I too have always believed in Lemmens, it's just not normal to have everyone on his side. There were times in the past that this board was even happy he'd get injured, as it meant he wouldn't be playing.

Lemmens and Hall are in contract years, so if they don't improve they not only face being traded they might instead be delisted and if they are lucky to even make it back into the AFL system it could be at Rookie pay rates. Another reason why this talk of Lynch getting way overpaid is making me feel sick. There are going to 8-10 players out of 44 who will be either traded or cut by year's end, with out of contract guys most likely be tradebait if their seasons are up to expectations.

Nobody in the room when it comes to culling the list will have any attachment to any of the players because they didn't pick them. Last year, I was cynical about Brandon Matera's early season burst of form because I knew we would be getting rid of him to WA, except I had hoped for a 2nd round pick. This year, the cynic in me watches Lemmens play his way into the top 22 and thinks maybe Port will give us a future 2nd rounder for their former junior. Then I think of Hall and how much a desperate club like North might be persuaded to part with their high second rounder.

I don't want to trade Lemmens or even Hall, but how can their salary demands be met if Lynch gets record breaking money.

Richmond gave Norf another belting with their Mosquito brigade of little young inexperienced goal sneaks. It is a brilliant game plan for its simplicity, with Rance repelling every other forward foray, while the experienced Tigers midfield of Dusty, Cotchin, Grigg, Edwards and co playing a game of field position. The midfield didn't dominate on the stats sheet, but it got enough ball into the forward line for the mozzies to do the rest. These kids are as young as ours too and some have only played 5 games, including the GF, but they have so much confidence it isn't funny.

The Suns could easily do the same against Norf Melbin in Round one. The Roos are slow to develop their play and easy to intercept as they labour to build. It seems like they were so absorbed in winning possession at stoppages and trying to keep the pill that when the Tigers shifted in momentum each time they got the ball, the Kangas were just standing around going "not this again".

North are just not going to be competitive this season, unless the perennial Dad joke about the Grand Final being held between Melbourne and Richmond comes true, which means that the Kangas are better than they looked against opponents that were far too classy.

You're probably right about the scale, but it isn't exactly a justification. Ablett worked out well for the Suns in terms of exposure and promotion of the game, but his ludicrous pay cheques didn't do the team much good over 7 seasons. I just can't understand why we need to overpay our own player. Give him a million and let the AFL top up the rest. Give him more and May ends up leaving next year and Wright the year after. Cut bait with the big fish now. If it was NRL I'd release him from his contract and sign 2 good players the next day. If it was NFL I'd trade him as far away as possible to a team that we face only once and even settle for less to get the traitor off my hands.

The hamstring injury suffered by Sean Lemmens during the JLT1 match in Townsville will see the 24-year old complete rehabilitation for 3-4 weeks.

General Manager – Football Operations, Jon Haines said Lemmens had already begun to attack his rehab with a positive outlook.

“Disappointing for Sean, he’s had a terrific pre-season so far,” he told the goldcoastfc.com.auInjury Report.

“I think watching the game everyone would have noticed how good he was tackling and his forward pressure.

“The way he really hunted the opposition was exactly what we’ve been practising.

“In his usual way he’s handled it [the injury] absolutely perfectly and he’s attacking his rehab.

A notable absentee from the SUNS’ JLT match in Townsville was tall-forward Peter Wright, who had sustained a slight injury during training.

“Pete’s just done a slight calf strain, he’s in rehab at the moment,” Haines said.

“All things being equal we see him tracking really well and being available for selection for Round 1.”

Unfortunately, small-forward Callum Ah Chee is also on the injury list but has progressed well throughout his rehab so far.

“Cal’s had a slightly more series hamstring strain – he’s really been attacking his rehabilitation with a really terrific attitude,” Haines said.

“We see him being available at the early part of the AFL season the way he’s tracking at the moment.”

In December 2017 goldcoastfc.com.au reported Harrison Wigg fractured his ankle during a pre-season session, with the recruit commencing the running portion of his rehab in early 2018.

After applying himself commendably during his rehabilition Wigg is expected to be available for selection in the early part of the AFL Season.

“Wigg has been terrific,” Haines said.

“It’s obviously a reasonably serious incident that he experienced.

“He’s tracking as we thought he would be - if it continues the way its going he’ll be available for selection in the early part of the AFL Season as well, which is really pleasing."

A clear positive for SUNS fans during February was witnessing Sam Day return to the field through the AFLX and JLT1 matches.

“It was exciting for SUNS supporters and exciting for everyone involved with Sam, but most importantly it was exciting for Sam,” Haines said.

“There was some nerves there being out of the game for such a long time.

“To kick a goal (in JLT) was fantastic for his confidence and [we’re] expecting Sam to play a really important part throughout the rest of the season.”

The only thing is that 3 of the 4 injured guys are forwards, so the already thin stocks are now stretched. No doubt we can still field an outstanding forward line, it just means that the NEAFL forward line will be thin and stocks can't take too many more hits. Right now with Sexton, Day, Ainsworth, Martin, Lynch, and Young we are looking sweet, but below that its MacPherson, Scheer, Ballard, Powell, and Barlow. Of course, there is always the Richmond manoeuvre of sending in your youngest and most inexperienced runts and winning the premiership!

Spencer and Willis true emergencies - they aren't top 22 material but could replace someone
Rosa is a known commodity, although Weller, Bowes, Swallow, Barlow and Hall need the hitout more to build cohesion in the midfield
Ainsworth didn't impress me last week and there are plenty of others named here who did

I know everyone hates Nicholls and he did have a couple of pretty funny clangers last week - how about dropping a mark going out of bounds on the full and toeing it out of bounds on the full, giving away a free kick that Menzel turned into a goal? However, there really wasn't a clear separation between the two big men since Witts had a lot more time on the ground and didn't do a lot more with his time. Witts disposal efficiency was rubbish and he wasn't exactly dynamic. Not saying we have a rucking contest, but Nicholls deserves another chance to run around with the firsts team and show what he's got. At the very least reminding the AFL that he's fit and firing can't hurt, while having a genuine backup is a luxury a lot of clubs can't afford - Swans and Eagles case in point. As I pointed out, there was also the bizarre passage of play near the interchange gates where Witts, Nicholls and Day linked up impressively for what should have been a score.

Leslie also deserves a chance to play for a starting spot.

The Lions have brought in the tall timber and Luke Hodge - does May get like a special JLT free punch as part of his ambassadorial welcome to Queensland you thug? Makes me wish Lemmens could put some knees in his back, but I guess Holman will just have to tackle him into misery.

Pundits who put the Lions rebuild ahead of the Suns are too impressed with names on paper.

I wouldn't be upset about MacPherson playing round one. I think he is well suited to a pressure forward role and I liked the way he played last week. Likewise for Holman.

Weird though because I think it shows we might finally be moving towards a team based system where depth players can slot in with ease. If we play in the same style as last week on Sunday I'll be feeling very confident of a structured two way running Suns.

To be honest I was like Jesus I have never seen us play so organised and bring that much pressure ever. Makes me think like shit it's actually interesting that we managed to win games at all in the past... the sheer talent of our boys got us through for the odd win it seems.

Seeing Hall run as well defensively as he did offensively was somewhat of a barometer in my opinion. He was the epitome of our inability to run both ways.
