you are kidding, right?
A bit perplexed by this state of the game crap 360 kept banging on about last night. Who made it so that high scoring equals good footy. People in the meejah who say ‘ we are fans like you....’ I call bulldust on. They are agenda ridden and beat up merchants. The game to me is always able to be improved, but this chicken little crap about the game surviving into the future being in doubt because of congestion is rubbish. Suggesting we reduce numbers to 16 to free it up....what, no one seen AFLW

There is one blight on the game that might be a simple answer for all its ills....get the umpires to umpire to the rules.

Yep.

I've seen some of the best footy I've ever seen the past few years. Some of that footy has been partly ruined by really amatuer umpiring.

Make the umpires professional.

Train them properly.

Give them no reason not to be 100% invested in umpiring their game of footy.

Make them more accountable.

Make their decisions & statistics more transparent (I want a breakdown of FF/FA per team/ground/position on the field/time in the game etc).

Why the AFL can't do this is beyond me. They have the resources to dp this but choose not too. The question has to be asked then. Why? Why don't they want the umpires to be held more accountable?

It's reached the point where I'm pretty convinced the Thompson Geelong team was on the gear now. A team full of previously somewhat average players all of a sudden becomes one of the most dominating teams in the history of the competition. Everyone involved in the Essendon scandal, except for Hird - Thompson, Dank and Dean Robinson were at Geelong at the time. Now we see Thompson is about as dodgy as it gets with significant bikie connections.

Too much smoke I think.

High scoring and free flowing footy doesn’t always equate to good footy. The 2012 GF was arguably the best grand final I’ve seen in terms of intensity and athleticism and skills, but it was a contested game that never went further than a few goals margin either way. I’m glad sides like Hawthorn and Richmond played such amazing footy that the media ate up but did it really amount to good viewing come grand final day?

The same drop kicks in the media whinging about congestion are the ones that whinge about teams getting smashed by 10 goals...a few of them often suggest clogging up the game to stop getting blown out of the water.

Spot on Number 37. If consistency, lucidity, sobriety and not losing his phone in King St fleshpots were key selection criteria, Robinson would not be Chief Football scrawler at the HUN or chief burbler on AFL360.

Spot on in excelsius. One of the braver decisions Jabberer the Hutchy has made in his media career. The bravest of course was his admission that he took himself off for a solo date to a screening of "Sex in the City". To paraphrase Tom Waits, the Jabberer was not weird about the date - he did not tie himself up first.

Nat Fyffe anyone? Disposal lets him down a bit but he is a match turning champ.
Fyfe is probably my fav non Swan. Such a shame he's had a few injuries impacting him right in the prime of his career.

His best is just about the best in the league IMO. I'd take his best over Dangers best, Sloanes best etc etc.

Unlikely. In this article from 2015, Cam Mooney is quoted as saying that they were given supplements - powders, etc - like most clubs, but never injections. Geelong did obtain Actovegin from a company connected with Dank to treat soft-tissue injuries in 2009 (most notably, Max Rooke's hamstring), but this was approved by ASADA and WADA:

Uhh two years before that Geelong side won their first flag, and six years after they won their last flag, they very nearly knocked us out of the finals in that memorable semi-final. So the writing was on the wall that they were going to be a good side, potentially a flag-winning side. I also don't know where you get the idea of them being average players. They had two all-time greats in Ablett and Scarlett, plus other greats of their generation like Enright, Bartel, Stevie J, Chapman, Harley, Ling, Selwood. IMO They're the best team of the last twenty years behind Brisbane so that's a bit of a nonsense allegation in my eyes

I stopped watching Fox Footy talking head shows last year and doesn't seem like I have missed anything worthwhile. Too much drivel and non-stories produced to fill airtime.

Too much Robbo and not enough Whateley as far as I'm concerned. The gap between the two in terms of professionalism, credibility and general on-screen charisma is just far too wide for the show to function the way it wants itself to.

I watch 360 every now and then as a guilty pleasure. The human mockumentary Robinson is to journalism as Spinal Tap was to heavy metal music. Robinson's burbling slurmons are something to behold.

I think what's gone unmentioned in the whole 'footy is ugly' conversation the flogs in the media are having is that there just hasn't been many good match-ups yet this season. This weekend just gone we had:

Bulldogs (average) vs Carlton (crap)
Geelong (average) vs Sydney (good)
Norf (average) vs Port (good)
GWS (good) vs Brisbane (crap)
Hawthorn (good) vs Saints (crap)
Adelaide (good) vs Suns (average)
Essendon (crap) vs Melbourne (average)
Collingwood (average) vs Richmond (great)
Freo (average) vs West Coast (good)

The top sides probably haven't hit their straps yet (with the exception of Richmond) and usually don't until about a third of the way through the season, when the top 4/6 really separate themselves as contenders from the rest of the comp. The only combinations that make good footy is great vs great, great vs good, or an average-or-crap playing out of their skins. The latter rarely happens, so we're relying on the best sides to play each other to produce the best footy. I suspect we'll start seeing that once those teams come into their best form and start facing off against each other. Til then I wish they'd shut up complaining that a weekend which featured no game with two good teams wasn't exciting to watch. Duh

Some good points above. Yes there were some ordinary matches or mis-matches. The three interesting matches were ours v the Cats, the "Direby" in Perth and Tigers v Pies (if only because the latter lost).
And all three of them were raved about. Funny that, six sides all going well combined for the more entertaining matches.

I found this Age article from February regarding AFL funding for clubs.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl...iants-and-brisbane-lions-20180207-p4yzmd.html

Plenty Vic clubs getting assistance to artificially survive in this 'competition' & those that don't get as much as some are getting their funding from pokie revenue which also aids their artificial survival.
Does this also make them plastic franchises that only survive as they are the afl’s love children?
