Would keep this years 1st and offer up next years too the Suns instead.
17,24,29,37.
#17 - Liam Stocker 183cm, 83kg
#24 - Xavier O'Halloran 186cm, 82cm
#29 - Luke Valente 186cm, 80kg
#37 - Ely Smith 188cm, 86kg
#50 odd - Mitch Grigg 182cm 82kg

Dream draft, great kicks & some great characters. All have size and can play next year.

Devil's advocate. Not necessarily what I think, but for discussion.

Major focus on big bodied mid on here. Our game plan is not based on winning the contested ball. We have to provide a contest and stop easy ball out or else our structure falls apart (see Pies game). So Nank doesn't have to win the tap, justs top the opposition ruck from hitting his man. We don't have to win the contest, we have to stop the ball moving freely if we don't. So what we really need is a mid that can contest the inside ball, but is great at pressure, high footy smarts and can run both ways. As long as they can make the contest it's their ability to shark the ball around the contest, shut down the opposition and break fast that matters. That is a very different player to what this thread I talking about.

I wonder if come draft day people will melt down because we get someone that isn't that monster inside mid. But over time we might look back and say ' they knew what they were doing getting this all round mid that makes our system work better.'

With the knowledge that Towner has signed on, and assuming that Drummond and Chol will be delisted, here are our pick numbers:

Senior departures:
Hampson Griffiths Conca Lloyd C.Ellis Miles Drummond

Rookie departures:
Stengle Chol Moore

Senior additions:
Lynch Moore DRAFT x3-5

Rookie additions:
DRAFT x3-5

Number of picks in each draft depends on whether we want to stick to 40/4 senior/rookie split and whether we want to hold over a rookie spot for the mid season draft
When did Towner sign?

If you remove from the draft the Academy/ Father-son selections and the picks that will be needed for them, I estimate our picks become:
17 33 50 54 59
At 17, Hately, RCD & Caldwell are likely to be gone. O'Halloran, Stocker, Valente more likely to be available - at least 1 should be.
At 33, Jack Bytel or Ely Smith will be 50/50 as to whether they are available or just gone.

Yep that’d be a good outcome considering the strength of this years draft and the number of picks we’ll have this year (doubt very much we’ll have the same turnover next year).

The only slight concern is that trading away next years pick would make it difficult to get any trades done in 2019.Scenario next year could be Grigg and Houli retire and we use that 1st round pick to bring in another player (eg Hopper)

Think we're giving up too much to get a couple of 2nd rounders, as I mentioned earlier, offer up the Suns 2019 pick plus 64 & 68 to try and get a late 20s/early 30s pick and give us 3 picks inside 40.

That way it maintains our first 2 picks in next years draft/trade period which gives us room to move as you never know who might be available. The only way I would be up for trading a future first is if we're getting a genuine star to top off the list.

Looking ahead. Were getting Maurice jr(2020) which may cost us a 1st rnd if we have it.we should be prepared to use that pick on getting a Hopper etc next year trade.Thats what I'd do.

I think it's worth the gamble imo.Remember we loaded up with talks last year which means we knew what was coming this year. For the sake of one pick next year and doubling our chances this year.I think we should explore it.

Whats with the big break inbetween trade week and the draft. It should be right after trade week

It's called life outside footy - kids have Yr12 to cope with too..

Perfect, except swap Grigg for a back up ruck/fwd ?

Don't get me wrong I'm as excited as anyone to load up on kids in this draft, but I don't think a pick around 16 if we finish top 4 again is going to get us 24 and 29 which in terms of points is equal to pick 10 in the draft. So we'd need to throw in our second round pick and/or the Suns 3rd round pick to get them to consider it.

For mine the best avenue to explore is using that Suns 2019 pick which is worth 438 points if they finish last before compo picks are added, plus our 2 R4 picks this year to upgrade into a pick in the 28-33 range, and I reckon the Suns pick 29 would be available if it meant they get their 3rd round pick back for 2019.

With 3 picks inside 40 I reckon we'd be able to snare 3 of Valente O'Halloran Smith Taylor Stocker Foley or Sturt who are all big bodied midfielders or mid/forwards.

After looking at some footage online, I'm hoping we can find a way to get both RCD & Valente
We have a good run of taking SA captains and I really liked what I saw of Valente in the U18 champs

Suns won't have any use for picks in the 4th round, they'll be done well before that
