I mentioned in here a few weeks ago that I was concerned about Scrimshaw’s lack of development this summer......now I’m a little bit more concerned.
I could be wrong, but I take it as a sign that he is being closely developed so that he can hone his craft as a defender and get invaluable experience at different positions so that when he is called up to AFL level he won't be as overwhelmed. From limited opportunities last season he showed glimpses of his potential, accurate disposal and clean marking being the standouts. He is yet to dob a goal or sing the song, unlike the Brodie and Scheer who had better chances but didn't necessarily do better with them. He's listed at 84kg, which for his height is still skinny, considering his player comparison is Bontempelli who is 93kg.

He's currently behind May, Thompson, Harbrow, KK, Joyce, Leslie and maybe even Spencer. That line gets longer if Weller and Hanley spend time down back. With his ball use, you rate him as a chance to take kick-in duties, but 19 year olds seldom get handed this duty before they truly develop game reading skills. Defenders take a long time to develop, similar to ruckmen and key forwards. Hanley and Harbrow are not young, while it seems that Leslie and Rory will either compete for one spot or play together in May's backline, which the Captain stated a desire to become a unit that would allow him the freedom to roam around like Alex Rance. Kolodjashnij and Joyce are ahead of Scrimshaw at the moment, which is good for the Suns and not ideal for Jack.

Form and injury will open up opportunities for Scrimshaw. Luck could play a part too. Look at Jack Graham at Richmond, overlooked in the early rounds of the 2016 Draft, he fell to Richmond at pick #53 and proceeded to become Richmond's best player in the VFL side. He was called up to debut in round 22 and never looked back, kicking 3 goals and winning the Flag a month later. Kid just turned 20, has never lost an AFL match, owns a premiership medal, kicked 5 goals and hasn't got any behinds. Our Jack played in 4 of the worst drubbings of 2017 and isn't in the top 30 listed players according to his new coach. Let's see if he can't use the 3 years he has to run on his contract to turn things around.

The major difference between the 2 Jacks is that 1 has the body of a hardened 25 yo inside midfielder and the other is a lanky beanpole who needs to add 10 kg while adding an engine

This is my issue with Scrimshaw and why I’m not pleased with his off season. He hasn’t built up at all significantly whereas plenty of others have gone gangbusters.

No doubt. My point is that you can go into any draft and find a nuggety mid, but a rangy Bontempelli type is harder to come by. Bont was drafted at 192cm and 83kg, and now plays at 193cm and 92kg. Scrim is a little behind, at 193cm and now 84kg, so the reported 4kg he's added in Summer needs to be closer to 90kg and his motor needs to be able to keep up. Bont played 16 games in his first season, but he got dropped twice and probably only got to play the last 14 games of the year because of injuries and eventually his form got better.
Scrimshaw is better off in the NEAFL, playing against quality opposition in a squad infinitely better than last year. I'd be surprised if he didn't get some sort of a run in JLT2.

He hasn’t put on 4kg, 2kg is closer to the mark.

A lot of younger players talk about how much weight they lose each training session and the older guys know how to maintain. You have to stop growing before you can really effectively manage your body. Give him time and he'll work it out. If he ends up being a washout, I think Ainsworth, Bowes, Brodie and Scheer will make the 2016 Draft haul worthwhile.

Does not look too bad in this picture. Definitely stronger and bigger than last year. Considering that he had multiple injuries before draft and his body had to be built slowly and from the scratch (according to Rocket) he's probably where he should with his body.

Scrimshaw isn't missing out because of his size.

He is borderline unplayable right now because he has a shocking tank.

He was drafted with one of the worst beep tests you're likely to come across in the AFL. This takes time to improve.

When he was played last year he was constantly bent over and out of gas.

Once he can run out games you will have a very very good player on your hands but right now he is not fit enough to play AFL footy.

Powell just not close to first team or injured? Would have loved to see him in action

Gee, competition for spots in the middle is going to be fierce this pre-season.

By my count there are 10-11 guys in that team who will be looking for minutes in the middle/wing in Fiorini, Miller, Young, Hall, Weller, Lyons, Martin, DMac, Bowes, Brodie and Holman, and maybe add Ainsworth, Hanley, Sexton and Rosa who could all play through there. Plus Swallow and Barlow to come in.

Going to be a few interesting calls come round 1.

Will is doing well but will probably have to wait until next year. Way too skinny, a lot of competition for spots.
Just thought it might be the time of year he will get a game, not much footage of him but he didn't seem scared of contact or bigger bodies to me.
