Did you read Mundy's interview last week? He said he's happy with us kicking only 5 goals in a game if the opposition kick 4 goals.

Really annoyed me because it seems like they just don't get it. Sometimes opposition teams will get a run on and we'll have to kick a bag to get back in the game. The AFL want high scoring teams to win and I reckon they'll keep meddling until defensive minded footy is dead. I know Mundy was probably over-dramatising it but we need to kill this idea that we are a team that can't score. I feel like it's a mental scar we need to get past.
We got multiple runs of 7 goals I think last year. We also had ~70 pts at 3qtr time more than once and then barely scored in the last. I think that will improve as the squad matures. That shows we can score. Also, I doubt we are going to run into a team of the quality of 2012-2015 Hawks again which is the only reason we don't have a flag as far as I am concerned (and the real reason for the universal Ross hating). I'd also argue we are more talented than our team of the time (overall, but that team had better KPP - Pav).

If Ross can get us to 95ppg, that is plenty enough IMO.

Feel like he meant 'I'd rather rather win 5 goals to 4 than lose'
Yeah I thought this too. Well partially that and partially preparing the fans for the fact that the football won't always be pretty, especially this season.

GWS and Geelong also had 3 players kick 40+ goals. And Essendon almost did (Fantasia kicked 39). What's common about all those clubs? They all finished top 8. All teams in the top 8 had at least one goal kicker kick 45+ goals. And conversely only one team not in the 8 had a player kick more than 45 goals (the one man show Ben Brown at North). Pretty sure us and the Dogs were the only teams not to have a player kick > 30 goals last season.

I don't see where our 45g+ player is going to come from anytime soon? But if all our forwards can improve over the past two seasons (ie a number of them kick 30+) then we'll start seeing something approaching top 8 team scoring potential.
That is a concern for sure.
I might be loopy or crazy as some say, but I seem to be the only person on BF who thinks Tabs will have a break out this year and kick > 40 goals this year... FFS that’s just 2 goals a game...

I’m book marking this post and calling it now... I believe Tabs will have a break out year ! Goals are a given..... err unless he gets injured, but he has been pretty much injury free so far! .... just needs to get a bit more angry in the contests!
I hope your right.

For 30 goals would be fine, just want to stand up against quality backmen.

I think he has about 20 players potentially going top 5... I just hope no one bids on Carter before our first pick. That way we get a young gun plus Carter. [emoji464]

Agreed

Would love to get a KPP with our first.. and carter with our second.

Seems to be some decent KPP available

Really good article this time of the year

He's also got to get a game first. Lyon has previously shown that he's happy to go into a game with no forward line at all rather than pick Tabs. And then point the finger at people other than himself when we score less than 50 points.

He also has a high number of clubs with players who are either Academy, Next Generation or F/S who will all require clubs to have picks available while simultaneously hoping no other clubs bid early. They will be keeping a low profile in terms of bidding on aligned players of any kind. I am tipping most of those players won't be attracting early bids and will be taken for significantly lower than their actual pick value as a result. Even lower than they have in the past. Carter included.

Why would he pick Tabs when we've got Kersten out there.

Hill and Carter would really fill two areas of need in my opinion.
Carter a halfback/wing with elite disposal- breaks the lines.
Hill I see as a small forward/mid - a Walters like for like as Son son nears his late twenties.
Still hold hope we might try and push a F/s ruling to get O’Rielly.

Yes they seem perfect for those roles, but I am not really sure that I would call them areas of need. Crowden and Switkowski could both fit in up forward, and down back we have Tucker, Nyhuis and Duman developing. We also have Brayshaw, Cerra and North who will start their careers in one of those positions I think.

Hill and Carter may be better than any of them, but I wouldn't choose either of them before a gun KPF.

We have this year to assess the boys on the list at present, not sold at on Nyhuis at present - serviceable but need more game time to evaluate.
Locals who fill these positions I would take, especially as they are considered in top 20 considerations, insurance to build a list of local talent - not a priority but worth the consideration.
Agreed on a KPF being a priority but do you take one of the King twins?
I reckon our pick will be around 6-10 ? Who knows, just think that the elite KPFs will be gone in the top 5.
Lukosius will go top 3 you would think.

D_P_S has the following as his top 15..... he has a list of 50 but misses some from WA as he has never seen some of them play.

Certainly the top 10 are very handy players!

Back again and in for another big year of watching games and avoiding family :p

Those King boys are VERY light for their size

The problem will be as soon as they put weight on they will sacrifice the mobility which is what makes them (in conjunction with marking and reading of play) so dominant at their current level.

It would be interesting to know their sprinting speed - are they getting out on leads at the moment more on pure pace or (as I suspect) better judgement of the play and only average pace?

I still reckon bigfooty posters have got it wrong on the Kings being first pick material - listen to everything the professionals are saying about key forwards getting "smaller" to gain more mobility and danger when the ball is on the ground but retain strength (even say see Lyon's latest interview and what he says about Apeness being too tall to play forward only); I can't see them going top 5; more a case of between picks 7 - 20 at this stage.

In fact Ben King who plays more a defender role might go earlier than Max if a club are looking for an elite tall intercept defender, because that ability he has to intercept is likely to be seen to be more valuable than a ruckman / forward (see Buckley playing Moore as a backman).

One thing that stood out with Max is his big pack marks.

Freo traditionally likes the U18 top contested marks as KPP and the top endurance runners as Midfielders.

Dixon, Cox, I could be wrong but maybe even Apeness were the top contested marks of their year...

It’s a long year so let’s see who stands up under the pressure.

Fall back is a likely case of 3 Hill’s are better than 1. Which is what we had 2 years ago!

If RTB doesn’t like 200cm forwards, then apparently Lukosius is apparently a Nick Riewoldt clone... but at 194cm... will he grow a bit more.

I personally think Dixon will turn into a good KPF.. strangely we have a few on the books now just need one to kick on.

Any of McCarthy, Walters, Matera and Bennell are capable of having a + 40 goal season with Some quick ball movement and improved entries into the 50

Fyfe too with more of a forward focus.

Dillon didn’t crack a mention.....

Sssshhhhhhh
