Yeah AFLX is rubbish and it doesn’t matter BUT I didn’t like what I saw when we played the Ugly Ducks. We should have been more competitive.
What’s next for us? An Internal Trial or a Proper Trial match against another club.

Perhaps, but until now we've have nothing else to go by. Day didn't just flash potential, I thought he showed intent and passion to be back on the footy field, setting up goals aplenty and playing an unselfish team role. Next to that, it was Bowes who was the stand out improver, whose been in the gym with Scheer all off season by the looks.
I really enjoyed watching that first game because the players were in it for each other from the get go, beating opponents withs strong running and spreading the ball accurately to break down the defence. The Dogs did field an inexperienced side, but they had a few guys from their VFL GF win in 2016 and the remainder of the squad were the draftees brought into the club since to replace their retirees and delisted players. Looking at the Bulldogs recruitment and list management during and after their flag win, they've had to rely on scraps and low picks to fill out their roster.
Sydney, on the other hand, have depth and experience in their list that is enviable. They chose NEAFL veterans and fringe AFL players that have gained experience through the Swans injury crises last year. It wasn't a coincidence that guys like Rampe, Hewett, Towers, Cunningham and Newman were selected - they were among the Swans poorest players in the semifinal loss to Geelong. As in last year's NEAFL GF, the Swans side was quite diminished by the time the decider came around and the Lions capitalised.

And the contract extension is about maintaining experience and potential at the $80,000 end of the spectrum
People seem to equate every contract with a Lynch/Ablett type experience

I look at it more from the perspective of how many list spots are going to be needed at the end of the year to accommodate the players we a are bringing in.

E.g. say we have 2 1st rd picks + 3 kids drafted (incl. academy) + 2 veterans traded in = 7 list spots (not even allowing for any rookie upgrades)

Now go through our list and pick out the bottom 7 players that you would think would need to make way at the end of the year (at this stage). To my mind Lemmens would be in the gun and Schoenfeld would be touch and go.

It was OK to carry Shaw, Russell, McKenzie on the list with their 2/3 year contracts when 15 blokes needed to be delisted but IMO with all the young players on the list they need to be a bit more careful with offering multi-year contracts to the bottom 10 players on the list.

I was sort of happy we didn't win the Swans game as I'm content to keep under the radar for now and don't want there to be any reason for the players to get ahead of ourselves (still remember on Barlow's podcast when he and May thought we were going to 'surprise' the competition).

In saying that at the end of the Bulldogs game I was in a warm embrace with my 6 yo son fist pumping the air. I think it's ok for me to get a little ahead of myself :cool:

What I liked most of all was the fact that there are so many players who weren't in the AFLX squad that are first choice selections. The depth is incredible! For example, if Dew goes with the starting back 6 for the majority of last season - Joyce, Leslie, Harbrow, KK, May, Hanley - there will be still be Scrimshaw, Wigg, Holman, Lemmens, Thompson, Spencer to choose from in the NEAFL.
Last season we finished with Keegan Brooksby and Jack Martin as tall forwards with Lynch out and 2MP playing on the ball, whereas this year we've got Day back and Crossley on the Senior List, so our tall playing stocks are well covered (which was twice exposed against Port Adelaide in 2017 when they were too strong and way too tall).

Too soon. In every way. Game is 2 weeks away. They will wanna build things up until June for the return to Metricon with a sell out crowd. Cats wouldn't want to risk him in Townsville in case a Suns player took him out. And it's too soon for him to be playing in the pre-season. He's like a porsche that you don't need to test drive to know what it can do.

Thanks 17er I actually thought we were playing next Sunday not the following one. I stand corrected.
I see we have an Intra-Club at Bond Uni next Friday night.
 
We'll know more about Schoenfeld by the end of 2018, but I'm expecting Dew's gameplan to suit him. I think Dew will prioritise tackling & running hard both offensively & defensively. AFLX didn't give a lot of opportunities for anyone to tackle, but I think Schoenfeld has as much potential as anyone on our list to run hard both ways. He's also a good size to take a few marks.

Bowes just has the potential to be the class our midfield is missing. We have a lot of workhorses but no class. I hope he starts to put it together this year

JJ as in Joyce? Or Jaska? I'm assuming Joyce which is nice. I've been super impressed with him ever since we drafted him. Anything on how Jaska looks?

Bowes sure did bulk up. Had a very nice goal and a damn good mark. Bowes is going to have a big big year.

Slighty off topic but gee we have a lot of players starting with the letter J.
4 Jacks, 2 Jacobs, 3 Jarrod/Jarryds, 2 Jesses and 2 Joshs.

Very interesting. The way Bowes was playing actually reminded me a little of Jack Martin when he's up and about. If Bowes, Martin and Weller all have a big year then the Suns could really jump up the ladder because all three are capable of playing through the midfield and are classy with the ball in hand.

It must be super exciting for the club to have academy graduates showing noticeable improvement because it should be far easier to hang on to them in the future. Back in the day, Brisbane had a surge of talented locals come through their developmental systems in the 80s/90s and the end result was Michael Voss, Jason Akermanis, Mal Michael, Clark Keating and Marcus Ashcroft. Clearly those guys were very influential during their premiership years and it would be immensely exciting to see the Suns do the same thing with guys like Bowes, Joyce, Weller, Crossley, Scott etc. I feel a team made up of local superstars would translate well with the public when it comes to taking ownership of the club.

Well he’s a big framed young man and he’s not really bulked up over the Summer.
I don’t know whether that’s planned or not but I’d have thought he could put on a heap of bulk easily over the off season and he’s still a string bean.

He does look bigger. Not really string bean. Last year he was already according to Suns 193cm/84kg. I bet he is now 87-88kg. We will see on Fri.
