David Swallow says brother Andrew would be a coaching asset to Gold Coast Suns

SUNS midfielder David Swallow remains hopeful of linking up with brother Andrew on the Gold Coast and believes he would be an asset to the AFL club’s coaching ranks.​

Andrew retired after 12 years at North Melbourne after failing to get his requested trade to the Suns earlier this month.

But the former Roo has been in talks about taking up a coaching position on the Gold Coast so he can be closer to younger brother David, 25, and his partner Georgie Homer who are expecting their first child.

David — who consulted with new Suns coach Stuart Dew while the club mulled over whether to recruit Andrew as a player — said he was disappointed not to have the chance to play with his brother but was hopeful he would still make the move to Queensland.

“It was exciting for us both,” Swallow said.

“It didn’t eventuate but that’s fine, that is footy and that is the way it goes sometimes.

“Hopefully he will still be moving up here and doing something in some capacity.

“He was coming up (yesterday) to sort all that out. He has a young family as well so for him to be close to me and Georgia will be great.”

Swallow said Andrew would fit perfectly into the Suns coaching ranks given his contested style of football is the same Dew wants to implement at the Gold Coast.

“Given the way he plays, he could definitely add a bit in the coaching ranks with the contested ball stuff we are doing with Stuey,” Swallow said.

“He has a lot to offer.”

Swallow also has a reputation for his toughness and ability to win his own ball and the respected Sun said Dew’s style would help him continue to develop his game.

“Hopefully I’ll be bale to learn a lot from him and continue to grow my game,” Swallow said.

“I’ll be picking his brain all throughout his time here to get the most out of myself.

“The more blokes we winning their our own footy it will make us a better side.

“On the back of that we will have a lot more team defence that I think will set us up for a good year.”

Swallow and the rest of the Suns senior players had their first training session of the preseason at the club’s Carrara base yesterday.

Michael Barlow — who broke his leg during June’s Round 13 game against Carlton — showed he had no lingering issues from the injury, winning the 2km time trial.

“He is definitely the benchmark for our club in terms of working hard and the way he has come back,” Swallow said.​
 
Just watched the presser with Stewy, Tom and Steve. Tom is already speaking better. I'm probably drawing a long bow but I reckon Stew is excellent at showing people how to be themself. They seemed so in sync with him after such a short time.

Can’t say i share your excitement over the Press Conference because TLynch clearly stated his intentions that he will make 2018 all about himself.
That’s exactly the thing I’m dreading most.
We will be trolled deluxe next year over Lynch on BF if we don’t hit the ground running.

I must be on another planet then. Not sure how to draw that conclusion from that presser. Doesn't come across at all to be someone who likes everything to be about him.

So the club will train out of Bond University for a fair amount of time while the Carrara facilities are unavailable due to the Commonwealth Games. Bond's Sports Centre facilities are pretty impressive so I don't think the club will really struggle in that sense. It was completed last year so the facilities are brand new.

I can't find a suitable picture but the campus also has an Aussie rules field with lights so I doubt the Suns will be missing out anything by setting up base at Bond for a few months over the 2017-18 period. Also, the Bond University women's team has been approved entry into the QWAFL so they should act as a feeder for the Suns AFLW team along with fellow QWAFL team Coolangatta.

I'm taking a different tack here than Mr. Bods. having just listened/watched the video. I think Tom Lynch said exactly what I expected him to say, and at no time did I think his comments reflected a personal agenda. Sure he has to look after himself, as this is HIS life that we're discussing here, not ours, as fans.
He needs to make the decision that best suits him, and at the same time, if that means getting our Suns up to the level we, as fans expect, then I firmly believe that is in his best interests and I believe that is what he will do.
We have a horrendous first half of the year, but I get the feeling, and I don't know why, but I get the feeling, that we will see a positive upside to our Suns.
There just seems to be something different around Metricon this year, probably a lot to do with new personel around the place.
If everyone cracks in as I think they will, then I believe the offer we make to Tom will be accepted....

And of course we're going to be trolled big time on BF over the next year. I wouldn't expect any less. So what. We all know there shouldn't be any teams outside Victoria, so why are you surprised......;););)

he said his priority, and his only priority, was to help the club achieve success

Rocket and Mckenna probably both struggled during post match pressers especially towards the end. I think there is where we will know how Dew handles the pressure

I'm sure he doesn't want it to be all about him, but it probably will be. It is an easy way for media commentators to find some AFL content to talk about.

It did look like Lynchy has had some advice on how to answer the inevitable questions. He said the right things & talked up the team aspect. I know he won't want speculation about his position to distract the team, but that doesn't mean it won't.

I think as fans we would all love for Tom just to sign next week , Tom may even feel the same , but in the time of free agency this game gets played and its a long drawn out process with other suitors coming in offering the world , i'm more than happy for Tom to have a great year and see where it ends up , in the end we have no option.

If Tom signed early then we have clear air and it can for once be all about the footy and not speculation and him being used as an excuse to call us all sorts of mean things.
If he and his manager play the game then it will be a major distraction and will give ammunition to those that want us wiped from the map.
That’s why I don’t want to hear anything like “I’m in no rush” or “I want to see where the club is heading” etc
Give him a great offer and get this out of the way.

He’s signed until the end of next season and unlike others, he’s staying to the end to see his contract out.
If I was him I’d be waiting to see how the team looks before signing. May wanted to see changes and he’s now signed and happy. I’m confident he’ll stay

It’s more than just the money I would say , he has given us 8 years so he has been very loyal and in return we have been a shambles , he might just wanna see the new regime in action before signing , I can’t blame him for delaying , the media slaying of our club will continue until we start winning.

Was bad enough just dealing with Geelong fans in 2017.
Those two clubs are huge, we are going to get swamped.
But yeah when the time comes I’ll be there having a dig.

I'll be happy if lynch signs on before rd16 that gives him time to see the new game plan and our direction as well as returning back to Metricon as the Gold Coast returns to normal after the Gc18.
As far as opposition teams sledging it's something that isn't going to go away regardless of lynch. Collingwood shouldn't be a threat as they won't be able to beat our contract offer for lynch and will likely finish around the same spot we do. Richmond again are out of cash due to the dusty contract fiasco. If lynch leaves it will be because he wants to go and be in Victoria and the sun's have agreed to see him go(likely a very good compensation offer). So when they come here to sledge remind them about how many teeth they're missing and pick 6.
 
Been a bit quiet over the pre-season - has Thurls got any news or is the place still in lockdown?
