Depending on how our tall forwards come on (Tabs, Nads, Cox, Dixon, Ape) I would expect us to be in the mix for one of the talls this year. Probably will change a lot between now and November but there are at least 3 top 10 options for the moment plus a few outside. I guess it also depends on our ladder position too. Would expect us to be all over Lukosius if we are low enough.Given the strength of this years draft, I think it’s not unreasonable to expect that Ian Hill will go mid first round.
I see him in the same mould as Walters, and expect him to start his AFL career as a small pressure forward.
Given Walters is 27, Ballas is past his best. We need a pressure small forward.
If Hill is still on the table at our first pick, surely we take him!

I won't be unhappy with Hill3 though. Got wheels, tricks and his kicking is sublime. After watching the champs my likening was a faster, right footed Walters which would be nice.
Depending our pick and clusters of draftees and getting points for Carter it might be better to downgrade our pick. Maybe able to get both Hill and Carter also, OReilly might be available as well.Given the strength of this years draft, I think it’s not unreasonable to expect that Ian Hill will go mid first round.

Love what you said.My assumption is that our pick will be around 5 again. I'm not saying we won't improve, but all clubs pretty much expect to improve and I think we are in the mix of finishing 10-spoon. Realistically I am only expecting us to be getting games and experience into our future best 22 in 2018 with an aim to be competitive and take each game as far as we can. Of course winning is good, and if we are on any kind of upward curve early or mid-year then we should follow that, but it isn't my expectation.
A big issue for us would be any significant injuries. The club would be faced with the option of playing experienced depth (such as Sheridan and Sutcliffe) or asking the question of our developing players (Crowden, North etc). The second option, which is most likely what we all actually want to see, is more likely to lead to finishing in <pick 5 territory rather than mid first round (9). Of course it is too early to assume that we would lose much by preferring the younger players, and those two in particular project as ready to go. But if we are adding them to a side which is already hosting Brayshaw and Cerra, then we are looking very much like a side that could cop beltings again purely because of the lack of development.
If we had pick 5 I am not sure I would take Hill. We are not devoid of KPF options, and we do have Dixon, but we are definitely low on known quality, or indeed any player who seems likely to be considered A grade in that position during their career. Whereas in our midfield and small forward stocks I see options that we may struggle to fit in. In every other area of our side I can name a player or two who is or could realistically push towards becoming an A grade player. Hill may be better than the lot of them, but the potential impact on our sides structure is much smaller than locking in Lukosious/King/King/O'Reily.

If a KPF is best available I think we take them regardless of the performance of the list.I would think that even if McCarthy and Kersten spend all game upfield (whats new?), Apeness kicks 45 goals, Taberner kicks 45 goals, Dixon wins the rising star with 45 goals and the Sandi & Darcy/Meek/Jones duo combine for 30 goals that we would still draft a gun key forward.

It only accounts for 45 points a game, we could finish dead last and have a coleman medalist if the rest of the side don't have their time too.If those players kick that many goals we will be looking at pick 15 or higher.

But I would hope that it meant a top four finish![]()
Fyfe , Walters, Matera, Neale, Mundy and Hill x 2 will also be contributing goals let's hope. If any two of Tabs, Ape or Dixon kick 45 goals then we are a long way to sorting our tall forwards role. I don't think that will happen however and agree we should and probably will look at any decent tall forward available with our first pick.
Saying that kind of thing on this board can see you cast into the realms of being a loony in the eyes of some posters, but I live in hope that this may happen. The man got a two year extension so at the very least that means that he will be getting some game time. There is a shred of hope that I do grip to. It is totally against the odds that a rookie listed KPF succeeds, and Taberner is clearly an imperfect specimen of a KPF at that. But if it does happen, then I expect to hear the "click" all the way over here in Bali.I expect Tabs to have a break out year and possibly get the >40 goals* we are looking for.
GWS and Geelong also had 3 players kick 40+ goals. And Essendon almost did (Fantasia kicked 39). What's common about all those clubs? They all finished top 8. All teams in the top 8 had at least one goal kicker kick 45+ goals. And conversely only one team not in the 8 had a player kick more than 45 goals (the one man show Ben Brown at North). Pretty sure us and the Dogs were the only teams not to have a player kick > 30 goals last season. With all the talk about players kicking over 40 goals. Only 20 players in the League kicked 40 or more goals last season.
The big problem is that our best is McCarthy 25 goals (19 games), Kersten 24 goals (20 games) Walters 22 goals (17 games), Matera* 22 goals (10 games), and Fyfe 17 goals (21 games).
That's only 4 players in the top 100 goals kickers and plus Matera.
Only Adelaide had 3 players 40 plus goals.
If we can get two players 40 plus goals I will be very happy. Getting more than that is a pipe dream.
Did you read Mundy's interview last week? He said he's happy with us kicking only 5 goals in a game if the opposition kick 4 goals. Also Ross is coach so even when we are good again, we are not kicking 110ppg. We will kick 90-95 so more than 2 blokes kicking 40+ is not likely.
Feel like he meant 'I'd rather rather win 5 goals to 4 than lose'Did you read Mundy's interview last week? He said he's happy with us kicking only 5 goals in a game if the opposition kick 4 goals.
Really annoyed me because it seems like they just don't get it. Sometimes opposition teams will get a run on and we'll have to kick a bag to get back in the game. The AFL want high scoring teams to win and I reckon they'll keep meddling until defensive minded footy is dead. I know Mundy was probably over-dramatising it but we need to kill this idea that we are a team that can't score. I feel like it's a mental scar we need to get past.

I am a realistic optimist , So i think we spend another year outside the top 8 , for a run at finals in 19,20,21 and 22Ahhh. Pre season. Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
