Does it sit uncomfortably with anyone else that May signed a 5 year deal with a team he knows nothing about then he couldn’t commit for more than 2 years at anytime including when he was Captain.
I wish him the best but I’m tired of us being a football wasteland

These days you are seeing good players sign contracts with their current team that take them to free agency. 2 and 3 year deals fairly common. Then look for a longer term big money final deal, using the leverage of leaving in free agency.

If May and Lynch were playing in Melbourne, probably would have signed similar length deals. Don't think contract length going into FA is the problem. Swallow has done the same, but likely to sign long term before he hits FA.

Suppose GC take Rankine at 3, Max King goes at 4. I asked Port fans about this scenario yesterday and they conclusively said they'd prefer Smith to Rozee (although one reckoned the club would take Rozee even though he personally preferred Smith). I figure two of Smith, Rankine and Rozee should fall into your laps, unless the brains trust pull a swifty and take Caldwell or something.

I would expect a Hail Mary from our previous incompetent team, hopefully this is not the same of the new team

Aye, port keep saying the back themselves to keep victorians and seeing as Rozee is only on the border of the ‘elite 8’ it wouldn’t shock if they took Smith

If you are St Kilda would you take Smith or Rozee at 4 , all of us so far asume St Kilda take Max King at 4 .

Over on the Crows board it’s been stated that the Suns and Crows have an in principle agreement for pick 3. They are speculating they give us 8 and 16. I call BS

If Cameron signs off on that deal he needs to be publicly executed. As the draft gets closer Port will hand over 5 and 11 so why would we even consider making an agreement at this point in time.

Pick 4 possible swap. GC pick 3 ( Rankine or Rozee,)
Adelaide or Port won't sell their farm out for Rozee or Smith . .

GC - 2,3,6,24,29
Adelaide - 8,13,16,21,79 ?
St Kilda - 4,36,46,67
Port - 5,10,15

Possible swap outcome
GC - 2,4,8,16 ,36
Adelaide - 3,21,24,46,67
St Kilda - 6,13,29,73

Assumption GC not taking Rankine at3

Or
GC - 2,3, 4 ,36,46
St Kilda - 6,24,29

Assumption GC taking Lukosius,Rankine and Rozee .
Or
GC 2,3,6,24,29
St Kilda 8,13,16,79
Adelaide 4,36,46,67
Assumption
GC taking Rankine at 3
Or
GC 2,3,6,24,29
Adelaide 8,13,16,21
St Kilda 5,10,46
Port 4, 15,36
Assumption : GC taking Rankine at 3

Does a little bit. The reality is that the Dees will seriously contend for 3-4 of those years whereas we are 3-4 years away from that. He did say his last contract would be long. Will be interesting to watch him and Lynch in the full spotlight.

We had our exodus in 2013. and we're still a year or two away from contending for the top 8.

If for some reason we wanted to move down the order, what do you think of this

Suns give up 2 and 3
Suns get 5, 7, 8 and 10

Crows give up 8 and (trade 13 and 16) for 7
Crows get pick 3 (Lukosious)

Port give up 5 and 10
Port get pick 2 (Rankine)

I think this only works if we know the guys we were taking 2 and 3 are big flight risks and the SA teams are desperate, the draft order then looks like below with us having 5 top 10 picks

1 Walsh Carlton
2 Rankine Port
3 Luko Crows
4 M King Saints
5 Smith Suns
6 Rozee Suns
7 B King Suns
8 Caldwell Suns
9 Clark GWS
10 Hately Suns

Not going to happen I know but that would fast track the rebuild bigtime make it happen Camron or GTFO

You assumption did not include St Kilda trading pick 4 out or picking eirher Smith or Rozee up at 4 if nobody offer them good pick back .what happen to Bulldog pick .

I just love Lions fans thinking they are miles ahead of us. Checking some Lions threads less arrogance from some fans would not hurt.

Living in Brisbane, I watch both teams closely. Lions had unbelievable run with injuries, basically no injuries to best 22 half season then max 2-3. Suns had arguably the worst injury list, started season with 4 best 22 missing and ended up with 9-10 missing. Starting season with 9 away games killed the team. Yet, Lions finished with 5 wins and Suns 4 wins. 2nd QClash Suns were 1 kick away to win it with 9 best 22 missing vs Lions missing 2.

I don't wish it on Lions but let's see how you go if you get comparable injuries next year. I don't see a real depth on Lions list at the moment. The lists regarding young players are comparable. Yes, I love to watch Lions future young stars McCluggage, Rayner, Berry, Witherden, Bailey as they started their careers way better compared to most Suns young players but Fiorini, Bowes, Brodie, Ainsworth have the same potential and should have a big season coming. Hipwood vs Wright I am very comfortable to call it equal. Then there is Ballard, Powell plus 3 top talents this year and 2 next year.

I could go on comparing the rest of list, e.g. Lions 2 best mature players are 30+ (Zorko 30, Martin 32).

Yes, Lynch and May is a big loss but both were mentally spent and played ordinary footy last year couple of years. Thompson was actually Suns best defender and Lynch was healthy only 2 games. The rest of players who left Suns did not want.

Did Lions improved during trade? Did Lions improve their midfield or is it still a weak link? Neale is a fantastic addition but you lost Beams who was Lions best player. Adams, McCarthy - injuries question marks.

The Lions main hope next year is that young stars continue to improve, injuries avoid them again and that a couple of young players playing NEAFL have a break out season. If not you are right there with Suns.

I like the creativity of your picks

Although if we end up with B King we may as well flush that pick down the toilet for a 2nd rd pick in 2020

Traded to Crows for 13 and 16 and then passed onto us with 8 to secure 3
Like your idea.
Don't mind end up with
Bailey Smith ,Rozee ,Caldwell ,Hately , Duursma ,instead of Ben king .
Or Bailey smith , Rozee ,Hately ,Duursma , Jez.

I say we back ourselves to take the best talent. We’re not going to improve if we’re always scared to take the best players.

I also look at Rayner last year. All trade period it was about how he’d slide to pick 3 or 4 because he would want to stay in Victoria and he looks as settled as any draftee i’ve seen. Luko, Rankine and Smith/Rozee are a must imo

Not sure what "tone of voice" you read my post in, but no arrogance on my behalf, nor was I commenting on your list, bad luck with injuries, etc. I made a simple observation that differed somewhat from the post I quoted. Nothing else.

I tend to try and take a realist point of view of my own team and opposition teams, which many fans struggle with because they're almost always looking for hope from their team.

I'm not being condescending, and you obviously know your team better than I do, but I still believe you're team is 5 odd years away from making the 8. It's going to be built on this years and next years drafted kids. With some of your more recent draftees providing the leadership.

I wish the Suns nothing but good luck in a general footballing sense, just not when we play them.

I actually don't mind Either way .
Lukosius , Rankine , Smith /Rozee , Caldwell look good
But hately , Durrsma ,chayce Jones , Liam Stocker , Sam Sturt ,Harrohan are no pushover either .

I didn't think to much of the response either way to be honest. Everyone has different opinions especially when it's a long range forecast. I think the main difference between the Lions 2013 exodus and this year for the suns are the ages of the main players as well as the quality behind them.
While our next men up in those key posts aren't top 3 in their position both are above average. Thompson had a better year then May, probably his best season to date. Wright spent much of the year injured but fit heading into preseason and still early 20's. Our midfield is/has been the problem but there are names there coming through. Fiorini, Weller, Ainsworth, Miller and Bowes. I don't think we are as bad as the media likes to shout at the moment. Could all happen quickly, similar to the Dees after they got their shit together.
