David King on 360 earlier when talking about Crippa:

King: "Cripps is the most tackled player in the competition. He could really do with some help. Ollie Wines would be perfect. They really should go after him". *Raises eyebrows as he looks at Sellars and adds*. "There are a lot of whispers around that they are".

Ya never know, but i reckon we're into him BIG time. It makes sense that we are to me. Perfect player, perfect time, for our team.
For all the reasons many here have stated and discussed , it's time to pull out all the stops here.
If at the end of the day Wines says no to Carlton , Silvagni must put his head on the pillow knowing that there's not a single thing more he could have done to secure him.

Yeah , gut feel says that Wines has really been given something to think about over the next few weeks. I really think SOS, Dodo and Port are waiting on tenterhooks.

Gut is also murmuring that , if Ollie prefers Vic, just maybe us and Port could come to a mutual deal more than Dodo and Port could. That's how you get a gun's sig these days. Promise you can get it done satisfactorily for all.

Probably no love lost between Dodo and Port with the Power snaring Ryder recently and Wanganeen before that.
On the other hand as JAB recently pointed out , Silvagni last trade period took Lobbe and his contract off Ports books.
Minor points perhaps but everyone would have preferred trading partners with working relationships.
If Wines is keen , there's no doubt Carlton would have the ability to facilitate a suitable trade in everyone's eyes.

and whatever our Pick is in this superdraft with 2 gun SA'ers, it'll be a helluva lot better than Dodo's. Dodo's pick won't get Luko or Rankine.

I’d rather Sloane. I know his age is a bit above what we are looking for but he is an excellent two-way running midfielder who would provide fantastic leadership for the young guys to help them develop and fits our list a bit better. Could get him without a trade and take our first pick to the draft.

Wines or Shiels would be good but Gaff should be the no.1 target !!

It is a bit weird. At one stage he looked like staying as their next captain. I would be devastated if I was a Port supporter and lost him as he approaches best years of his career. They got to up their offer and make sure they keep him.

I don't want to trade our first pick for Wines.. in an era of free agency we either get a free agent or hit the draft. We don't want to stuff up this rebuild. Trading this year's and next year's first rounders is a not a great decision. Wines is not elite. He's an honest footballer slightly better version of Ed Curnow..

I'm not saying it is a pressing issue, but it's a gifted contract on what we've seen so far.
You mean on what you have seen so far! Fair to say the club has seen and know a lot more. He's a talented young kid that has missed a lot of football through injury. This is effectively his first year. Shown some very good signs and has some things to work on. Can't believe some people are criticising giving a young kid a 2 year deal. Unbelievable. Great for the club and his development.

No way. Macreadie could be as good as any of them. Genuine talent that can play forward wing or back.
Weitering and Marchbank far ahead of him. We got Jones, Plowman etc etc. We simply cannot keep playing so many talls down back. I am still waiting to see what exactly excites others about him. I am still getting over Larkey giving him a football lesson last year in.... VFL...

Show me some good football Macreadie. Looking forward to a nice surprise.

He hasn't shown 'very good signs' which is my point. He's had patchy VFL form and hasn't been up to it AFL level; in difficult circumstances admittedly.

As I have stated above, I would have waited until the end of the year when we've got a greater body of work to judge him on. A mid-year extension after having a relatively ordinary start to the year is a little eager. It's not even criticism! It's an evaluation of his performance v the contract. It's also not his first year - last year he did almost a whole pre-season and then played 17 games at VFL and VFL Development level.

I hope he makes it, but on the basis of his form he hasn't warranted a mid-year 2-year contract.

Blackburn United EPL ... sorta
It is what comes to mind... Ryder, Dixon, Motlop, Watts and Rockliff may be costing them something to have brought in over recent years... Going to be very interesting.
Yup Port went hard last year. Wines will be wanting serious coin which in all probability … they can't give.

We had to do them a favour last year by taking Lobbe on high coin just so they could squeeze the FA's in.

Robbie Gray and Wingard surely on big coin too.

Port need to make something of this season given how much they have invested into their present to short term prospects. Friday night big game for them. Lose and panic could set in their window closing rapidly.

Probably because it's the same club that signed players like Joseph and Ellard to extended contracts and kept Lucas, Watson and a few others way too long.
And, yes I know, that this is a new regime but they still do not have a God given right to be right.

Riddle me this (and I may be wrong) but didn't the same regime take a long time to sign Cuningham last year and then only for one year and are yet to renew. Does this mean that Polson has more to offer than Cuningham?

I think people are more questioning than criticising and it is not wrong to question. Fair argument to say that a 1 year extension would be more appropriate, it can always be increased mid contract if the player starts to rip it. Not like this hasn't been done in the past.

I think he has and importantly so has the club. It takes 3-4 years for most young players to step up and become good AFL players. I just think some on here are to quick to write young players off. IMO this kid can play.

I would. Ed this year has shown he is more than just an honest footballer. He is the beat run with player in the league and is playing Robin to Cripp's Batman in the coal face, and Wines is a fair step above him in talent.

If we got Wines and Kennedy comes on as we expect, our inside grunt is sorted while we get to watch SPS, Dow and Fisher flourish around them.

Do we trade Pick 1 for Ollie Wines if he wants to come to Carlton? Prefer not too obviously - but what's his worth. Pre Season Pick 1 probably helps with negotiations.

Or do we trade a young kid ala Cuningham and future picks?

I like Wines, would certainly add grunt and skill set we lack, but there are more than enough FA's to be added rather than spending a combination of valuable draft picks as well as cap space on the likes of Wines, at this phase of our rebuild

Guthrie, Wallis, Gaff, Dahlhaus, Lycett, as well as OOC players, that would be cheaper options

I really don't think we'll have pick 1. More than happy to part with any other pick for Wines which allows Port to take Rankine. If we take Walsh, Smith etc we hope that they become as good as Wines. A no brainer for mine keeping in mind Weller went for pick 2 last year.
