Well the mantra of sustained success has failed, hasn't it?
Where in the club's quest for sustained success has a timetable been outlined?

Yes, we'd all hope that we've won a final by 2021, but not at the cost of actual sustained success. It'd be a hard slog, but I'd take no finals wins over the next few years if it were to mean we were then positioned to maintain a level of sustained competitiveness for the 8-10-15 (or whatever) years to follow.

Of course it's impossible to predict at this point - the only tangible bits are the building blocks on the way to that, and no matter how cruddy things look at the moment, it's hard to argue that many of those blocks are being put in place - the eleven names you mentioned, for a start.

Defining 'sustained success' in itself is tricky, but 'winning a final by 2021' would be a target on the way to that, not the goal itself. We can't measure the success of our 'sustained success' between now and 2021 - that's short-term thinking.

Perhaps - but definitely do not want to see Cripps and Docherty in their 30s and not play finals. I am relaxed with the situation but the rate of improvement needs to be done with haste. Other than Fisher and Curnow not many of our other youngsters have a good rate of improvement this year

Lots can change in 6 years. Lots can change in 1. We are on the right path and i dont think any other path would have gone anywhere near to a top 4 finish within the next 5 or so years.

The amount of dead wood we needed to remove was atrocious

I understand all of that - I am referring to the current players and their rate of improvement I do not expect them to be standouts but I 100% want to see them improve their game from last year. We will see by end of year but at this moment this list is not really improving 6 weeks in.

If the rumours are true that Lynch is on his way to Richmond. You would think a few players will be left high and dry.

Higgins and Rioli won't be let go so all of a sudden a Butler or Castagna might be sent packing.

If we could pick up one on the cheap i would be happy. We need a bit more speed and smarts around the goals.

Id say the young guys are struggling with the lack of on field leadership more than anything. Gibbs gone, Doc out for the year, Murphy and Kruezer injured also. It has to be tough for them.

Also think Pickett being injured has really hurt our teams development. We all see what speed gives to a team. If Pickett was breaking the lines it would bring our kids into it more.

Im not concerned about our young group.

If we do somehow get Gaff, draft Rankine, then add Docherty to the group and maybe a Dan Butler type... and have all of murphy, Kruezer, pickett back. We look a completely different side in 2019.

Our kids need leadership. No one saw our seniors getting injured. This had hugely impacted us

I like the way Butler and Castagna play. They reek of players that wouldn't be as good at a lesser club though.

At the right price, I'd be interested. They also have Stengle on their rookie list. He seems a goer too.

I thought the same. I couldn't figure which i would want more or tbh, wanted least.

But both players know their way around the goals. And we have the tall timber up forward to bring it to ground.

It's why i think Gaff is a huge piece to our puzzle. Doesn't cost picks. We could slam a fair chunk of an approx 4 year wage into next year. He has speed, poise and can deliver well into the forward line.

Players like SOJ wouldn't look so average if a Gaff was streaming towards him. And its also why Rankine is my preferred pick.

They traded in quality and gave up high draft picks to compliment their list.
You realise they can do that because they already have a good core of talented mature players to build around?

We will he in the same position only in 4-5 years where guys like doc, cripps and our recent high draft picks are in their mid 20s. Then we can follow their tactic of trading in players and drafting mature age players.

Castagna has really poor skills and is a poor shot for goal. His defensive efforts are really good though which is why he gets games for Richmond.

Between the two Butler is definitely more talented and would be my preference.

Hell even Townsend has looked a good player recently...hes been very accurate.

It's sad that richmond have about 10 players who can play that role...they also had caddy and Higgins. Townsend, rioli and Bolton didn't play on the weekend. We have about 4 on our entire list and that includes Wright and lamb.

No I am saying sustained success if a furphy if Weitering and Curnow don't start playing finals soon.. let me ask you a question If Weitering and Curnow are 25 years old and not won a final yet would you deem that as acceptable?
Look at the tigers Martin was 26 Cotchin 27 Rance 27 and Reiwoldt 28 when they won their first ever final

If he was on his way to the tigers, the fall out will be more substantial than those 2.

IF lynch goes to Richmond then that’s 1.5 plus 1.3ish for Martin, salary cap dosent look to good for the rest of the team.Good luck.
