Cripes:

  • Dr Withers says a specialist has indicated Brayshaw's teeth will likely not be viable, saying they have lost their nerve supply. Brayshaw may now require "extensive dental work" and "possible implants".

Dr Withers says Brayshaw suffered a horizontal fracture through his jaw. He says Brayshaw's teeth were hinged backwards "a couple of centimetres into his mouth".

Gaff is describing one particular incident where he has been checked by a Fremantle opponent, saying his opponent is "blocking his run" and "not looking at the ball". He says the ball is 30m away at the time of the incident.

Not the best defence I would have thought:

"Grace is now showing a passage of play just prior to the incident involving Gaff and Brayshaw. It shows Brayshaw running alongside Gaff. Gaff says he is "trying to get to the next contest", but says he is "being impeded (by Brayshaw) and not being able to get a free run towards the contest"."

Well, I guess the only reasonable thing to do is punch the guy in the head.

Seriously, this is the sort of thing that happens to good AFL midfielders all the time every single game.

Yep. They are really struggling to come up with any sort of reason (because there really isn't any).

IMO He should just go with "I truly had a brain fade. I do not know why, Stress of my decision over my next contract perhaps is weighing on me more than I realised, but honestly I have no excuse and I am deeply ashamed".

"Gaff says: "I meant to get him in the chest. I feel sick that I got him in the face. I had no intention to hit him where I hit him. I tried to do a similar hit to what I did 10 seconds earlier with my right arm." "

My one thing with this argument is why then did he run off. If he had truly not meant to hit him in the face, why not stop and check how he was?

Gaff says he asked West Coast officials if he could be interviewed on TV afterwards to express that he was sorry for his actions.

Gaff rejects Gleeson's suggestion that in being horrified at punching Brayshaw, he has reconstructed in his mind what his actual intentions were.

  • Gaff rejects the suggestion he was frustrated by being checked by Brayshaw. He says he only intended to push Brayshaw's chest to get some space momentarily.

Gaff maintains his earlier claim that Brayshaw's downward movement was what resulted in his strike hitting Brayshaw in the head, not the chest.

Gaff rejects Gleeson's suggestion that he swung his dominant left arm as hard as he could: "That's not correct."

Gleeson questions why Gaff said he targeted Brayshaw's stomach, before then saying he targeted Brayshaw's chest.

Gaff: "By stomach I meant chest."

Gaff is now being examined by the AFL's legal counsel Jeff Gleeson QC.

Gaff: "I'm devastated, I'm shattered. I've never been reported or fined before. It really has been a very, very difficult 48 hours. But the main person I feel for is Andrew. He's a young guy who is making his way into the AFL. It's something very out of character for me, it's a hard pill to swallow. It's really hit me hard."

Gaff says he messaged Brayshaw that night, saying how "truly sorry he was" for what happened and how sick he felt.

Gaff on being targeted by Fremantle's players in the aftermath of the incident: "I could understand where they were coming from."

Gaff: "I feel sick about how Andrew is feeling. I am so sorry for what has now happened to Andrew. I'm shattered, I never intended for this to happen. There was a time on the bench where you gather your thoughts a little bit more. I was heartbroken. The coach talked to me and tried to keep me focused on the rest of the game, but I was rattled. It was very hard to keep playing from that point on. I've always prided myself on playing the ball. I'm very disappointed for how it ended. I'm just so sorry for Andrew and how he's feeling at the moment."

Gleeson says there was "unsatisfactory" elements within Gaff's evidence. He says that "within seconds" Gaff changed his view that it was his intention to strike in the chest, to that it was his intention to strike in the stomach.

Gleeson: "The strike was unrestrained in his execution, ferocious in its impact and grave in its consequences. It was a full-blooded punch."

Gleeson: "This is an historically significant event."

Gleeson submits that an appropriate penalty is 8-12 weeks.

Gleeson: "This is classified as the most serious charge under the guidelines..."

Yeah. Nah

Grace says a penalty of 8-12 weeks is "manifestly excessive". He argues that the starting position for the sanction is 3 matches. He says he will not suggest a definitive penalty for the Tribunal, but says a penalty should be at the lower end rather than the "demonstratively higher figure" of 8-12 weeks.

Not sure that defence is the line to have taken. Didn't mean to get him in the jaw...fine. Feels sick and remorseful...sure. Even claim it was a brain fade. But then acknowledge it was a full weighted punch. Don't blame Brayshaw for ducking...what? A couple of inches? Don't blame the tagging attention. Don't cite your school football history. Just throw yourself on the mercy of the tribunal and say you'll never do anything like this again.

And Gleeson noted it:
"Gleeson says Gaff's evidence that he wasn't frustrated is "troubling".
He says: "The alternative isn't very colouring. If it was a clear-headed, unfrustrated Andrew Gaff who threw this strike, it is a strike worthy of even more condemnation."
