I do not want to sound alarmist, but do people think we can financially survive another lengthy rebuild?

Money is and will never be an issue after what the AFL have given the suns and giants and have pumped into the AFLW.

The problem comes is the afl stop funding the AFLW fully and we have to carry that turkey financially because that will ruin us and do it quickly.

Not quite membership but:

According to the annual Roy Morgan AFL supporter ladder the Western Bulldogs increased its base by a phenomenal 42.1 per cent year on year to boast 351,000 fans.

Commenting on the study. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine said: “The Sydney Swans are again Australia’s most widely supported AFL club for the 14th straight year now with 1.17 million supporters, over half-a-million supporters ahead of the two leading Victorian clubs Collingwood with 660,000 supporters and Essendon with 651,000 supporters.

“However it is the recent success of the Western Bulldogs, Richmond and Hawthorn that highlights the importance of on-field performance to growing the supporter base in the stands.

“The Western Bulldogs drought-breaking Premiership in 2016 has resulted in a surge of support for the club now at 351,000 and up a stunning 42.1 per cent from a year ago while reigning Premiers Richmond increased their support by 10.2 per cent to 487,000.

That's impressive.
I wonder if there is any data on the decay period (half-life) after a premiership without follow up success. Similarly, are there any stats on when / if a club's "following" gets converted to "membership"? If we had Melbourne's conversion rate we'd have well over 70,000 members!

why the one year lag though or did we get a similar lift from 16 to 17 - Tommycash not sure where you found the data, any chance you can find last years numbers?

In regards to the decay rate and membership conversions, Morgans would have the data or could create it. (I imagine they have done the same survey for many years). Not sure how you would get yours hands on it though.

So in 2017 we had fewer supporters and a better conversion rate.

I suppose the earlier years shows how significant the drop off in "supporters" can be once a team falls away from the finals pack. We went from 303,000 in 2011 to 208,000 in 2014 which is pretty damn significant. It is kind of surprisingly significant in fact. So much so you have to wonder what exactly constitutes being a supporter? I can understand losing members but how can a team lose 100,000 fans in 3 years?

Take these polls with a thousand grains of salt. They surveyed less than 15,000 people and extrapolated that out to 24 million people - when you add to that the undoubtedly loose definition of 'supporter' there has to be a huge margin of error.

ie any non-interested Sydneysider who is asked which AFL team they support is going to say the Swans, regardless of whether they even know the club colours. I'd do the same for Melbourne Storm and I couldn't care less about them. All of a sudden they've got 50% more supporters than the next best team yet have tens of thousands less members.
