAFL team should be selected on form and merit not because the players are AFL listed. If there happened to be a shortage of talls or too many talls in the NEAFL team is that just too bad? How many U18s players will there actually be to choose from? There were 16 x U17s, 17 x U18s and 10 x U19s on the Boys Academy U18s list this year.

Extending the Category B List spots could be an option, where the players have to be from the Academy and they can't play AFL unless officially upgraded. The Suns are going to have to spend a lot more money and recruit a lot more kids to be able to field top-up players to the NEAFL (which is the aspiration of all Academy players), compete in the TAC Cup equivalent competition and still be able to field U17s and U16s sides.

2014 Wright, Miller (and Weller).

With only Day, Swallow, Thompson, May, Nicholls and Harbrow left from the original list, then only a further 9 players remaining from the next 4 drafts, it has been a rebuild by stealth since then.

2015 Ah Chee, Fiorini, Schoenfeld, Macpherson, Joyce, Davis, Willis, Grant, Rosa, Currie
was the beginning of the rebuild. Replacing 5 of these players within this period is significant because that is what they were brought in for - mature bodies occupying the roles until the younger guy could come through.

2016 Ainsworth, Scrimshaw, Brodie, Bowes, Scheer, Hanley, Lyons, Witts, Barlow
If we could have another Draft like this we would be set to compete for premierships within 5 years or less, although the mature players might not be around to see it.

2017 Powell, Ballard, Crossley, Nutting, Holman, Dawson, Heron, Weller, Young,
Wigg, Jaska
This type of strategy might more closely resemble this year, although the Draft position in 2018 is infinitely better. Dew has indicated that 5 players inside the Top 30 is the target, with 8 to 10 list changes overall. There are 4 Rookie spots vacant for players like Holman, Young and Wigg, though at least 1 of them must be and Academy player (or International, but that's unlikely). I predict that there will more likely be 4 high pick, although inside the top 20, with the 5th player to be Bailey Scott if he commits, then some late bid matching for Koenen and Graham (the latter may not attract a bid).

2018 recruitment is crucial to continue this effective rebuild and complete it so that future years will just be a matter of replace and reload instead of continual rebuild. The injury curse, player drain and this year's loss of several experienced players Lynch, Rosa, Barlow, along with Rischitelli likely to be playing NEAFL, means that going after some experienced players is essential in the trade period as the balance of youth and experience is now way out of whack. Mature Age recruits will also be a priority in the Rookie Draft, unless the AFL acts on a proposal to give bottom clubs access to State level mature agers outside of the Draft.

I don't really know what to make of it. Under 19s for sure, but they haven't said that will be the case. As for National Comps, it leaves out WA and SA, which isn't surprising because their junior development is fine. I'm just concerned about where the Suns are finding the players to compete at this level. I won't be surprised that GC using late second Rd or early Third round on mature age like Melbourne in recent years . Really depend on need to choose Academy players or Mature age for two years contract .

I understand the logic of why a player would do this, but it also makes me really hope we don't sign him because of it. All or nothing isn't about being selective over when or if you give your all, it is about fronting for every game you're given unless you literally can't step over the line. My old man used to say to us that he was so keen to get a game as a young man who wasn't overly talented, tall or quick that he would have played at Collingwood 3rds if that was his last option. Would not wipe our butts on a Collingwood jersey, yet would put one on if it was a choice of playing or not.

I thought that was very strange as well. He chose to not represent his current Club in a Grand Final WTF get out there you bum. You are still on the payroll get your ass out there and have a crack. Very odd.

Whilst i can tell you guys that Miles will be a good get and will be great example for the younger players and lead by example as well as making the kids earn their spots ............ He will be a good get

Corey Ellis FMD .......... Why ?? he will be delisted in a years time if not this year, 4 years in the system and still looks like a 17 year old recruit and no muscle definition , Slow and timid.

You can't forever make excuses for long list injuries , surely need to fixed that area (medical and Conditioning department ) or else you are not going anyway in AFL . You also don't want your young player like Budarick playing Tac Cup , Allies and NeAFL and get burn out early before he get drafted. Surely allowing players like Baru at 20 playing Tac Cup will allow Budarick to be managed his game time ( Tac cup) after playing national U18 competition .

He is an introvert and has had his injuries, as i mentioned he has not developed at AFL level but does well at VFL
Lacks speed but has a nice left foot kick (his nickname is silk) just looks timid and not hungry enough to be a top line player
personally i dont rate him highly and think you could do better

The Suns have dabbled in Mature Age selection, most notably Holman in 2017. Jaska was selected in his 2nd draft eligible year, which I would say is another consideration worth bearing in mind because a 19yo is so much closer to senior selection than an 18yo.

Ryan Davis was a left-field mature age pick up by the Suns who probably wouldn't have been given a run by any other club, even though as a man in his 2nd shot at AFL he performed better than he did as a boy drafted by West Coast.

Keegan Brooksby is another mature ager picked up by the Suns who was worth the experiment because he did get games (including one to forget in China) but he wouldn't have gotten them anywhere else in the AFL.

Andrew Raines had already played 123 AFL games before the Suns picked him up after having been delisted by the Lions, but it was yet another case of no other club wanting the guy and he played only 6 miserable games at the Suns.

You like your Mature Aged players, but it is a total crapshoot where maybe 1 in 5 work out and the rest are just an experiment. That's why AFL recruiters are wary of them and only the irresistible cases get a second chance. Unless the AFL gives us some kind of concession, I wouldn't want more than one mature age rookie.
