The latest phantom Draft

Bailey Williams at 24 - preparing for life after Nicholls.

I would bet that Williams would wipe the floor with Nicholls from the first practice game.

Looking like Townsend will be getting a 1 year deal at Richmond, Dont believe there has been too much interest from other clubs

One of Koenen and Graham will get a bid by another club in the 2nd part of the draft. The second academy position may come down to McDonald, Gilmore, Simmington, Conroy or Foster
Koenen for sure, but Graham hasn't attracted much attention. Koenen was invited to the National Draft Combine, which means he was nominated by at least 4 AFL clubs. Graham received fewer nominations and only got invited to the QLD combine. The hope would be that Koenen receives a bid in the 3rd or 4th round and Graham goes to the Rookie Draft and gets picked up at #2. We will know by next week whether the Suns plan to make space for both Koenen and Graham on the Senior list.

As for the 3rd Academy in Category B, I agree with you that the Suns have a range of players to consider, but I think you might have overlooked a few and put forward a couple too early. Kwaby Boakye, Emmanuel Baru and Timakoi Bowie have very strong cases for selection - each needs time to develop, Baru and Boakye because they are undersized KPPs or 3rd tall forward or back, Bowie because he's so small. Baru is an excellent shot for goal, booting 16.3 in the NEAFL this year. Bowie is a super pacy little ground ball winner who creates play from nothing and looks exciting every time he touches the ball. And Boakye is really coming on as a defender, capable of playing on bigger men and able to rebound at pace.

Harry Simmington and Brodie Foster deserve consideration, Simmo for his forward marking and Foster for his consistent season in the midfield. However, Lachie McDonald, Ryan Gilmore, and Matthew Conroy all had injury-interrupted seasons and are eligible to remain in the U19 Academy class and play in next year's competition against the Vic Metro and Vic Country junior AFL clubs. Add to that list Fitzroy Greenwool, Matthew Smith and Tui Lowah, who have all been really good this year but just need more time. There's an argument to suggest that the Suns mainly recruit from within when a player is 19 unless they are elite like Weller and Bowes or attract bids. What is the point of listing an 18yo kid to play all year in NEAFL when you can do the same for free and give his spot to a bigger bodied player?

There is a possibility I haven't seen mentioned lately, which is Heron or Dawson getting promoted to Cat A Rookie and the Suns nominating 2 Academy player to the Cat B list. People say the Suns Academy crop is a down year, but it isn't far off with 8 guys selected for the Allies and 30 odd Academy players experienced NEAFL because the Senior list had so many injuries. One thing that wasn't documented - I don't know if you can even publish it actually - was the extent of injuries to our Academy players. Sufficed to say, I am bullish about 3 Suns Academy Players being drafted - we should even put a bid on Bailey earlier than North are comfortable with - and I could see a remote possibility of a 4th in a couple of scenarios.

McLennan is awkwardly placed for us in a few mock drafts this week at 21 & 22.
Get Richmond's #17 pick for #24 and #29 and they can give us a late pick too. Sends a message to McLennan that we are seriously looking at him, but if Adelaide or Port take him first there will still be some very good talent around that wouldn't be there in the mid to late 20s. Richmond have been pretty classy about dealing with us and they go into this Draft knowing they need to fill 6 spots on their roster, but at #17, #37, #64, #68, #74, and #92 they know they will only get 2 decent prospects and the rest will be speculators. Having 3 2nd round pick makes that equation much more attractive.

I think that would be a win / win for both clubs and can see Richmond going for that deal

Last year Tigers traded #15 to Brisbane for #20+#25 and with the good relations in the recent trades im sure an amicable deal would be done

IMO Iva Bigun won suggested swap pick deal with his creativity thinking so far . Handdown .

After watching McLennans tomorrow’s heroes he seems exactly like the type of player we need now that May is gone. Strong intercepting, rebounding defender. That plus interest in coming up makes me think we should package up 24 and 29 to someone like Richmond to guarantee we get him
Absolutely apart from the fact he's a gun, he surfs, skates, calls GC his second home, spends all his holidays here with his cousins in Mermaid.
Are we even having this conversation. This is the kid who will hold his SA buddies here it's a no brainer no brainer.
He was even part schooled in Nepal while his Mother was working as a nurse in the Nepalese mountains
Good Lord get this kid to the GC.

Move up to get our cursed pick #19 back from GWS (WC pick that we flipped to Brisbane for their future 1st and they shuffled to GWS as part of the Neale deal) by trading #24 and #29 while getting back #52.

Or hit Richmond up for pick #17 and #68 for #24 and #29 and hope Adelaide or Port don't like him at #15 or #16.

Or go full Croweater by giving up #3 for #5 and getting Rozee anyway, then take Port's #10 and #15 by giving up #24 and #29. Lukosius, Rozee, Smith, Hately and McLennan

Or go subtle Crow, by trading back #6 to Adelaide for #8 and coming in from #29 to #21
Crows suddenly get hot for Bailey Smith, Suns end up with Lukosius, Rankine, Hately, McLennan and Ely Smith at #24.

If i was the Suns recruiter
#2 - Lukosius
#3 - Rankine
#6 - Rozee , Smith

Must go for the best talent and Rankine will be a Gun player that you just must take
McLennan / Smith would be nice but cant see them being there past #23
The debate isn't about if we want Rozee or not. We do, but Port are going to pick at #5 and they've spent a lot of capital to get there so they are going to want an SA player. So the debate is now which SA kid do we bring in with Lukosius at #3, Rankine or Rozee. The other thing is that if we get Bailey Smith he's going to have clubs like Richmond come sniffing after him by the end of 2020. Vic Metro players have a tendency want to go home - you've got 3 of our foundation players already and 2 are from Vic Metro and the other is Vic country. We need to find a way to get 3 or 4 of these SA kids and make them want to stay for each other, while staying away from Victorian, Tasmanian and Western Australian players.

I think you cannot ignore Rankine , He is just way too good and must take the chance on retaining him

Unfortunately whilst it would be best to get all 3 SA kids its not always possible and if there are doubts as to Smith wanting to go home then there needs to be a call made to trade out that pick for 2 later picks or just trust the suns new management & coaching to at least have a chance

Just have to take the best talent and for me its Lukosius,Rankine and Rozee / Smith
