59,721 @ Perth Stadium for SoO last night.
Now hold the record crowd at the venue

Could be a similar situation to Docklands stadium were Rugby League, Union and soccer all hold higher crowds than the best AFL game.

Not sure that really means much but it's something to note.

I would say it means very little. Can't even be sure it is counted on the same basis as AFL crowds (i.e. exclusive of staff)

Meanwhile ratings were pretty poor last night. Failed to get to 2 million FTA metro viewers.

Can't imagine channel 9 would want to stick it out with Sunday night origin. Cleaves a fair whack out of ratings it seems

Bit harsh. The game was a blowout.

Yep result had an impact. There was no real difference in pre game audience

Game 1 Pre game show
1,187,000447,000186,000420,00060,00074,000

Game 2 Pre game show
1,169,000454,000147,000408,00059,000100,000

And then Sydney and Brisbane had a 100k+ drop off each comparing game time figures and 49k increase in Perth counterbalanced with 46k drop off in Melbourne and Adelaide combined.

The blow out likely had some effect but it looks a pretty obvious working hypothesis after two years that Sunday's are worse for ratings than wednesday nights

The pregame last year was also significantly closer to game 1 than its actual ratings ended up. Suggests people are (slightly) relatively more likely to watch the pre game on a Sunday if they are watching the match

Looks like the gloss has come of the big shiny new Parramatta stadium already with only 9000 last night for two NRL Sydney teams. Looks like "the build it and they will come theory" isnt working!
that didn't take long

Completely without any basis in evidence that a shiny new stadium in the same proximate spot as the old one has any substantial sustained impact on attendance

Adelaide oval was built in the same spot on the edge of the city which is no where near football park where the AFL teams played previously

This is like shelling peas

No expectation that the furious &/or spurious would understand, it worked a treat for cricket.

no shock they are full of fanboi crap

How about Geelong or the MCG after the southern stand upgrade.

Or heaps of examples overseas. Wembley Stadium for example. and it is not just average attendance. It is corporate income and other revenue sources.

But lets call the money on Parramatta stadium a waste after 1 bad game.

If they get a Larry Kestleman type running it, it is a very good move. If they get another David Gallop type, then it's a pointless move.

The minute they bring in relegation and one of the a-league clubs drops to the second division is the second the comp implodes. Imagine Melbourne City running around playing in Morwell etc. Victory would start war before they drop down - especially if South melb come up - victory would have no supporters overnight

On the basis of probabilities I'd say it is fantastic news for football in Australia to the extent soccer poses any significant strategic threat

Most likely will set soccer on a path to turmoil. Some chance it will stabalise it I guess but I would have thought that is the less likely option based on history

Lets hope the Goodes issue does not cause similar problems for the administration of the AFL.
