Doesn't mean he hasn't shown signs as a player. A young one that has battled injuries at that.

Everyone looks better in a good team and worse in a poor team...so it just means Kennedy will improve as our team improves, like most of our players.
Yeah, I've got no doubt he will. But like I said, right now at Carlton he hasn't shown much. Hopefully once he gets his fitness right he'll be able to start showing what he's made of.

Not only that though, Shiel is free agent next year. Entertaining trading anything for him would be ludicrous.
No1pick for GWS’s 4th best mid? No way
Love the way he goes about it but he is seriously over rated. Goes missing too often and has dodgy shoulders.
Like Judd not the type of player that will play well into his 30s

This guy is an absolute moron:

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2018/04/30/should-blues-trade-top-pick-for-established-star/

So, we should trade our top pick this year for Dylan Shiel. NO ******* IDEA whatsoever.
You know, the fact it's Shiel makes it ridiculous and i wouldn't trade our 2018 first in an apparent 'super draft'.

But i would absolutely trade our 2019 1st rounder for an established star. No question, even if it is likely to be a top 5 pick.

From a list perspective, we already have a shitload of talented young kids and will get more in this years draft...our main problem and area of focus now is to DEVELOP these kids to fulfil their potential. At some point there's not much point just stacking more and more talented kids if we're getting smashed and their development is stagnating.

So i'd absolutely put our 2019 1st rounder on the table and would have no issues parting with it for an established gun.

I wouldn't think that our '19 first would be untouchable at all, for the quality of a Shiel.
The majority of the group should be playing together in '19, with a quality cherry or two on top, ready to go in '20

BTW: There's no certainty in draftees becoming A-Graders at all. Don't buy into that theory.
Neither do I TBH.

Someone was talking about DFA/trade opportunities at the end of the year. These are some of the out of contract names I was looking at, as well as looking at our academy intakes:

Trade in: one each of Buntine/Kennedy/Cumming and Sproule/Corr/Himmelberg

RFA/UFA targets: Gaff, Guthrie
DFA targets (or budget trades): Oxley, Sier, Mutch, O'Connor, Lemmens, Lovell, Fiorini, Bugg, Zurhaar, J.Williams, C.Hewett, J.Atley, Drew, Menadue, Ronke, N.Newman, F.Watson, Karpany, Finlayson

Academy draft picks: BSOS, Will Hickmott
Academy rookie chances: Manton (Cat A), Brazier (Cat B), M.Wild (Cat B), Penrith (Cat B)

Next year every Vic team will go after Shiel. Using the Dogs as an example with Boyd, getting on the front foot may be the difference between getting him or not.

Pick 1/2 is of course well overs, but I would not be averse should something else come back our way. Lions would like to trade pick 2 (Shache) for someone of that ilk in retrospect - sure things aren't always so. We can't go another year like this in the middle.

Our 2019 1st round pick needs to be traded this trade period otherwise we will lose it next year.

Shiel or another FA nominates us, their club matches and we lose the pick.

Trade it this year and clubs will have no incentive to match.

Sorry I couldn’t highlight the relevant sentence, but why is pick 1/2 overs for Shiel?

Go back and tell me in the last 10 years which number 1 pick is better than Shiel.

I absolutely like the idea of Gaff and Guthrie as RFA. I would love us to chase both hard. I also really like the idea of throwing our 2019 1st at Port for Wines and see if there is interest there. I think BSOS and Hickmott are almost givens as in under F/S.

Cripps has less support than Judd did.

Well there's been talk about trading our 2019 1st for Wines (mostly by me :p but I'm not the only one).

I just think he's young enough to be around for the next decade with Cripps and Kennedy and it really bolsters that inside mid department.

If we get Shiel we'll be set.

Cripps, Wines and Kennedy as inside mids.

Rankine, Dow and Shiel acceleration and drive.

SPS skillset, LOB running ability, Fisher hunger for the contest all there as well and that is an extremely well balanced midfield.

If only it were that simple...
As we've discussed previously BF , what you have laid out here would be a sensational outcome.
Yes the odds would say it's a long shot in landing both Wines and Shiel but we definitely have the means to get it done should we be able to convince them to nominate us.
Big $$$ long term contracts would be needed for both players but the money would have been provided for in our long term planning.
Rankine drafted this year
Wines traded for this year (2019 1st rounder)
Shiel taken as a FA next year.
These 3 added to what we already have developing on the books and it's looking good.
I'd also make a play for Wallis as a FA this year to further boost our midfield stocks.
Add B.Silvagni with a later pick and a small forward and small defender with our 2 2nd rounders and the list is starting to look a lot classier and balanced.

That’s not how the system works.

If Shiel is a restricted FA, we can make an offer, and if the Giants match, either he chooses to stay or he enters the draft.

If they don’t match, he’s ours, and we don’t give up any pick for him.
