Glad he escaped with a $1,500 fine for the dropping of the knees. Even if it was a bit more clumsy than malicious. Got him in the backside/thigh more than the back.
How that action is considered to draw the same reprimand as Buckley from GWS who deliberately threw his head back into Guelfi’s jaw is beyond me though. Thought that should have been a week, if not two. Horrible look for the game

Judging by the lack of likes I think even my version was too difficult to decipher. Or it was just shit. Probably both.

In a split millisecond, assessed the weight differential between players, rioli being less. Also his knee was smaller than opponents buttock.
The hand pat to the umpires bum, handspand was 1/3 of buttock.
Correct weight interpretation. No ban. Play on.

A Willi touching somebody’s bum is just not on.
Honestly should’ve been a 1 weeker the way the rule is written (not that I agree with that anyway). Was clearly intentional and their excuse was that he wasn’t looking at the umpire so it only deserved “careless”. More a problem with the grading system rather than the action.

Wanted Rioli to get off with just a fine personally, but the reason he's trotted out is grade A BS.
Hopefully it doesn't make Willie go soft!

I never said he didn’t mean it. I reckon half way down he thought better of it hence the immediate acknowledgement that he’d done wrong and the bum tap for Razor. As I say, have seen far more cynical knees being dropped into blokes on the ground than what Willie did on the weekend.

Yeah its a shame really. These events are usually a lot of fun.
The only thing that could brighten the day is bringing back that biomechanics expert to explain how a jaw could spontaneously break itself. Gaff gets off with zero weeks and wins the Brownlow.
And signs for 3 at a reduced rate.
1) Admit guilt and take 100% responsibility
2) Explain he intended to strike Brayshaw's chest, but got him high by accident.
3) Point to treatment off the ball during the game to that point and career good record.
4) Pray for 5, get 8.

Ugh now I have to agree with Damien Barrett, who thinks that the AFL hold some responsibility for not going harder on punches in general. Players are swinging knowing that they'll probably get a fine. Regardless of Gaff's intentions in this particular instance, the system will inevitably lead to a player copping serious injury.
If they want to stop out this sort of thing, they can't just go hard when the outcome is bad. They need to go hard at general out of play actions, regardless of how severe the final impact is.
They need to give bans for things like this:
Ban this unnecessary crap:
Etc etc.
Sure get out ya ban hammer, go hard. Just make sure it stays out more regularly in the future.
If only it was about protecting players; instead of PR, marketing, and lining the coffers of AFL house.
