Don't get me wrong I'm as excited as anyone to load up on kids in this draft, but I don't think a pick around 16 if we finish top 4 again is going to get us 24 and 29 which in terms of points is equal to pick 10 in the draft. So we'd need to throw in our second round pick and/or the Suns 3rd round pick to get them to consider it.

For mine the best avenue to explore is using that Suns 2019 pick which is worth 438 points if they finish last before compo picks are added, plus our 2 R4 picks this year to upgrade into a pick in the 28-33 range, and I reckon the Suns pick 29 would be available if it meant they get their 3rd round pick back for 2019.

With 3 picks inside 40 I reckon we'd be able to snare 3 of Valente O'Halloran Smith Taylor Stocker Foley or Sturt who are all big bodied midfielders or mid/forwards.
I'LL be happy with that result.
But I'm greedy and want more lol

Suns won't have any use for picks in the 4th round, they'll be done well before that
Suns have 4 academy kids who attended the combine who could be drafted they may want points to pick up a couple of these kids who might be late bids.

Will all of them go in the main draft though?
If they end up with 3 early picks for pick 2 or 3 then they may not have room on their list for any later picks

FYI

Tomorrow night I'm chatting to the guys from AFL Draft Central about the upcoming draft.

I'll post the link in here and you can listen in live.

Note: this is a generic draft podcast not Richmond centric.

However If you have Richmond specific questions feel free to send them through on the night via spreaker

Are you sure about that. Pretty sure it was only two..Koenen and Scott. And Scott has nominated North. Unless you are counting the two at the state combine, of which only one (imo) could get a bid.

Our depth players didn't exactly set the world on fire when they got their chance.
Besides Short improved from 2017 that he became a regular in 18.
Who's to say Baker and or Markov might be the short of 19 therefore our depth hasn't take a hit as you say it has.;)
Because short is a half back flanker and surprise surprise, stepped up as a half back flank. Neither baker not markov are genuine midfielders, which is the area where we decided to trade away our depth without replacements.

By my count we have listed 40 players, but 6 are gone.
33 senior players signed, 1 rookie (Baker) and 5 unsigned (Townsend, Chol, Soldo, Drummond and Eggmolesse-Smith)

Towner from all accounts has signed and the rumour on a FB group is that Soldo is going be rookied.

Yet.

  • Our 1st pick should nett a draftee at least as good as Cellis even in his 1st season.
  • We'll pick up either a delisted Free Agent or a State League player at least as capable as Miles on less coin.
  • I'd say the Club expects a couple of players to step up with extra coaching and focus on being a replacement for Conca who we couldn't really keep given what Freo offered. It was an uncontrollable event.
  • Lloyd is the interesting replacement void - I'm guessing the Club thinks it's covered, it's just not as obvious YET! While not even close to like for like, perhaps the arrival of Lynch means Jack fills whatever we looked for in Lloyd in a round about sort of way.
Personally I'm more concerned about a back up Ruck for 2019. 2020 might be OK if CCJ or Miller kicks on a bit, but if we lose Nank somehow, a Top 8 spot might even be hard to hold down. Need a little (or big) back up insurance I reckon.

Player depth means an incoming player can do the same function/role as the player he replaces.

How does Corey Ellis, Sam Lloyd or Anthony Miles fulfil those positions in the midfield?
  • Corey Ellis - needs to find the ball and hit a target.
    • No point standing around and taking up space as a midfielder.
upload_2018-10-21_23-38-58.png
  • Anthony Miles
    • Why did he only play 1 game, might have something to do with a lack of defensive effort
upload_2018-10-21_23-43-10.png
  • Sam Lloyd
    • Is not a midfielder, more as a mid/forward, his problem not enough scoreboard impact. Too many other players vying for the midfield or forward role

Richmond was never going to offer Reece Conca a 3-year deal, it would have been foolish considering his injury history.

The so-called depth (Ellis, Miles & Lloyd) played 12 games between them.

What some people define as depth, others could call them list cloggers!

How many times do you need to be told. We still have midfield depth. Caddy Townsend Higgins Rioli Menadue Markov Naish and Baker are all capable of playing through the midfield. Plus the draftees we will add.

If you're not going to have a panadol maybe have a Bex and a lie down

Not sure about 'is' but does play as a half back flanker...
Same will happen with both baker and markov we keep playing and developing them and surprise, surprise we end up with some genuine players as good as short maybe even better!

Only caddy and Higgins are genuine mids and none could replace someone like prestia or Martin if they are injured. Besides naish hasn't been close to getting a game, baker isn't fit enough yet, menadue and markov are list clogging and Townsend isn't guaranteed to be on the list and was worse than Ellis when playing in the middle.

The point still stands that we have no clearance winning mids outside the top 22 and if someone like Martin or Cochin are injured then every game will be a clearance smashing

Naish was emergancy 3 or 4 times and Dimma said in a press conference that he is the sort of player that suits AFL more than VFL

While I still want Luke Valente to join the club, I'm starting to think he'll be around at our second pick based on updated rankings. The one I would love to fall to 17 is Xavier O'Halloran 187cm 83 kg inside midfielder from Western Jets who captained Vic Metro.

Combine Results:
Equal 7th kicking test
Equal 10th vertical jump
8th 20m sprint
2nd agility test
Equal 5th yo-yo test

Reckon he would be a chance of being in the 22 for round 1 given his size and with a full preseason.
Seen Xavier play 4 times during the year, he has got everything that suits Richmond.....

If Gold Coast won't use picks 24 and 29 in the draft, we could do a pick swap

2019 1st and 2019 2nd for GC 2019 2nd, 24 and 29

2018 17, 24, 29, 37, low 50s
2019 GC 2nd, GC 3rd, 4th, 5th...
There will be very little difference between our 2019 1st round pick and Gold Coast 2nd round pick. The bookies have us as flag favourite and GC as wooden spoon favourite. If it turns out like that it's only 1 spot (before FA compo). So in effect the trade you are proposing is our 2019 2nd rnd for pick 24 & 29. GC will be getting absolutely reamed on that deal.

One pick difference is the best case scenario, so not effectively the same.

If the Gold Coast won't use 24 and 29 because Adelaide or Port offer multiple picks for 2 or 3, then it worth trying to trade future picks to get the 2 second rounders.

Still 5 months until round 1, plenty of time for those mentioned to get fit and improve their ability to play midfield, but you just ignore that and if you keep having fits about the state of the list by round 1 you'll be in a rubber room screaming we've got no mids.

Gold Coast will effectively be taking a punt that they will be doing much better than expected and for us doing a lot worse, when the odds are we both will be somewhere on the opposite sides of the ladder.

Let me put it this way. Why would they take our deal when most other clubs would be able to offer a better deal for those picks?
