The one thing I will say on that is, everyone has to stop assuming he will be free next year. There is a huge market for him in Melbourne, if GWS know he is planning on leaving, they will cash in to the highest bidder this year. Shiel wants to return to Melbourne, would like Carlton, but we are not the be all and end all.

No, he'll go wherever he nominates. If the price isn't too high then GWS will match and force a trade but I reckon he'd have to go fairly cheap (relative to the amount of talk about him) for GWS to be able to afford to match the salary. They're already deferring some of Greene's payments, if they match and the trade doesn't get done they're going to have maybe a week to trade out or delist other players to make up that cash.

If they do match and try and get crazy overs in a trade, well I'm pretty sure we won't be down for that. Wouldn't surprise me if next years first is gone by the end of the upcoming trade week so next year we're just dealing with 2nds or less, leaving GWS the option of taking a 2st round compo or trading for 2nds/3rds/etc.

He may want to come home this year, but why would GWS entertain a trade?

I doubt they'd get higher than pick 10 for him if they trade him this year, but they are in a premiership window this year and next, why not keep him for 2019 to have a crack at the flag then get first round compo?
To get a better return than the compensation pick. Especially if multiple players are set to leave.

Be awesome to land him but what would it cost? Can't see 19 getting it done and 1 is too high. Maybe next years first rounder for Setterfield and this years second round pick?

Too much to pay for an unproven young player coming off an ACL. I have concerns over trading in another injury prone GWS player as well. Stats don't bode well for kids doing ACLs that young.

Couple things....

One major injury does not equal injury prone.

As I've just posted in another thread, Brendan Goddard did an acl and look at him. If you're going to say 'stats say it doesn't bode well', then produce the stats. As Goddard did his in 2007 (fairly young in AFL terms) and now look at him. Dan Menzel did his very young and he's done very well.

From just a casual conversation from my friend working in the physio department at the swans it's definitely perceived as 'if a player is going to do a knee much prefer he does it earlier as the body is far more capable of healing quicker and stronger, whilst remaining flexible'

I agree that one injury doesn't mean they're injury prone.

But Setterfield unfortunately has a poor history with injuries. He had knee surgery at the end of 2014, something to do with his patella. Played with pain in that knee for the first half of 2015 before taking the rest of the year off. 2016 plagued with concussion, foot and shoulder injuries. We all know about the ACL.

So Toddski is spot on when he said he's injury prone.

I know he's had a few minor things, what player hasn't. Doesn't equate to injury plagued to me.

Cheers Fusion.

Yeah there is actually little to no footage of him actually playing in his junior years because he was always injured. I hope this turns around for the kid but yeah it's a risk I'm not sure we can afford to take.

Will said himself that once he did his ACL he was "pretty angry at the time because I haven't had a good run with injuries".

If you disagree that's your prerogative, but most would say he's been injury prone.
I tend to also apply a lower weight to injury history outside of the elite system at top level. Would prefer to back him in with the support of good fitness, nutritional and physio staff.

ACL, Patella, Shoulder injuries... Just a few "minor" things. Man I would hate to find out what major is!

Ankle injury and two concussions limited his first season too. So that's 4 years in a row he's suffered significant time on the sidelines due to injury.

We're not talking about whether he can overcome them, only time will tell. Todd said he was injury prone and he was right.
