Much more confident on him after his ‘tomorrows heroes’ feature.

Also our team could use some flair. He definitely provides that
I'm actually the opposite. Seems to be self absorbed and needs a big audience to stoke his ego.
Then there is the nose ring. Oh dear.
I'm thinking Bennell Mark 2.

Never doubt about his skill but if Jack Martin and Callum ah Chee do not extend their contract early and wait until 2019 season end , the domino effect could end badly .( eg 2018 KK, Scrimshaw, May ,Lynch ) could well become( Martin , Callum Ah Chee , Lukosius , Rankine ).
* Hopefully Martin and Ah chee extend their contract soon.

Below is the review from the Herald Sun and Gary Buckenara, and his verdict is opposite to others in the Melbourne media.

IN: Anthony Miles, Corey Ellis, George Horlin-Smith, Jack Hombsch, Sam Collins, Josh Corbett, Chris Burgess, picks 3, 6, 24, 80, Brisbane’s 2019 first-round pick, Richmond’s 2019 third-round pick, Adelaide’s 2019 fourth-round pick

OUT: Tom Lynch, Steven May, Kade Kolodjashnij, Jack Scrimshaw, Aaron Hall, picks 19, 59, 2019 second-round pick, 2019 third-round pick, 2019 fourth-round pick

Draft picks: 2, 3, 6, 24, 29, 80

GARY BUCKENARA SAYS: On paper it looks like a disastrous trade period for the Suns but I don’t see it that way given the high-end picks the club has been able to secure in a really strong draft. Yes, their co-captains in Lynch and May have left but to get pick Nos.3 and 6 for them is great value. The challenge now is to nail the selections and retain players who should be stars for the future. Miles, Ellis, Horlin-Smith, Collins and Hombsch will all walk straight into the best 22 and will no doubt be committed to work as hard as they can to make AFL careers for themselves given they are on their second chance and in the case of Hombsch, his third opportunity. That can only mean good things for the Suns.

GRADE: A-
Buckenara is good he's not tainted with being a Victorian which is a big tick when it comes to any outside Melbourne analysis.

Did you see the story on AFL website about daddy and little Jack.
I actually vomited in my mouth how embarrassingly cringeworthy was that.
Some poor soul on the Hawks board asked him to tell them all about Jack.
I started reading his response on Thursday and fell asleep on Sunday. I’m about 1/3 through it.

If they take Rankine I'll back the club in but if they don't take I will 100% understand the reason why.

The kids we get need to be self motivated professionals who embrace a team and whole of club ethos, and not lazy lime light seeking prima donas

The key word there is "team". We want the best player for our team. I have a feeling that's Rozee, not Rankine. He comes across a a very mature, level-headed young man. I also get the impression, Rozee & Lukosius get along better than either of them do with Rankine.

Like you said though, if they take Rankine I'll also back the club in. They'll be interviewing the boys & their families & doing their best to predict the future. I wish them luck.

I didn't get that at all. I think hes just confident.

Part of the problem with our list is it consists of a bunch of choir boy, nice guy pussies. The team needs a bit of campaigner about it and some swagger. Nice guys finish last.

How long you reckon Rankine stayed if GC draftee him ?
My answer : 1-2 years .

Your or my answer means nothing. You don't pass up on talent like that, you back the club in to keep him. Luke Power hated the idea of moving interstate and ended up being a 250+ game player at the Lions.

Fair enough but l see someone who needs attention which he won't get on the GC .
Just my opinion.

Agree - he wants to be a showmen.

Then anyone hear in the interview the bit were he says if the club can do something for him...

I've also heard interviews where he has spoken about going through the motions early this year, turning up to training late, late night fast food.

Definite red flags in regards to professionalism and being a team player

I hear you but this club will never be successful if we can only facilitate one personality type in a squad of 40+ people. It doesn't work.

Bennell had all that now look how that went.
Ainsworth will be your man for that

Had we not had a drug culture and poor training standards he would have become the exact thing we now lack. Star factor.

We don't have a drug culture any more and we train properly. If we just play it safe with personalities we'll never succeed. The most brilliant athletes in the world know in their mind they are better than everyone else.

If we pass on Rankine watch him become a top 5 player and we'll all rue missing this opportunity.

I understand that but how does that fit into a young list Leadership focused rebuild.
That comes down to the leadership group and coaches finding out what makes him tick to bring the best out of him. Same for any club that drafts him.

Ok I am on Rankine boat now , surely getting Burgess (Same SANFL club) show a bit of intention . Let St Kilda decide on Rozee,Bailey Smith or Max king by putting pick 6,24 on the table for 4,46 ( Pickett ) .

Hi all.
I'm off the opinion that Rankine is the best player in this draft and many 'experts' seem to agree with regard to talent.
If this is the case why doesn't Carlton grab him at pick one?
I'm interested to read an objective opinion which you guys seem to have. Thanks.
Carlton want the best pure midfielder available.

Once we have built a strong club with a decent core of senior leaders it’ll be easier to accommodate different personalities. With a young group like we currently have, it’s more difficult to control. We are in a much wiser position than we were back in 2011, but we cannot afford to make the same mistakes.

Was told Club has put lots of time into him and he is highly rated attitude wise. Values team and others first.
So that's the Clubs view . I'm unconvinced but that's just an opinion.

Also Bennell was shy as hell. This kid knows he's a star and wants to be an entertainment reel. It's awesome and we should celebrate that in AFL not demonise it.

Only problem is how long until his head is turned by Adelaide/Port to go home and light up a showdown in front of 40,000 and his family at Adelaide oval? No way we can ever compete with that if he wants to be an entertainer for the masses.

Rankine has been the guy I want most since the start of the year, and nothing has changed there. In saying that though, at the moment with what has been said, I still feel more comfortable with Rozee at 3, who looks like developing into a gun in his own right. But it's really a no-lose situation (unless we trade out of 3 and miss them both). If we think we can get the most out of Rankine and keep him around and get him to buy into what we are doing then Im all for him. But I don't want to waste the pick for 2-3 years of Rankine before he leaves, while Rozee goes on to become a 10-year rock for his club.

Hard to decide, 2-3 years entertainment vs long term investment .

Do you honestly believe the Sun's leadership group is up to the task? I can see where your coming from with the star power that confident players can bring to a team - I just don't think our club has shown anything close to the leadership required to get the most out of players like that and convince them to stick around.
We should be looking to draft those leaders first
