ESSENDON could be debt-free by the end of the season after another exceptional financial result.

The greatest financial turnaround in AFL history will take another step when the Bombers announce an annual profit likely to replicate last year’s $5.1 million figure.

Two years ago — after announcing a $9.8 million 2016 loss following the club’s supplements saga — the Bombers were more than $10.5 million in debt.

Their debt hovers at around $4 million, which could be cleared totally by year’s end.

This article states that "..in August, Victorians lost $246.2 million on pokies, the second worst single month of losses on record...The Alliance (for Gambling Reform -my words) projects for Victorians to lose around $2.8 billion on poker machines in 2018, another record...AFL (& most other poker venues -my words) poker venues by and large are located where people can least afford to play them...Australians are among the world's biggest per capita losers at gambling".

I assume the above MASSIVE losses quoted are net losses.

IMO, poker machines are a great social evil in Aust. society, & should be completely banned throughout Australia- including in casinos.
I don't approve a unilateral AFL ban -as other sports & organisations would simply benefit with better patronage, & increase their massive profits. Many people are pokie addicts, & lives are being destroyed.
It is disgusting that most pokie venues are in areas with the most economic disadvantage.

WA doesn't have poker machines in the community (ie outside the casino), & its entertainment & sporting industry has not suffered.

I asssume the above MASSIVE losses quoted are net losses.

Why can't the AFL be a leader? Nothing changes if you keep following the others. a queer thing to say.

As seen in the local election in Tassie, Pokie machines are not going away any time soon, especially in NSW.

Soccer has always claimed a large number of junior players but those numbers fall away rapidly after the players get into their late teems when the boys find that Girls,Cars and Booze are more exciting This happens in most sports.

I may or may not have contributed to said result buying overpriced premiership mechandise.

AFL Revenues are listed at just over 9.3 million - my understanding is this is the contractual payments owed for the stand and rental.
That would be for the 2 stands wouldn't it? Didn't the Great Southern Stand 40 year deal include rent for 40 years?
