Jeez, boys.

Listen to his presser once in a while. When asked if he'd play VFL he said: "not this week".
Also, the AFL website updated only on Tuesday has him as a 'test'.

Surely McCarthy is gone at seasons end if he can't get back on the park extremely shortly, prove his fitness in the VFL & make a statement in the seniors without getting injured again.

Since being drafted in 2011 his season games returns have been: 1, 4, 0, 19, 3 & finally 2 this year

They won't be able to keep Gregson and McCarthy. Worst case they would only keep 1...
Why can't McCarthy get his body rite as his potential is big

I think the club should just about be settling for him playing out some football in the twos this year to assess his prospects of staying on the list. After all, the Bankers will have finals football for him to play this time around. If he can't even manage that, surely he has to be cut.

He should be extremely long odds to play seniors again this year, given how little footy he's played (yet again) and how likely an in-game injury has seemingly become for him as well.

Same goes for Nakia, in my view.

Way too risky to lose them minutes into a final to make their senior inclusion worthwhile from here.

Just found out he is contracted for next year - so now it comes a case of do they try to get him right to have an impact in the VFL finals, or do they put him on ice until the start of pre-season knowing that 2019 will surely be his last chance if he can't get on the park

I get that he is contracted. Injury issues just appear so chronic that I wonder how they can have any strong sense that persevering will be worthwhile.

According to your numbers posted above, at the end of '18, he'll have notched up less than five senior games in five of the six seasons he's been on the list.

For mine, that suggests his body is simply unable to stand up to the rigours of top level footy.

But I agree even another injury breakdown now will likely just see the club put him 'on ice' until the '19 preseason.

And the merry-go-round spins again...

Not sure that he is.
He reportedly re-signed in August 2016 "to 2019" but it's not clear from the video whether it was for 2017 and 2018 ie "until 2019", or for 3 years, ie including 2019.

I'm thinking you are right - the Addy had an article in June which listed McCarthy as out of contract at the end of this year & they have been pretty accurate with their information. One thing that concerns me though is the following quote from an afl.com.au article about the last time McCarthy re-signed with Geelong:

AFL.com.au understands McCarthy's form has earned him a new agreement for 2017, which includes a games-based trigger clause for him to continue with Geelong in 2018.
The parties are believed to have agreed to terms on the deal, with a contract expected to be executed shortly.

I found the same thing in a few different articles but all from prior to his contract being confirmed - nothing from after he signed though. But I'm curious about the idea of a games based trigger clause and just how low that could have been if it was included in his contract for last year as he only played 3 matches, so surely that wouldn't have set it that low.

It’s better than that. This is already his seventh year on Geelong’s list (drafted in 2011).

Could easily be beyond the Hawks game also:

“I did have a little moment in the third quarter, where it just felt like I stretched the groin a little bit and just lost a bit of power for probably the remainder of the game,” Menzel said on K rock over the weekend.

“But it seems as though I’ve just overused or stretched that groin region, so hopefully it’s not going to be anything too bad.

“I feel pretty good today (Saturday), so I don’t imagine it will be anything that will set me back.”

Hopefully it's nothing too serious but considering his history with groin issues you think the club would be conservative because we can't afford to select him and have him only last until 1/4 time

Who would you replace him with Cats 09?
Could you replace him with Crameri who missed 3 games himself?
