A bit slow to start this one up, but as the saying goes, better late than never.

I will amend the OP in due course with a snapshot of the list as well as my thoughts on...

1) Each player on our 2018 list;

2) Our out of contract players and who I don't think will be here in 2019; and

3) Trading & Free Agency. Who might we be in the market for and how are we going to get them?

This is part 1 of this thread and is now closed.

Who was spruiking that he was annoyed with the Gibbs trade and shopping himself around?
Can't remember who that was. I just remember feeling like every thread had become a 'should we trade Murph' debate thread at one stage.

Backs and Forwards. What I am looking for is a starting 6, the next 3-4 (depth), who’s likely retiring / going, and then trade bait (SOS’s chips):

Backs

Starting 6 - Marchbank, Plowman, Weitering, Jones, Docherty, Simpson

Depth - Macreadie, ASOS, Byrne, Williamson, Rowe, O’Shea, Mullett, Schumacher

With Docherty LTI, perhaps Byrne gets first opportunity and Williamson a likely starter on the bench.
Rowe likely gone end of season, ASOS and Simpson might make it for one more season.
Byrne then Jones strike me as possible trade bait.

Forwards

Starting 6 - Charlie, Jack, Casboult, Wright, Pickett, Dow (last one is any midfielder on rotation)

Depth - Harry, Lamb, Garlett, Kerr, TDK, Polson, Lebois (rookie)

Hope to see Harry replace Casboult and Garlett replace Wright.
I see Wright going on to 2019 and Casboult has the 2 year contract.
I see some trade bait potential down the track if Kerr and TDK step up, especially if we say recruit BSOS.

The aim is to find another draft pick or trade to address deficiencies (so ignoring Free Agency for now) which include:

- We have 3 ruckman around 27-28yo in Kreuzer, Lobbe and Phillips, we have Casboult as the forward / ruck, Harry has not really rucked and TDK is starting out.

- The midfield perhaps needs some more class players.

Considering the training reports and media comments it seems Willo is ahead of Byrne.

This time next year Doc moves back into the starting 6, possible retirements (or declines) from Simmo, Rowe and ASOS. Not sure how long O'Shea is contracted for but don't see him as a long term CFC contracted player.

Agree with starting 6. Dow probably on the bench but nonetheless agree in terms of resting mid.
I think Wright may stick around for more than 1 year. I think he's contracted up to this year and it's hard to see them renewing him for only 1 more year. Not to mention he's only just turned 28... he's marginally younger than Ed and Kreuz who don't seem to cop the same age/retirement comments nearly as often. I get the feeling Wright can step it up a bit over the coming couple of years with some better i50 entries and playing purely as a small forward with minimal/negligible mid rotations.

Harry I feel will get there, I'm just a little less confident that it'll be this year that he completely dethrones Levi. I'm hoping he can get fit and stay on the park and play 10-15 games this year. Next year he steps up. Of course there's no complaints from me if he can manage that this year. Will be interesting to see if he can play as the #1 big dog for us and do some relief ruck work.

For ruckman we can probably go after the young-ish 3rd string at a club who wants more action. Think Nankervis; Tigs picked him up for a 3rd or 4th rounder. That doesn't have to happen this year, could be next. It all rides on MKs fitness, we're ok at the moment with Phillips and Lobbe as backups but we'll have to reassess at the end of the season for how all 3 are going.

The question of how we approach the midfield is an interesting one. Do we go all in on a 7 figure or thereabouts FA? Do we try and pick up some handy role players like an AA squad level specialist winger or hff who might command 60-70% of the coin that the big fish FA demands? Do we back our current list and continue to add the best midfielders available through the draft?

I'd also add a genuine small defender to our 'acquisition list'.

Not surprising at all that Murph is staying for good.

Anybody who watched the Mike Sheahan ‘Open Mike’ interview with his father (John Murphy) knew this would be the likely outcome.

Mike: “John, what was your biggest footballing regret?”

John Murphy: “not being a one club player”

is he already contracted for 2018 and this is for 2019 and beyond?

Regardless giving someone a possible three years when you will be turning 31 is highly unusual. One year deals when you reach 30 should be the norm imho.

Yes he is.

The way I read the article, it would be for 2 years until the end of the 2020 season with a 1yr option.

Don't think Murphy has the tackling ability to play as a permanent forward pocket.

He'll transition to a wing/HFF role where his elite running, elite smarts and strong delivery inside 50 will be an asset for another 3-4 years.

I agree with this. With the addition of Kennedy he won't need to be diving into the bottom of packs like he has been doing. We could certainly use his kicking ability after trading Gibbs and being without Doc in 2018.

Think we will see Kennedy spend time forward. Reads the play well, strong overhead, good set shot, spent a bit of time forward as a youngster. He won't be just a mid imo.

I suspect we will be drafting mids over the next few years who love to kick goals (Dow).
