The Gordon Coventry award is given at the end of the season to the club’s leading goal kicker.
It’s probably a bit of a historical legacy in this era of team footy, where a F50 tackle is just as likely as a goal to attract a pat on the back from the Senior Coach.
Nevertheless in 2018 it’s a bit of a curiosity for a number of reasons.
Firstly, the pre-season field would have had good moneyb on Elliott, Fasolo, and Moore, with Broomhead and Blair also having been forward line regulars. All those players have played 9 games and kicked 3 goals between them up to this stage of the 2018 season
Instead we have a tight race, including some who you’d have your mind blown (POW!) if you were told pre-season that they’d be Coventry candidates with five H&A rounds yet to play (Oh, and that we’d also be top four )
——
1st, WHE, 17 games, 34 goals
No surprises at all that Elliott is out in front, but of the Will Hoskin variety? WHE’s sticky hands have been mark-kick-goaling with little fuss all season and he’s been as reliable as the Eveready bunny.

2nd JDG, 14 games, 30 goals
After an inauspicious pre-season misadventure some questioned whether DeGoey would ever play for Collingwood again, but play he has in 14 games and kicked 30 goals. He’s 4 goals behind the leader, but he’s played in three fewer games. At the rate that he’s been slapping the ball on the boot and then watching it sail on between the big sticks, he is very much on track to take out the 2018 Coventry.

Equal 3rd, #35, 17 games, 28 goals
Jaidyn Stephenson. LOL. Where did that come from? Pre-season we were arguing amongst ourselves whether he’d get a game this season, and he has now played in all 17 and kicked 28 goals. Folks have been saying that his young stringy body is due for a spell ever since round five, and yet week after week he keeps bouncing off the turf and tapping them through. Worth pointing out that he’s the most inaccurate on this leaderboard having kicked 14 behinds which is quite ... well ... I wonder how that compares with Cloke’s accuracy at this stage in season’s past? Remarkable effort by the 18 year old!
——
Equal 3rd, 17 games, 28 goals
Last year Josh Thomas was on the rookie list and got elevated mid season. At this stage this season he’s played all 17 games and equal third on the Coventry leaderboard on 28 goals and still very much in touch with the leader. He’s surely a strong candidate for goal of the year with that effort above.
——
5th, Big Cox, 15 games, 15 goals
Cox would seem to be well out of contention for the Coventry with 15 goals from his 15 games, but it’d be churlish not to include the bloke who sits in fifth place, who just happened to have picked up a Sherrin for the first time only four years ago. Little known fact, but he’s also valued in our team for his ability to bring the ball to ground
——
6th, Mihocek, 7 games, 14 goals
Stranger things have happened than Brodie Mihocek winning this year’s Coventry, like a 25 year old mature age rookie key position back kicking 14 goals in 7 games up to this stage of his first season of AFL
