I made this thread last year but intend on keeping it slightly more updated throughout 2018.

As has been a constant theme the last few years, 2018 will be another year with a large group of players eligible for the rising star. A meaningless award, but often gives us supporters good hope for the future, and is a good way to get some coverage and recognition for impressive performances from our younger guys.
- Of last years eligible players, only 1 recognition to Ben Ainsworth for his 3 goal game against Essendon, whilst Brayden Fiorini was shafted for a nomination constantly, even after putting up 12 20+ disposal games -

The players with potential to feature in the award through 2018 are:

Jack Scrimshaw
Senior games: 4

Best performance 2017:
Round 19 v Richmond: 12 disposals, 4 marks, 5 intercepts @ 92%DE

Thoughts: Had a few injury/concussion scares this year. Playing well enough in the NEAFL to warrant senior games toward the end of the year. still unclear on best position.

JLT performance summary:
Notable performances of 2018: N/A

Brad Scheer
Senior games: 8

Best performance 2017:
Round 10 v Melbourne: 10 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 1 behind.

Thoughts: Consistently playing well in the NEAFL. Had a few call ups and will be better for it in the long run. Needs more games in the middle but his leg speed is a worry when it comes to following opposition. Needs to maximise his strengths which is contested ball and clearances. something we lack severely.

JLT performance summary:
Notable performances of 2018:

Round 8 vs Melbourne: 18 disposals - 8 contested, 3 marks, 1 tackle, 3 clearances

Connor Nutting

Senior games: 0

Draft No:
55

Thoughts:
Have not seen or heard enough of him to judge yet.
JLT performance summary:
Notable performances of 2018:

Will Brodie
Senior games: 6

Best performance 2017:
Round 23 v Port Adelaide: 23 disposals, 6 tackles, 2 clearances, 8CP

Thoughts: No REAL reason to not be playing in the 1's consistently as he's been a bull in the NEAFL every game. needs to build his tank but still looks like he'll be a good inside player. Needs time and OPPORTUNITY.

JLT performance summary:
Notable performances of 2018:

Round 12 vs GWS: 14 disposals - 8 contested, 3 marks, 1 goal, 7 tackles, 4 clearances

Round 16 vs North Melbourne: 24 disposals - 12 contested, 3 centre clearances, 4 tackles, 6 clearances, 4 score involvements
Round 18 vs Sydney: 27 disposals - 11 contested, 2 marks, 6 tackles, 5 clearances - 3 centre clearances
Round 19 vs Carlton: 27 disposals-12 contested, 1 behind, 6 tackles, 6 clearances - 4 centre clearances, 5 score involvements, 512mg
Round 20 vs Melbourne: 23 Disposals - 13 contested, 3 tackles, 3 clearances - 2 centre clearances

Wil Powell
Senior games: 2

Draft No: 19

Thoughts: Slight frame, and does not ready for the rigours of AFL football but may get a debut at some point this year. one to look out for more in 2019/2020. Performances in the NEAFL are very promising.

JLT performance summary: N/A
Notable performances of 2018:

Round 15 vs Collingwood: 10 disposals, 4 marks, 1 goal, 4 score involvements

Round 16 vs North Melbourne: 15 disposals @ 87%DE - 8 contested, 3 stoppage clearances, 2 score involvements

Charlie Ballard
Senior games: 9

Draft No: 42

Thoughts: Impressive in the contest for someone very underdeveloped. Great contested mark, has plenty of versatility and looks like he could develop into a midfielder. Huge win.

JLT performance summary:
Notable performances of 2018:

Round 13 vs St Kilda: 16 disposals - 4 contested, 8 marks, 1 tackle, 3 1%'s

Brayden Crossley
Senior games: 3

Draft No:
52

Thoughts: Physical beast. Versatile with his ability to play ruck but also play a key forward role well. Didn't disappoint on debut vs WB.

