This years PP and next years first for Shiel and setterfield.

This is a lock.

Then

Take Sam Walsh/Rankine and 2 picks in 20’s.

I’d try for 1 of those plus the bolt for Brodie ( this one maybe a little but wishful)

Then Dahlhaus free agent and we are looking the goods.

Even a PP at the beginning of the second round would put us in the box seat for setterfield, if we ended up with pick 10 I’d happily part with our current second rounders

All good SHT wasn't really a crack at you matey … just getting tired of bringing less than 100% fit players to the club. This is a cut throat game/business where less than a 10% drop of in outputs yield very unfavourable results ….
Sometimes I wonder if this has been happening because sos is a genuine tight arse or decent (and not injured) players preferring to go elsewhere

Probably...I’m hoping he has been using the initial period of our rebuild as an opportunity to see what he can unearth for cheap...money alone is no guarantee of course (north good example of this) but still think he will now need to open the wallet a little wider for us to have a real chance at snagging a solide player..as we improve overall as a club (which we seem to be doing) we should start attracting quality...

Why pay overs when the list isn't ready for it. That will come once the core start to build and gain momentum.

Until then, cheaper type options are beneficial

He wanted to hit the draft. If we chased people to hard we lost picks that we wouldn't have now if we did. I can't remember who it was but people were saying in 2016 they wanted to trade for someone and use our second and third round pick.. if we did that we wouldn't have Fisher so it was warranted all he did was bring in developed bodies and now he's done what he needed to id date say his outlook will change a little

Umm, sure, in the short term. But we are NOT about a quick fix to finish mid-table. We are about building a list that can win a flag.

Paul Ahern is a good example of the potential rewards of bringing players in under an injury cloud. Didn't play a game in his first season at North. He is now a regular and is a "name" player after only 10 games at age 22. There are successes and failures. If Setterfield came to us I would be delighted. He has enormous upside.

OTOPH if Fasolo comes to us I will be bitterly disappointed. He has limited upside and Daisy-like downside in more ways than one. And a 3 year contract? They can't be serious.

We're not in a position to turn average players into even role players just yet.
For the one that adds anything, half a dozen just don't.

This ratio doesn't work well and we'd be better off starting from scratch with rookies.

Agree with this sentiment. Our recruiting strategy needs to say yes to players with potential (Pickett, Garlett, Lang, etc) and no to players whose potential is very limited (i.e. O'Shea, Mullett, Lobbe, ASOS, to name a few).

ASOS was useful (very) in games last year and his injuries were unforeseen BUT, he represents a place on the list. He was never going to play in a Premiership for us. Likewise Lobbe is very useful for us at the moment. He is playing ahead of Caz and is clearly a better ruckman. But, again, he is never going to play in a premiership for us. I would much rather those 2 positions on the list were filled by "kids with potential" who could become anything even if useless this year. So what? We will still come 18th.

How can a PP be a lock if we haven't even received one.

That will be up to the AFL at the end of the season & we may not even get one.

We need SOS to somehow turn Pick 1 into a midfield of:

Cripps, Shiel, Walsh, Dow, Kelly, Scully, Ward, Cerra, Murphy, Coniglio, SPS and Fisher.

If you've somehow added just about the entire GWS midfield in Shiel, Kelly, Scully, Coniglio (plus Cerra) why not continue and also add Hopper, Taranto, Martin, Dangerfield, Fyfe, Bontempelli, Mitchell, JP Kennedy, Gaff, Oliver, Treloar, Macrae, Merrett, Crouch, Neale, Zorko, Beams, Gray, Pendlebury...

Only if gws win the flag this year from my point of view, if so it is an ok deal, however gws management may prefer to deal with st Kilda and get this year's pick 4

Interesting that it’s being reported Gaff is either staying or it’s North. To me this is another reminder of where our next phase of recruiting must turn to (free agency). If we could get Shiel + Setterfield for next years first + .... (I’m a bit dubious that it’s possible), we need to go hard.

We need some quality experience to help develop the talent we already have, get some swagger and confidence (as well as a good run with injury) and it is amasing how quickly things can turn. Free agents will then find us more appealing and it can snowball from there. If North had a year like they had last year there is no way they would be a shot of landing free agents, but as it stands they are a good chance of getting Gaff and Polec in one off-season.

North are really overrating their list. Great that they might gain those players, but not sure it will take them to a top 4 side

That's fair enough. I think with the emergence of Ahern and a few others they aren't too badly placed but I have my doubts as well as to whether they can build a sustained top 4 team. I can see why they don't want to go down the painful path we have gone down though.
