The one thing I will say on that is, everyone has to stop assuming he will be free next year. There is a huge market for him in Melbourne, if GWS know he is planning on leaving, they will cash in to the highest bidder this year. Shiel wants to return to Melbourne, would like Carlton, but we are not the be all and end all.

They only want us to do the trade so that if it doesn't meet expectations they can then write a follow up article of how stupid we were to trade out the number 1 pick.

Yep, understand and agreed. He's a player who has hit his ceiling - but he's a solid contributor who can do a few different things. Certainly well ahead of some of what we trot out each week, and would happily have him at the Blues.

Its very much about the dollars these days. And thats ok. I suspect cripps and Charlie's contracts will be heavily front loaded into the 2019 cap.
I still see us not getting out of the bottom 4 next year but stranger things have happened... to me 6-7 wins is around the mark for 2019 with 2020 to go well past that and into the double digits.
Players aren't dumb! We may be sitting low on the ladder but its plain to see the quality on our list. 22 more games to go after this year and we will be a tough team to beat.
Setterfield this year is now the guy i want. Poor kid has done nothing so far in his career but i get the feeling he could be a good get. Hopefully a 2nd rounder (we can all live in hope).
Setterfield and walsh next year already make our team look better on paper. Doesnt mean more wins in 2019. But its would be a great addition looking towards the future. These 2 are priority! Add Dahlhous and we look much better
What about Jackson Thurlow as a FA (not sure if RFA or FA)?
Looked promising until he lost the 2017 season to injury, normally takes a year to get over it fully but has played some decent VFL football this year playing a few senior games.
Only 24 and would come at a lower price than say a Lloyd.
Would prefer him over the Shaws or O'Sheas on the list.

Agree. I'd love Setterfield. Think he will be elite. My gut feeling is GWS will let Shiel go so they can retain guys like Setterfield & Hopper.
If we can add Setterfield & Walsh to Cripps Kennedy Dow SPS Fisher Curnow Cuningham that is a midfield that can take us places. Kelly and/or Gaff etc would be even better
Maybe. I'd rather get Lester. Underrated and being back in Melbourne he may thrive. Really good ball user and sets up play well from HB. 25 years old so would help Doc, Willo etc

Yeah that midfield is starting to take shape with those 2 added to it. If we can put together 8-10 mids within a 2-3 age gap, i feel its our best form of sustained success. Of course id love shiel. He's a damn good player. I just see much more benefits in getting Walsh.
We need run off half back which Thurlow would provide more of that than Lester. He's also a lovely kick of the ball.
Lester who I've watched quite a lot of is more of a swingman with no defined position.
If we brought Lester in he'd be of more value as a forward/midfield option than back for our list.
Which means both could be realistic targets.
Lester feels like a list clogger, sort of in the same vein of Mullet and O'Shea.
Everybody has to stop assuming that just because he might not be available next year, it would be the right move to get into a bidding war for him. We need midfielders but trading for Shiel is not the be all and end all.
We're not in a position to turn average players into even role players just yet.
For the one that adds anything, half a dozen just don't.
This ratio doesn't work well and we'd be better off starting from scratch with rookies.

Lester's best footy as been at HB and he is a FA and 25 so I'm just looking at players that can come in and help.
Also, like to see Cuningham or Garlett or even SPS off HB. Such a vital role now. Lots of sides are now playing midfielders off HB. We also have Docherty Williamson Schumacher Byrne that can play there. Lamb has been solid in defence. Be nice to see them all fit and firing.

This is the worst bit of the rebuild, where we've made a lot of moves for the future that haven't YET come to fruition. So the on-field is as bad as it gets.
Agree with the sentiments here that it's not the time to panic and go quick fix. Moneyball acquisitions and serious quality from the draft. I think we smash the piggy bank open next year and try to land some big names.

GWS will not risk missing out on winning their first ever flag next year by trading Shiel this year for a mid-late first round pick. However i do agree that he wont be free next year, GWS will match the offer to ensure that they get a decent pick and not the comp pick likely to be pick 15-18. This is another thing that costs the bottom teams & advantages the top teams with free agents.. Like Gold Coast losing Lynch this year, they are unlikely to get better than pick 3 so will most likely accept the free agency compo... where GWS lose Shiel next year, they match the offer and a team like Carlton has to give up valuable draft picks to get them.. The system is f@rked and no doubt the AFL will only realise this once we have picked ourselves off the grass and doing okay.

Spot on!
It was forseen this year was going to be tough. Doc going down and constant injuries have impacted us greatly. We arent as bad as it looks. I had a feeling we just wouldnt lift at all this season and due to one reason or another, this is now fact.
Theres many bonuses of us getting injuries and having a tough year.
1. Kids that might havr only got a very small look now have a huge taste for it.
2. Kids that still haven't played afl at the top level are getting more of an opportunity in the seconds.
3. Doc and others return next year.
4. We finish the year with higher draft picks (im not one for high picks but it is what it is).
5. We have seen players get a gig in the 22 and flounder. This is the beginning of the end for them and it will help us clear the decks a little further.
Im sure there's more positives also. No doubt negatives and im not shying away from those as they have been done to death.
Hold the nerve 1 more year. More quality kids. Games into them. A bit more maturity brought on board. We will see a shift next year. Followed by an even bigger one in 2020

Sorry to drag the convo back to Fasolo … but I really can't see the point. Add to that, another player with systemic ankle issues (we already have Daisy and Kennedy thanks), plus shoulder issues (Insert multiple players here). To top it off … he just aint that good and turns 26?27? next year?????

Of course they will be able to, the accountants are able to move money around to make sure their is room fully aware that they will never have to pay it.

If he is choosing Carlton over every other Victorian club than it'll be because of $. Dollars GWS can't match.