JLT performance summary:
Notable performances of 2018:

Round 7 vs WB: 13 disposals - 9 contested, 2 marks, 1.1 goals, 5 tackles, 7 hitouts

Josh Schoenfeld:
Senior games: 12

Best performance 2017:
Round 20 v Fremantle: 18 Disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 1 behind

Thoughts: Strong performances in the NEAFL all year, and got his call up round 11 vs St Kilda. Didn't light the world on fire but was a solid winger who found space all day. Still developing but could be a good player.

JLT performance summary:
Notable performances of 2018:

Round 14 vs Hawthorn: 20 disposals - 4 contested, 5 marks, 1 behind, 3 tackles, 5 score involvements

Max Spencer:
Senior games: 7

Best performance 2017: Round 23 vs Port Adelaide: 20 disposals, 6 marks, 1 tackle, 3 rebound 50's

Thoughts:
Playing well in the NEAFL. Still needs to put on size but is solid defensively and is pretty clean with ball in hand. his 1%ers are good for a second year player.

Notable performances of 2018: N/A

Jacob Heron:
Senior games: 3

Thoughts:
Looks quick, puts on pressure and skills are solid. Very light and will probably take a few seasons to come on

Notable performances of 2018:
Round 9 vs Port Adelaide: 10 disposals 6 contested, 1 goal, 3 tackles

Jacob Dawson:
Senior games: 2

Best performance 2017: n/a

Thoughts:
Playing well in the NEAFL and looked likely for a debut for a while. Will be better for the experience and looks like he could be a player for the future. very good, local accumulator.

Notable performances of 2018:

Round 15 vs Collingwood: 17 disposals - 10 contested, 2 marks, 1 goal, 3 tackles, 1 clearance, 4 score involvements.

Rookies available to be nominated for the award:

*Will write up rookies when/if they get upgraded to primary list

If he doesn’t play much this year, I can see Dawson being a chance next year providing we keep him. Has got a great ability to find the ball

Voting for Brodie having played no games and proven nothing is like voting for Luke Davies-Unicorn. He's not even the best NEAFL player, let alone the best of our Rising Star potentials.

I'm betting he'll play this year... and sooner than you think..

Keep playing him now , I don't care about his slim build

Charlie Ballard

Despite his side getting trounced by the Giants, Gold Coast’s South Australian draftee Charlie Ballard showed some positive signs, playing in a role across the wing which saw him also spend plenty of time in the backlines. Ballard’s nine contested possessions were a highlight, given his slim build and the fact he spent most of his under-age career as an outside type. Perhaps the Suns officials see him as more of a big-bodied, balanced midfielder once he further develops. His 10 intercept possessions were also good to see, with his overhead marking and ability to read the play standing out. Look for Ballard to be played in a wide variety of positions, such is his versatility.

I'm liking his ability to hit 20-30m kicks into the corridor.
Doesn't bullet them but weights them well into a hole for our players.

Thinking he looks more like a CHF or a Winger than a defender though tbh. His defensive work isn't really that impressive, it's just his ability to read the ball and find space that's appealing about him in the backline

He is more a winger or Doedee type than one and one defender , can't wait for him and KK playing together .

Hoping Ballard will get a nomination this week, it's possible as North tend to target Ben brown 80% of the time when going in the forward 50 which means if he is able to read the play he could find himself cutting them off when going forward to score and end up getting a lot of intercept marks and disposals. I think we should play him as a loose man across the half back line and be a third man up against brown for when it comes in deep to give Thompson or May extra support for spoils.

with how the match committee is spreading the games around we are going to have a lot of boys eligible next year. conceivable we go into 2019 with 3 of 5 2016 draftees, all bar ballard from the 2017 draftees, and all out 2018 draftees eligible for the rising star.

Think Crossley will get to 10 games this year because of injuries to Lynch and Day. .. Brodie may also play out the season - which would make both ineligible for next years rising star...
